*NOTE: I am going to be starting this story from the second season, as I usually get a little bored talking about the first one because of using a basic squad.*

Everton Season Round-Up

Evertonians around the world were shocked during the build up to this past season when long serving manager David Moyes left the club by mutual consent for reasons that are still undisclosed. Luckily, unlike the dramatic departure of Martin O’Neill which left Aston Villa without a manager for their first couple matches, the Toffee board were quick to appoint a successor in the form of former Blues striker Duncan Ferguson.

Duncan-Ferguson.jpg

Ferguson had been in the backroom staff at Preston North End when Chairman Bill Kenwright approached him about taking over at Goodison Park. Much to the delight of the board and some loyal Everton fans, “Big Dunc” accepted the role a few weeks before the season began.

In terms of transfers, the former striker was quick to announce the departure of winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov who moved on to Fenerbache for a fee of £4m. Using the budget that was given to him, Ferguson secured the abilities of Wolves winger and England international Matt Jarvis for £8.5m, and also Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam for a fee of £7m. Glasgow Rangers winger John Fleck also came to Goodison in a season long loan move.

The Toffees were sitting in fifth position when the winter transfer window opened up, and Ferguson was once again active as he brought in French striker Nolan Roux in a deal which will see Everton pay Stade Brestois £10m over the next four years. Nonetheless, Louis Saha finished as the club’s top goalscorer with 16 to his name.

The fans were sure to have been delighted when Everton finished in 4th place in the Premiership thanks to a final day thrashing of Fulham at Goodison where they came out 5 – 0 winners, taking them above Manchester City and Manchester United on goal difference. Everton also won the League Cup with Ferguson when they beat Bolton 5 – 2 at Wembley.

While “Big Dunc” received most of the praise for guiding the club to the Champions League spot, fans and pundits alike were quick to pounce on the praise of defender Phil Jagielka, who finished the season with a 7.30 rating through 45 games in all competitions. These stats were compiled by EA Sports as part of their ongoing partnership with the Barclays Premiership.

Everton Swept Aside
everton-lose-at-arsenal-392535283.jpg

Arsenal began their defence of the Premiership title with a demolition of Everton on the opening day of the 2011/12 season resulting in a 4 – 0 win for the home side.

The Gunners took control of the match early on as Samir Nasri blasted the ball past Tim Howard to open up the scoring. Two minutes into first half stoppage time, Arsenal captain Cesc Frabregas slotted home to make it 2 – 0 going into the second half.

Everton defender Leighton Baines found himself walking down the tunnel after an hour at the Emirates for being sent off following a reckless tackle on Marouane Chamakh. Blues boss Duncan Ferguson looked on helpless from the dugout as Theo Walcott got the better of returning defender Joseph Yobo to put the game beyond doubt before adding a second within ten minutes, leaving the scores at 4 – 0 to Arsenal.

Speaking after the match, Arsene Wenger spoke of his respect for Ferguson, saying “it is always a magnificent occasion to face his Everton side, as we learnt from tough games last season.

“We played well, but at times the attack of Everton looked threatening. Ferguson definitely knows how to handle his players and keep his squad happy. I do not think that this defeat will have done much to his team’s overall morale going into the next game.”

Duncan Ferguson was unavailable for a post-match interview and sent assistant manager Dave Watson to speak to media, who commented that Everton were very poor today and cannot afford to give away games so easily.

Rodwell Error Costs Everton

The Toffees put aside their Premiership focus in order to be prepared for their first Champions League match since the 2005/06 season, but will be kicking themselves for not coming out winners against a battling Toulouse.

Early on, Everton had many chances to score through the likes of John Fleck and Louis Saha, but neither could find the net. Shortly before halftime, Louis Saha went down after a challenge from a Toulouse defender and had to go off.

In the second half, the Blues were once again on the front foot, but still had no look finding the target. After an hour of play, Jack Rodwell brought down Toulouse attacker Peron in the box. Peron stepped up to the spot and fired the away side ahead with a valuable away goal to take back home.

Once again, Duncan Ferguson was not present at the press conference, so Dave Watson filled in for the missing manager. When asked about his thoughts on the match, he said that no one could fault the effort from the home side, but they are disappointed to not find a goal.

“We were good out there tonight, but it just was not our time to score,” said Watson. “The players know what is expected of them for every game, and when you have games like tonight where no one can score, well there’s no one to blame but ourselves.

“As for Saha, the medical staff took a look at him and we can confirm that he has broken ribs, so a return probably will not be likely for at least three or four weeks.”

Jagielka Speaks Out

_45407448_jag512.jpg

Everton and England defender Phil Jagielka has spoken out this week on a couple topics that he was willing to address about Everton.

Firstly, he commented on the rumours linking him with Aston Villa, saying that the rumours are “absolute rubbish.”

“I really do not know where they’ve come from,” Jagielka said. “There’s no way I would leave the club, especially for a team that is trying to rival Everton for league positions. I am happy here and am pleased to be working with Ferguson. He’s a great manager and guided us to the Champions League – I’m not giving that up.

“As for our performances at the start of this season, they have not been what we have hoped for. The Arsenal result was embarrassing and the fans especially did not deserve to see something like that. The Toulouse game was better, but we have to find goals in the coming weeks. We have to be focused on the games that are coming and work towards even a better performance than last season.”

552045_33_preview.jpg

Jagielka also added that the Bolton match will be make or break for them as he is looking at it as a starting point for their season. Everton also have the second leg of their Champions League Qualifier coming up next week when they travel to Toulouse being 1 – 0 down on aggregate.

Roux Kicks Off Season

Everton played to host to Bolton this past weekend in what defender Phil Jagielka described as a “make or break” game for the Toffees.

The first half was nothing special for either side, with shots flying into the stands from all angles. Charlie Adam went down after a tackle by Bolton captain Kevin Davies, forcing him off the field to be replaced by former Leicester man Andy King.

Nolan-Roux_2487874.jpg

French striker Nolan Roux was brought down in the penalty area by Gary Cahill, which allowed Phil Jagielka to step up and put Everton ahead after 70 minutes. A mere six minutes later, Roux broke free of the defence and slotted the ball home giving his team a comfortable 2 – 0 advantage. Adam Hammill then made it a nervy last few minutes with a screamer on 78 minutes, but Everton were able to hold on, giving them their first win of the season at 2 – 1.

Everton boss Duncan Ferguson was on hand to speak to the media following the win, commenting that it was a relief to see them bounce back from two defeats in a row.

“We were a lot better out there today,” Ferguson added. “We could’ve scored more, but either way, we got the win and I’m grateful for that. I was a little weary of Jagielka’s comments after the Toulouse match about our performances, but it seemed it could have been a boost to the lads.”

Everton now travel to France in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier against Toulouse, who lead on aggregate 1 – 0, with their goal being a valuable away one.

Adam to See Specialist

555816766-soccer-barclays-premier-league-everton-v-blackpool-goodison-park.jpg

Scottish playmaker Charlie Adam has been ruled out for upto three months following an injury picked up in Everton’s 2 – 1 home win against Bolton at the weekend.

The Toffees man went down hard after a ruthless challenge by Bolton captain Kevin Davies, who has since apologised for the tackle and said that he never intended to do such damage. Adam will not be treated by the Everton medical staff but will instead be sent to a specialist in Portugal until his injury is healed.

The absence of Adam could prove to be a costly blow to Everton, as they had Adam as a replacement for the recently departed Mikel Arteta. With key matches coming up for the Blues, including a crucial Champions League tie against Toulouse and the Merseyside Derby, Duncan Ferguson will now have to pick out a man to boss the midfield in Adam’s absence.

Everton Progress at Toulouse Expense

A fired up Everton side came out clear winners this Wednesday night as they travelled to Toulouse in what would be a crucial second leg of their Champions League qualifying round.

John Fleck looked to have made things harder for the away side after he was sent off just three minutes into the match. Nonetheless, Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo pulled Everton back level on aggregate with a well timed header off a corner. Former Fulham man Clint Dempsey put Everton ahead 2 – 0 on the night with a curling effort from 20 yards out.

clintistheman.jpg

More corners came into the Toulouse box and Phil Jagielka capitalized on another one to put the game and the tie beyond doubt leaving it at 3 – 0 on the night, 3 – 1 on aggregate.

Everton manager Duncan Ferguson commented after the game that he was delighted with his side’s mentality in the match as it was a must win.

“Jarvis was incredible today,” Dunc stated. “Coming off the bench with a performance like that was a delight to see. You might say I should be praising Yobo or Dempsey or Jagielka, but Jarvis was the hero today. Overall explosive runs down the left and then two pinpoint corners really helped us tonight.”

Everton now progress to the Champions League Group Stages, with the draw being held tomorrow.

Champions League Group Draw Roundup

champions-league.jpg

Four English teams were involved in the Champions League Group Draw this past Thursday night, with reigning Premiership champions Arsenal, former Premiership winners Chelsea and former Champions League winners Liverpool, as well as pessimistic Everton all involved in the night’s draw.

Everton were the first English team to be drawn, being placed in Group C along with finalists Bayern Munich, Zenit, and Steaua. Arsenal were handed Juventus, Celtic and Borussia Dortmund in Group D. Liverpool, who won the competition in 2005, were drawn into Group F along with Atletico Madrid, AZ Alkmaar, and Serbian side Rad Beograd.

Chelsea fans will be drooling at the knowledge that their side will face Real Madrid after being put into Group G. Now Galactico boss Jose Mourinho was never able to win the competition with Chelsea, but dominated the domestic cups with two Premiership titles to his name. The other teams to be drawn in the group were Braga and APOEL.

Jagielka Sinks Kop

Jagielka-goal.jpg

Everton fans will undoubtedly be proud of their team after three successive wins in all competition, especially since the third of those wins came at Anfield in the Merseyside Derby.

With the match wearing on, seeing no goals but a classy performance in goal by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, it was beginning to look like it could end in a draw. This was until Man of the Match winner Phil Jagielka climbed above Kop captain Steven Gerrard to nod in John Fleck’s corner to make it 1 – 0. Numerous attacks were stopped dead at the feet of Jagielka as he personally made sure it would end as a Blue day.

Everton manager Duncan Ferguson said that it was “an honour to see his side put in a defensive performance such as that one."

“I’m delighted for the fans, and Jagielka has really picked up where he left off last season,” Ferguson commented. “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance from them. It was great to get wins at Anfield when I was playing, and it feels just as good as a manager.”

With the win, Everton sit in 6th place with six points from their opening three matches. Liverpool are 12th with just three points from their first three games, resulting in one win and two losses.

Month at a Glance

fixtures.jpg

With some impressive performances against the likes of Toulouse and Liverpool, Everton sit in 6th position at the close of August.

Phil Jagielka remarkably leads the club’s scoring charts with 3 goals in five matches. Matt Jarvis has provided two goals to top the assists going into September. In terms of fixtures in the next month, the Toffees play host to the likes of Manchester City, Bolton and Sheffield United, while facing an away trip to West Ham.

In the Champions League, Everton travel to Steaua then face Bayern Munich at home.

Late Tevez Denies Blues

Carlos-Tevez-celebrates1-400x300.jpg

Carlos Tevez will be credited with securing a tough point for his team when Manchester City travelled to Goodison Park on the weekend to take on an in-form Everton side.

Going into the game unbeaten in four, Duncan Ferguson’s side had a bit of confidence about them. Their breakthrough came in the 25th minute when French striker Nolan Roux sprung the offside trap and finished easily past Joe Hart.

In the second half, Everton continued their good performance but will feel let down when David Silva’s through ball found a waiting Carlos Tevez who blasted the ball into the back of the net in the 74th minute. Neither team were able to find another goal after that point, leaving the match at 1 – 1.

Duncan Ferguson hailed his side’s efforts after the match, concluding that the goal was undeserved and they cannot bring themselves down too much as a result.

“We played really well against them today,” Ferguson said. “Unfortunately, it just was not meant to happen the way we wanted it to. Either way, we have Champions League in midweek, so the focus has to switch and we have to keep this good form.”

Group Stages off to a Flyer

0,,12306~9290861,00.jpg

Focus from the Premiership switched to the Champions League on Tuesday night as Everton travelled to Steaua in what would be their first group stage tie.

With Everton bossing the match in the first half, they will feel unlucky not to have found the net in the first 45, but the breakthrough eventually came through Australian international Tim Cahill. Andy King’s neat pass out wide to Seamus Coleman allowed him to pace down the wing and whip the ball in to find Cahill’s head and send the ball flying into the back of the net.

With the win, Everton sit top of their group following Zenit’s 1 – 1 draw with Bayern Munich. Unfortunately for the Toffees, they play host to Bayern in two weeks, but will be hoping to upset the odds as they have done in the past.

Cahill Hails Ferguson Work

From one Toffee legend to another, Tim Cahill has this week spoken out on his manager’s good work during his time at Goodison Park.

Speaking to Everton TV, Cahill stated that Ferguson “works well with players in all parts of the team, senior, reserves and youth.

“It is a pleasure to work with him. A lot of people were sceptical when he first came but he got us to the Champions League and that is outstanding for us. We all work hard, and he does acknowledge the work that everyone puts in.”

image-3-for-ex-everton-fc-star-duncan-ferguson-attends-hall-of-fame-event-gallery-64764993.jpg

Cahill went on to say that within a few years, Everton could quite rightly be challenging in the top four on a regular basis, despite finishing in fourth last season.

“A lot of the pundits have tipped us to slip out of the Champions League in the group stages this season, but if we keep up the form we’ve found since the Bolton match, we can surprise them all and go through to the knockouts.”

With their Champions League campaign off to a good start following a win at Steaua, Cahill conceded that the team need to focus on their stuttering Premiership campaign more than other competitions.

Late Fight Back Not Enough

West Ham kept up their early season form this last weekend as they hosted a good looking Everton side in the fifth weekend of Premiership action.

New signing Felipe Baloy got the home side off to a flyer when he climbed above Leighton Baines to nod the ball past a stranded Tim Howard. A mere ten minutes later and the Hammers were at it again as Mark Noble took a chance with a shot from distance that flew past Howard’s gloves and into the back of the net to make it 2 – 0 at halftime.

Mark-Noble-004.jpg

As the second half wore on, Leighton Baines was called for a foul in the area and received his second booking of the day, resulting in his second red card of the season. Mark Noble stepped up to the spot and fired West Ham into a 3 – 0 lead to continue their push up the table. Tim Cahill gave Everton a glimmer of hope with a neat header following a John Fleck cross with 13 minutes left to play. Andy King then scored his first goal for the club after 87 minutes with an acrobatic overhead kick, but their efforts could not muster an equalizer as the match finished at 3 – 2 to the Hammers.

Dave Watson spoke to BBC Sport after the match, conceding that the Blues were “effortless” and lacked any sense of direction.

“If this is how we respond when we win the Champions League then it has to improve,” Watson stated. “Sure, West Ham are enjoying a good run of form early this season, but there were no excuses for that.

“Baines’ fouling today was uncalled for, and we will be speaking to him about that. On the other hand we are definitely delighted for Andy [King], scoring your first goal is always a special occasion.”

Bolton Claim Revenge in League Cup

Kevin-Davies.jpg

In a repeat of the League Cup final of last season, Bolton travelled to Goodison Park to take on their victors of last season Everton.

The first half saw good play from both teams, and Bolton’s Michael Silberbauer opened up the scoring with a header following Lee Chung Yong’s corner. Five minutes from halftime, Jermaine Beckford scored his first goal of the season with a curling finish from the edge of the area to level it.

The second half saw next to no action on goal as the match went into extra time. With a number of chances from both teams, there were still no goals. Despite this, Marouane Fellaini did nothing to help his side’s efforts when he received his second yellow of the night and was off down the tunnel.

As the match went to penalties, Phil Jagielka was the first man to miss from the spot, giving Bolton a good chance of going through. Tim Howard managed to save Johan Elmander’s penalty, only to see captain Phil Neville’s penalty rebound off the post, giving Bolton a priceless victory.

Morgan Blunder Hands Everton Victory

Phil-Neville-left-and-Tim-007.jpg

Newly promoted Sheffield United were the visitors at Goodison Park as Everton looked to bounce back from their midweek penalty loss to Bolton.

In what was a frustrating match for Everton, they managed to find the net just once through a mistake by Sheffield defender Chris Morgan. John Fleck’s corner was hit towards the far post as Man of the Match winner Phil Jagielka nodded it back towards the six yard box, only for Morgan to miss-hit the ball and watch it roll past the keeper.

Duncan Ferguson said after the match that it was disappointing to see the finishing not come to anything, but was thankful for Jagielka’s efforts on the goal.

“Obviously, we should have won by a lot more than an own goal, but at least we get the points. We have Bayern coming up so as long as the players are looking good before that
game then what more can I ask for?”

Bayern Leave it Late

As Everton hosted Bayern Munich in their Champions League group tie in this Wednesday night, many expected it to be a simple run out for the German giants.

Everton defended brilliantly in the first half, stopping a number of moves from passing by them. Phil Jagielka, however, gave his side a bit of trouble when he was sent off after 20 minutes for a foul which the referee deemed two footed and studs up.

Arjen-Robben-Bayern-Munich-Champions-League-Q_2440235.jpg

In the second half, Mario Gomez managed to break through the defence and scored to put Bayern up 1 – 0. Returning striker Louis Saha was substituted for Nolan Roux with half an hour left, and Roux managed to equalize thanks to his pace as he got the better of Demichelles, making it 1 – 1 with ten minutes to play. Former Chelsea man Arjen Robben then put the game back into the hands of the Germans with a screamer from some 25 yards out, leaving the scores at 2 – 1 to Bayern.

September was somewhat of a mixed month for Everton as they bounced from result to result. With good performances against Manchester City and Steaua, they were somewhat let down by losing to West Ham and Bayern Munich, while also being knocked out of the League Cup by Bolton on penalties.

Everton 2 – 0 Liverpool

Everton managed to bounce back this past weekend when they hosted Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby return match at Goodison Park.

The first half was back and forth with both teams’ defence doing their part. It took until the hour mark when the deadlock was broken through Everton winger John Fleck as he went on a blistering run before cutting inside and slotting the ball past Pepe Reina. Everton went on to dominate the game, accumulating over 65% possession in the final half hour.

Jamie Carragher brought down Nolan Roux in the area with 10 minutes left, allowing Scottish international Charlie Adam to step up and seal the win from the spot. With the win, Everton move into the top ten for only the second time this season, while Liverpool move down to 4th place with Tottenham climbing above them.

Newcastle will be pleased that they have advanced into the fourth round of the F.A. Cup as they knocked out a season-long inconsistent Everton side.

Hatem Ben Arfa once again proved to be Everton’s bogey man as he scored a screamer from 25 yards out after 50 minutes of play. The away side could not muster a comeback in the remaining time and will go back to Merseyside disappointed to be dumped out in the third round.

Dave Watson was present at the post-match press conference where he said he was sorry to the supporters that came to Tyneside and vowed that the players will make it up to them in the league.

Everton striker Jermaine Beckford has completed a £1.9m transfer to French club RC Lens this week. The Grenadian international had endured a stuttering season, with a return of just two goals in 21 appearances. Young striker Hallam Hope also left the club following a move to Blackpool for a fee of £375k. Irish defender Shane Duffy has moved to Peterborough on loan for the rest of the season.

With the outgoing transfers, the Toffees also completed a few incoming ones as well. Glasgow Celtic defender Mark Wilson came to Goodison Park for a fee of £325k as he was due to be out of contract with the club in the summer. 16 year old striker Stuart Johnson came to the club from Crystal Palace in a £1.1m move. Crewe Alexandria’s 15 year old striker James Clark also joined for £200k.

Coming off of an F.A. Cup third round knockout at the hands of Newcastle, the odds were stacked against Everton as they travelled to the City of Manchester Stadium to take on 2nd place Manchester City.

Carlos Tevez got the home side off to a flyer as he latched onto David Silva’s through ball and scored past Toffees keeper Tim Howard. French striker Nolan Roux made things even harder for Everton on 20 minutes when he was sent off for a vicious foul on Vincent Kompany. Five minutes before halftime, Tevez added his second goal of the day to make it 2 – 0 going into the second half.

In a match that City dominated in the possession and shot stats, hat-trick hero Carlos Tevez completed the scoring to end it at 3 – 0, sending City into first place in the Premiership.

Over an hour had been played in the match before either side were able to bag a goal when Everton’s on-loan striker Chris Wood got on the end of John Fleck’s left wing cross to give his loan club a valuable three points that leaves them two points behind Blackburn.

Duncan Ferguson spoke to the media after the match and said he was delighted with Wood’s efforts today and was pleased to just bag a second win in succession.

“We haven’t been that good this season,” Ferguson said. “I am just pleased to give the fans something to hope for with us moving closer to the European spots. I’m hoping that we can continue this little spell for a while and really make a push for those spots.”

Everton were able to continue their recent good form with a third consecutive win when they faced Sheffield United on the weekend.

In the second half, Everton were bossing the game but could not find another goal until the 88th minute when Scottish winger John Fleck made a classic run through the heart of the United defence before hammering the ball into the back of the net with the score at 3 – 0 to Everton.

Jagielka Issues Rally Call
Phil-Jagielka-001.jpg

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has urged his teammates to build on their recent new found form as they look to push into the European spots of the Premiership.

“We’re moving closer to them now,” Jagielka said. “As long as we keep our focus in the next few games we can really break into the top six at least.

“We’ve had good performances against West Ham, Blackburn and Sheffield. I know we can keep it up, and now we have Chelsea away at the weekend. Our form hasn’t been as good as people would have expected from us this season, especially after last season’s finish. I think everyone at the club realizes exactly what is needed to push up the table and we’re all working hard towards that.”

Everton currently lie in 7th place with Manchester United sitting in 5th, just six points ahead.

Late Strike Dents Chelsea Title Hopes

Chelsea 1 – 2 Everton

Chelsea’s hopes of claiming the Premiership crown have stuttered as they succumbed to a highly competitive Everton side at Stamford Bridge this past weekend.

Spanish striker Fernando Torres put the home side in front on 19 minutes with a curling effort from just outside the box. Everton defender Tony Hibbert was stretchered off the field after 23 minutes following a crunching tackle by Brazilian midfielder Ramires. The away side shot right back into the match through Toffee legend Tim Cahill in the 35th minute who got his head on the end of returning winger Matt Jarvis’ drilled cross.

As Chelsea relentlessly attacked in the second half, it was Everton who had the last laugh when John Fleck’s corner was met by the head of England centre-back Phil Jagielka in the 92nd minute to send Everton home with a valuable three points.

Phil Jagielka spoke to BBC Sport after the match in a buoyant mood, stating his delight to have grabbed the winner so late in the game.

“It’s a great feeling to score like that,” Jagielka said. “We defended really well out there and John’s corner was pin-point at the far post.

“I said in midweek that we needed to keep up this form and we responded brilliantly today.”

Duncan Ferguson also spoke to the press following the win and commented on Tony Hibbert’s injury that forced him to be stretchered off the pitch.

“Early scans show that he actually broke his ankle in the challenge,” Ferguson told the press. “Naturally, that pretty much rules him out until the end of the season. It’s unlucky for him and a blow for us as he had been playing brilliantly the last few weeks.”

With the win, Everton remain in 7th place, still just six points off of fifth placed Manchester United who also won today.

a good streak of wins, big improvement on some bad previous results

Hammill likes to score against you it seems

Shame about Hibbert, who will be his replacement?

Keep up the good work, nice story

Cheers mate! Yeah I ended up switching some tactics around after the City match and so far it's working.
I still have Neville there so maybe he could be first choice again. If not then there's always Mark Wilson or even Heitinga.
And yeah, ****** Hammill. They're always good goals too that's what's annoying haaha.

Sorry Everton Come to Defeat

Everton 0 – 1 Tottenham

Premier League

Top four-seeking Tottenham travelled to Goodison Park this weekend to take on Everton side who had just been knocked out of the Europa League in midweek.

The only goal of the match came in the second half when Aaron Lennon’s cross found the head of towering England international Peter Crouch to make it 1 – 0 to the away side. Everton were unable to muster a response with the half an hour that they had left, leaving them with a third straight defeat in all competitions.

Birmingham 2 – 1 Everton

Following three successive defeats in all competitions, including a recent 1 – 0 loss to Tottenham at home, Duncan Ferguson’s Everton side were sure to be weary ahead of their clash with Birmingham at St. Andrew’s.

French striker Nolan Roux got Everton off to a flyer when he slid the ball past Ben Foster in the opening minute of the match. The goal was the Frenchman’s first since the 3 – 3 draw at Manchester United in November. Birmingham midfielder Sebastian Larsson cancelled out Roux’s opener after 20 minutes with a curling effort from the edge of the box. A mere three minutes later and the match saw its final goal of the day as Dawid Janczyk got on the end of Craig Gardner’s through ball to hammer the ball past Tim Howard, giving the Blues a priceless 2 – 1 victory.

Ferguson Issues Warning to Players
efc__1235485515_Ferguson-pic400.jpg

Everton manager Duncan Ferguson has toughened his stance over his players by saying that with the form they have hit, no one is safe at the end of the season.
“It has been a let down of a season,” Ferguson stated. “We were meant to be challenging in the top four based on expectation this season, not on luck, as some described our position last season.

“No player in my squad is guaranteed to stay at the club so long as this inconsistency continues. There isn’t many matches left and we really have to work for a Europa League spot in the coming weeks. Newcastle was a let down, Tottenham was unlucky, and Birmingham was poor. Those are three matches which we should have at least been more competitive in.”

Ferguson went on to say that outbursts from the Everton camp were not necessary, citing Phil Jagielka’s previous comments in the season.

Evertons-Phil-Jagielka-ha-005.jpg

“The players do not need to focus on telling this team what they need to do. What they should be focusing on is showing their team-mates how to play the game.”

Following a string of poor results, Everton have slipped to 8th in the Premier League, nine points off of fifth placed Manchester United. The Toffees were also eliminated from the Europa League following a 1 – 0 agg loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the first knockout round of the competition.

Everton Edge Close Wolves Match
Encore-un-mois-pour-Roux_actus.jpg

Wolves 3 – 4 Everton
Premier League

The Toffees showed an improvement after their recent form to edge out opponents Wolves at Molineux in a 7 goal thriller at the weekend.

Everton went a man down after 6 minutes as England international Phil Jagielka was shown a questionable red card for a foul on Kevin Doyle. Nonetheless, it was the Toffees who opened up the scoring through a well struck effort from new England international Jack Rodwell after 20 minutes. The home side were able to bring it back level in the 41st minute when Phil Neville brought down Steven Fletcher in the area, to which the Scotsman buried his penalty into the top corner.

Straight after the restart, Nenad Tomovic fired Wolves in front when his cross freakishly found the net with a big spot of luck about it. Steven Fletcher then appeared to kill off the game in the 49th minute with a well timed finish past Tim Howard. The match was far from over, though, as Nolan Roux pulled one back on 54 minutes, then drew the Toffees level in the 58th thanks to a precise cross from former Wolves winger Matt Jarvis. Roux then scored the third goal of his hat-trick and the winner of the match in the 71st minute when he headed John Fleck’s cross past Wayne Hennessey, handing Everton a much needed three points.

Sensational Gueye Sinks United
efc__1283245770_gueye.jpg

Everton 4 – 1 Man. United
Premier League

Former Everton manager hailed one of his last signings as his “secret weapon,” in the form of young French winger/striker Magaye Gueye, though he never got to deploy this weapon.

As “Big Dunc” chose to opt with the 4-4-2 formation that was fielded last weekend, resulting in the Blues’ first win in five matches, the only change made was Untied loanee Chris Wood being taken out of the match due to contractual obligations, who was replaced by 21 year old Frenchman Magaye Gueye.

Everton’s Ferguson looked delighted when he saw Gueye open up the scoring after half an hour into his first competitive start for the Toffees this season. As Matt Jarvis swapped passes with Charlie Adam, Gueye made a well-thought out run that resulted in him tapping in Jarvis’ cross at the near post, giving the home side an easy goal advantage.

The lead was short lived however as Portuguese winger Nani pulled United level right on the 45th minute mark with a powerful effort from the edge of the area. As the sides went into halftime locked at 1 – 1, Everton’s supporters were surely sensing the familiar feeling of inconsistency that has plagued their side’s season thus far. How wrong they would have been, however.

GYI0061390931_crop_450x500.jpg

As Goodison Park looked on after the second half began, there was pandemonium as Magaye Gueye scored his second of the day, this time receiving a cross at the far post from Scottish winger John Fleck, which he slotted in easily to restore the lead. Just three minutes later and the Toffees supporters were again ecstatic as the hat-trick was completed when Gueye broke free of Nemanja Vidic and latched onto Charlie Adam’s through ball to put it in the back of the net, making it 3 – 1.

Time was wearing on, and it was clear the Everton supporters were celebrating from Gueye’s third goal of the day. The final goal of the match only topped off what was a superb performance from the home side as John Heitinga climbed above Rio Ferdinand to end the scoring at 4 – 1 to Everton.

efc.jpg

Is Gueye Everton’s Saviour?

Graeme Sharp updated his weekly blog this week, choosing to comment on Everton’s instant hero in their 4 – 1 win over Manchester United at the weekend:

A win over Manchester United was just what Everton needed to boost their push for the top five this season. It was brilliant to see the performance that went into that win, and obviously most of the praise went to Magaye Gueye.

efc__1278001416_mg.jpg

Myself included, there were a lot of Toffees fans that were calling for a change from Ferguson after seeing the 4-5-1 fail to stick with the players this season. As such, a 4-4-2 was a good change going into the Wolves match and it really did pay off. Again, supporters, myself included, were sceptical of Dunc’s choice to put Gueye into the starting line-up against United. A lot of people were raving about his form in the reserves and calling for at least a bench place or a start against a team near the bottom.

That being said, Magaye has definitely established himself with that hat-trick and is sure to be in the starting line-up for a while now because of that. It is unfortunate that Ferguson has only just given him his chance, as he would have been very useful earlier on in the season. And of course, there was the transfer request that he handed in that got rejected, so obviously Duncan had a plan for him, but could have handled the situation a bit better.

In no way am I playing down the win, as it was a very strong showing from the lads, but maybe Ferguson got things a bit wrong this season, and people cannot forget that he got us to the Champions League last season, in his first season of management.
To wrap things up, I hope that Gueye starts the next few matches for us, as he can definitely be a big star, as he proved on Saturday.

Everton Dominate Wigan

Wigan 0 – 3 Everton
Premier League

Following their impressive 4 – 1 win over Manchester United last time out, Everton were sure to be confident as they headed to the JJB Stadium to take on relegation threatened Wigan.

Continuing from his spectacular hat-trick last weekend, Frenchman Magaye Gueye scored the opener with a neat finish from Nolan Roux’s slick pass through the Wigan defence. Roux was the next to capitalize on poor defending as he made it 2 – 0 right on halftime from Matt Jarvis’ through ball.

Man of the Match winner Roux was again involved in the final goal of the match when he was fouled by Gary Caldwell inside the area, allowing Charlie Adam to smash the ball into the back of the net as Everton came out 3 – 0 winners. Another note is the stats of possession, which Everton dominated with 65% as compared to Wigan’s 35%.

Gueye on Form in Donny Thrashing
magaye-gueye_4254974.jpg

Doncaster 0 – 5 Everton

Premier League

Breakout Frenchman Magaye Gueye continued to shine this weekend as Everton travelled to Doncaster in what would be seen as a simple win for the Toffees.

Gueye opened the scoring after 13 minutes when he tapped in Seamus Coleman’s near post cross. The pacey forward doubled Everton’s lead on 18 minutes with a curling effort from just outside the box. Edging closer and closer to halftime, Young Player of the Year candidate John Fleck bagged himself a goal when he met Seamus Coleman’s cross at the far post, making it 3 – 0 at halftime.

Everton vice-captain Phil Jagielka was the first to score in the second half when he got his head on the end of John Fleck’s in-swinging corner just after the restart. There were no guesses for who completed the rout at Doncaster when Magaye Gueye scored his second hat-trick in three games for the Toffees when he hammered Nolan Roux’s simple pass into the back of the net.

As Everton ran out 5 – 0 winners at the weekend, they will be hoping on the results of fifth and sixth placed Tottenham and Manchester United as the race for European competition is still open.

Everton 4 – 1 Burnley
Premier League

Relegation candidates Burnley were up against the odds when they travelled to Merseyside to face an Everton team enjoying a four match winning streak in the hopes of securing European qualification.

In-form Frenchman Magaye Gueye broke the deadlock on 4 minutes as he dribbled through the heart of the Burnley defence and slid the ball into the back of the net. Scottish winger John Fleck scored Everton’s second goal on the 22 minute mark with a powerful effort from outside the box. Six minutes later, Everton were storming the game when Matt Jarvis saw his 25 yard screamer fly into the top corner, giving Everton a 3 – 0 lead at halftime.

Just after the whistle blew for the second half, a miscommunication between Everton defenders Phil Jagielka and Joseph Yobo allowed Charlie Austin to break free and give Burnley a glimmer of hope as he beat keeper Tim Howard. In the 55th minute, Danny Fox brought down Chris Wood in the box, allowing Charlie Adam to smash home the final goal of the day, leaving the scores at 4 – 1 to the home side.

Late Goal Denies Fulham Victory

Fulham 2 – 2 Everton
Premier League

Given Everton’s recent form, many expected the Blues to do a professional job at mid-table team Fulham, but not many saw how this one would end.

Magaye Gueye scored the opener shortly before halftime as he latched onto Charlie Adam’s through ball and slotted the ball coolly past Mark Schwarzer to make it 1 – 0 at halftime. Fulham looked like the better side as the two came out for the second half, and former Leeds man Johnny Howson levelled the match with a powerful effort from just inside the box which saw Tim Howard rooted to the spot as the ball flew past his head.

In the 73rd minute, giant centre-back Brede Hangeland climbed above Joseph Yobo to get his head onto Damien Duff’s corner and send the home side up 2 – 1. As time wore on, Everton fans were sure to be relieved when John Fleck equalized in the 88th minute as he fired the ball right into the top left-hand corner from 20 yards out, sending Everton home with a hard-fought point with the scores at 2 – 2.

Everton Succumb to Late Goal

Everton 1 – 1 Sunderland
Premier League

Everton remained unbeaten since the 4 – 3 win over Wolves in March as they welcomed a relegation threatened Sunderland side to Goodison Park.

The only goals in the match came in the second half with Jack Rodwell scoring the first. As Matt Jarvis’ corner was whipped in, Phil Jagielka’s far post header bounced off the post and more-or-less hit Rodwell and rolled in. Two minutes from time, Gonzalo Jara made a surging run off the ball from his own defence and met Jordan Henderson’s cross at the far post in Everton’s own area, levelling the match at 1 – 1.

Aston Villa 1 – 2 Everton

Everton had stumbled in the last couple weeks but nonetheless held 7th spot in the Premier League as they travelled to Villa Park in what would be the final match of the season for both teams.

Erik Pieters did himself no favours to the present Holland manager when he brought down Darren Bent in the area, to which the English striker stroked the ball nicely past Tim Howard to make it 1 – 0. In the 24th minute, Matt Jarvis picked out Phil Jagielka at the far post who headed the ball into the net to make it 1 – 1.

Deep into the second half, Jarvis went on a blistering run, which ended in the winger cutting inside from the right and driving the ball from outside the box right past Brad Friedel, giving Everton a priceless 2 – 1 win to end the season.

Everton Qualify for Europa
Europa-League-006.jpg

Given the results of domestic cup competitions this season, Everton have been able to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Manchester City won the first cup of the season as they beat Birmingham in the League Cup final. Despite this, City finished the season in 2nd place, enabling them to qualify for the Champions League, which opened up 6th place in the Premiership for European qualification.

Arsenal won the F.A. Cup as they beat Manchester United in the final. Like Manchester City, Arsenal qualified for the Champions League through retaining their Premier League title, which opened up 7th spot.

Everton will enter the Europa League in the third qualifying round.
