A mere 3 hours after announcing that Martin O’Neill would be leaving the club, Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner has called another press conference to confirm the new manager of the club.

With an expectant press waiting in the room; Mr. Lerner walked out and stated, “I’m sure you will all be surprised by whom I have chosen to lead the club for the foreseeable future, but I assure you the new man in charge knows what he’s doing and following talks with him, I am convinced he can lead this club to a bigger and better future.”
At this, all the press present immediately turned their thoughts to Steve McLaren, the formerly disgraced England manager famous for his ‘standing under the brolly’ picture at the failure to qualify for Euro 2008 following a dismal campaign.

However, the press were even more surprised when an unrecognised man walked into the room. He shook hands with Mr. Lerner, and was introduced to the press, “Ladies and gentlemen, I present you Andrew Reilly, the new manager of Aston Villa,”

This was greeted by gentle, if nervy, applause as Reilly took his seat.

A journalist from SkySports asked him, “Mr. Reilly; the call to hire you was obviously unexpected and no one could have predicted it. Can you tell us your plans for this club and how you intend to take them to the next level of competition – the Champion’s League?”

“Of course. I intend to use my transfer budget wisely to pick out a few players who I know can lead this club to a successful season. In my view, we have the potential to be looking at Champion’s League football, and that is where I intend to be within a few seasons. Naturally, there will be a period of gelling which we will have to get through, but I hope that the players understand I am not here as a joke. I am here to lead this club onto bigger and better things, as Mr. Lerner has said. I intend to improve the staff here, as my initial evaluation is that we need some better coaches in to take full advantage of the training facilities we have here to maximise the potential of our players. Once that has been taken care of, I will look to offload some of the higher-earners at the club who I do not feel will contribute to the tactical approach I intend to employ, and then use this extra revenue to build a stronger squad capable of challenging the top four.”

A journalist from FourFourTwo then asked, “What can we expect in the transfer market?”

“I honestly believe that this club is almost complete. We have a decent, young side which, if bolstered with some decent experience, I feel can definitely challenge the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for 4th spot in the League. I will probably be looking to use a 4-3-2-1 tactic which will maximise the midfield potential we have at the club, and look to Agbonlahor to lead the front line. In order to get the full use out of this tactic, I am likely to be in the market for an attacking midfielder or two, a striker and perhaps, if money allows, a better central defender.”

The journalist then asked, “Can you give us an idea of who you will be looking at?”

“I have always been an admirer of Juan Roman Riquelme, and will probably look to add him to the squad, but as for the striker and other attacking midfielder, I do not know at this moment in time."

Just a mere 3 days since new Aston Villa manager Andrew Reilly arrived at the club; his first act has been to sign a new kit sponsor and manufacturer.
Moving from Nike to Adidas, and grabbing banking giants Standard Chartered as a new kit sponsor, fans have been flooding the club’s message boards with how much they love the new kits. It has been suggested that Reilly perhaps has more connections in the football world than previously thought; and Villa fans now seem more comfortable with him in charge.

Another talking point is how quickly Reilly has fired the vast majority of the backroom staff, bringing in a whole host of his own preferred backroom team, including new Assistant Manager Ezio Sella.

At the Press conference following Riquelme's signing, Reilly had the following to say:

I will not be taking questions today, but I will say this. I am very, very proud to welcome Riquelme to the club. He is undoubtedly one of the best attacking midfielders in the world and I have been a long-time admirer of his. The deal to bring him here was cheap, yes. However, that does not mean that I will always look to buy cheap players - in my opinion this is an incredible bargain for the club and I'm certain that Juan Roman will more than live up to the £3M we have paid for him.

Aston Villa 0 – 0 Bolton
Following a promising pre season where we went on a roll with 6 wins on the trot, I had high hopes for this game. Unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise on the numerous chances we made (though it must be said that Jaaskelainen made some fantastic saves) and this was rather annoying, especially as we were at home. However, Bolton can be tricky opponents at all times and I was happy enough with a draw, for now.

Aston Villa Manager Andrew Reilly has once again delved into the transfer market and has brought 16 year old Marco Verratti from Pescara in a £650K deal.

2l7xj5.jpg

Many see the move as one for the future, but Reilly seemed to have other ideas.

FourFourTwo asked him, “Surely at just 16 you don’t plan to have Marco feature heavily this season; meaning this is more of a signing for the future?”

“I have my plans for Marco, but leaving him out isn’t one of them. He is a very talented youngster and I believe he can push for a place in the starting 11 once he begins to gain proper match fitness. Of course, the fact that he is so young bodes very well for the future; but this was not the main aim of the transaction. I planned to bring him in to provide cover for Steve Sidwell and that is what he will do. I firmly believe that come the end of the season Villa fans could be seeing a lot of this man.”

Verratti is Reilly’s second foray into the market, and rumours state that he isn’t finished, as he will be looking to take talented central defender Diego Lugano away from Fenerbahce; though the £7M price tag which has been slapped on him by the Turkish club could prove to be a stumbling block. Also, rumours of Reilly trying to bring the former Real Madrid and A.C. Milan hitman Ronaldo – who is currently at Corinthians – to England for the first time have intensified in the last few days, and sources suggest the Villa manager could be making a £1.3M move for him in the next week or so.

Thursday 20 AUG 09
Aston Villa 7 – 0 Glentoran
(EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP PHASE QUALIFYING)

(Agbonlahor[2], Sidwell, Riquelme, Young, Reo-Coker)
This was a much better performance, though it must be said that the opponents were awful. I’m happy that my tactic is starting to work and that the squad is starting to blend together quite nicely. Scoreline says the rest, really.

Thursday 27 AUG 09
Glentoran 0 – 2 Aston Villa
(EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP PHASE QUAL. LEG 2)

(Riquelme, Sidwell)
Away from home, so was expecting a smaller scoreline anyway, but 2-0 was a little disappointing, I’ll admit. However, I was pleased that my two attacking midfielders (despite playing Sidwell a little out of position) are getting into a nice form and seem to be scoring consistently, which is important and useful. It is going to be at this point where I will mention that Brad Friedel has been injured for about 3 weeks (he got injured before the Bolton match) and so I have been using Brad Guzan. To my surprise, he has turned in some decent performances and is a very good younger keeper.

I say 'mid-table' because at the start of a Villa game the lowest expectation is top half finish - so their in-game reputation isn't as high as it should be :/

Sunday 30 AUG 09
Aston Villa 0 – 0 Everton
This, for me, was a decent result. Everton had managed to get van der Vaart on loan AND had bought van Nistelrooy as well, so I was expecting a 2-0 maybe 2-1 defeat despite playing at home. Once again, Guzan had a very good game and did very well to keep yet another clean sheet (360 minutes w/o conceding). However, once again our inability to convert the numerous chances we make into goals against a decent defence and a half-decent goalkeeper is becoming slightly worrying and this could turn out to be a tough season for us.

TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY GOSSIP

It has been confirmed that Villa manager Andrew Reilly managed to sneak in a £1.3M deal for cultured Brazilian striker Ronaldo.
2psk3v9.jpg

Ronaldo had scored 11 goals in 16 appearances for Corinthians before signing for Villa

Reilly made a brief statement introducing the striker before the match against Wolves, “I am very proud to present the Villa fans with our latest signing; Ronaldo. I am sure that his experience and his ability to score goals will bode very well for us and I now believe we have a squad capable of the aims that have been set. Unfortunately he will not play for us today [against Wolves] as he is travelling to join up with the Brazilian national squad, but expect his debut to come in the near future.”

Wednesday 2 SEPT 09

Wolves 2 – 4 Aston Villa
(Agbonlahor, Milner, Riquelme[2])
This was an efficient performance from the team and I was very pleased with Riquelme grabbing 2 screamers as well as setting up Gabby’s goal. We were unfortunate to concede the goals we did, and I think that, despite Friedel back to fitness, I’ll probably go a few more games with Guzan in goal as it’s good experience for him and he has played well in the past.

Saturday 12 SEPT 09

Fulham 3 – 3 Aston Villa
(Milner, Verratti, Reo-Coker)
After today’s performance, I regret keeping Guzan in goal. He made some errors and didn’t play all that well and, in my opinion, cost us the win. We were leading 3-2 with 10 minutes to go and Guzan had a howler and Nevland scores his third – wasn’t great. On the other side, though, was pleased that rewarding Verratti with his first start (Riquelme got injured against Wolves and will be out for 2 weeks) was a good decision as he set up Milner’s goal and then scored one himself. Am definitely liking the fact I only spent £650K on him.

Thursday 17 SEPT 09

Vorskla 1 – 3 Aston Villa
(EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP D)
(Ronaldo[2], Roman Popov OG)
I was pleased with our performance in this match, and it was a shame that Ronny didn’t get his hat-trick due to a clumsy error from Popov in Vorskla’s defence. However, his debut was nonetheless a huge success and I am happy that playing him as a Trequartista is paying off – I have used him as different roles in previous games to no avail as he barely scored at all. However, this sentiment could be a early baked - after all it's just 1 game; and I guess I’ll have to see how it all pans out in the future.

heskey is beast a put in a good performance last night

Don't say that haha - he had a half decent game for England last night mate. Granted he missed a seriously good opportunity, but I'd actually say he was one of England's better players last night - held up the ball really well for a target man, set up Stevie's goal, too. If only Rooney could have played the whole match like he played the last 10 minutes we would have been alright.

Oh, and there's some obvious abuse that should go towards Rob Green, too. Saw this nifty picture:

Made me laugh ;)

Haha, yeah. Cheers, too :)

Sunday 20 SEPT 09
Aston Villa 2 – 2 Man City
(Verratti, Reo-Coker)
Golden chance for us to take the lead on 5 minutes, but Ronaldo hit both the initial shot and the rebound straight into Given, which was disappointing. However, two goals in fairly quick succession ensured that this didn’t bother me. Then, though, the douches that are Man City injured Richard Dunne which is quite serious (he should be out for around 7 weeks). Unfortunately, in his first game back in the first team, Friedel didn’t perform too well and conceded two cheap goals which I’m sure could cost us dear later in the season. However, they did dominate possession and I’m happy enough with a result that still leaves us unbeaten.

Wednesday 23 SEPT 09

Aston Villa 2 – 1 Portsmouth
(CARLING CUP)

(Verratti, Sidwell)
What with this just being a Carling Cup match and with a league match against Hull in another 3 days, I decided to rest a few key players. Verratti started and he managed to equalise well after Cuellar gave away a penalty – the second time he’s done so in 2 starts. All said and done though, a decent enough performance against a keeper who I regularly have problems scoring against on other games as well, so I’m pleased enough with 2 goals.

Saturday 26 SEPT 09
Hull 0 – 2 Aston Villa
(Riquelme, Reo-Coker)
Our away form seems good at the moment and I’m happy with it. Still rather disappointed that our forwards can’t score many and that we’re relying on midfielders to bag our goals for us, but I’m sure as Ronaldo blends into the squad he’ll score more. I will give a full 2-month round up and current league position, all the usual stuff, in the next post.

nice signings
nice lay out
will follow this mate ..... good work

I always see people overpaying for Verratti.C'mon guys you can get him from 200k!!!

I always see people overpaying for Verratti.C'mon guys you can get him from 200k!!!

It can depend on a lot of factors, he gets offered to be co-owned by different teams in different games, so yes, it's possible to get him for £200K, but the fee can vary depending on the other team who co-owns him.
