A FOOTBALLING DYNASTY

Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Nicknamed "The Red Devils", the club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

Manchester United have won a record 20 League Titles, a joint-record 12 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 21 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998–99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. José Mourinho is the club's current manager, having been appointed on 27 May 2016.

Manchester United was the second highest-earning football club in the world for 2013–14, with an annual revenue of €518 million, and the world's third most valuable football club in 2015, valued at $1.98 billion. As of June 2015, it is the world's most valuable football brand, estimated to be worth $1.2 billion. It is one of the most widely supported football teams in the world. After being floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was purchased by Malcolm Glazer in May 2005 in a deal valuing the club at almost £800 million, after which the company was taken private again. In August 2012, Manchester United made an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The club holds several rivalries, most notably with Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds United, and more recently with Arsenal.

THE SIR ALEX FERGUSON ERA

jAlex Ferguson and his assistant Archie Knox arrived from Aberdeen on the day of Atkinson's dismissal, and guided the club to an 11th-place finish in the league. Despite a second-place finish in 1987–88, the club was back in 11th place the following season. Reportedly on the verge of being dismissed, victory over Crystal Palacein the 1990 FA Cup Final replay (after a 3–3 draw) saved Ferguson's career. The following season, Manchester United claimed its first Cup Winners' Cup title and competed in the 1991 UEFA Super Cup, beating European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade 1–0 in the final at Old Trafford. A second consecutive League Cup final appearance followed in 1992, in which the team beat Nottingham Forest 1–0 at Wembley. In 1993, the club won its first league title since 1967, and a year later, for the first time since 1957, it won a second consecutive title – alongside the FA Cup – to complete the first "Double" in the club's history.

In the 1998–99 season, Manchester United became the first team to win the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League – "The Treble" – in the same season. Losing 1–0 going into injury time in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored late goals to claim a dramatic victory over Bayern Munich, in what is considered one of the greatest comebacks of all time. The club also won the Intercontinental Cup after beating Palmeiras 1–0 in Tokyo. Ferguson was subsequently knighted for his services to football.

Manchester United won the league again in the 1999–2000 and 2000–01 seasons. The team finished third in 2001–02, before regaining the title in 2002–03. They won the 2003–04 FA Cup, beating Millwall 3–0 in the final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. In the 2005–06 season, Manchester United failed to qualify for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over a decade, but recovered to secure a second-place league finish and victory over Wigan Athletic in the 2006 Football League Cup Final. The club regained the Premier League in the 2006–07 and 2007–08 seasons, and completed the European double by beating Chelsea 6–5 on penalties in the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Ryan Giggs made a record 759th appearance for the club in this game, overtaking previous record holder Bobby Charlton. In December 2008, the club won the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup and followed this with the 2008–09 Football League Cup, and its third successive Premier League title. That summer, Cristiano Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid for a world record £80 million.

In 2010, Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 2–1 at Wembley to retain the League Cup, its first successful defence of a knockout cup competition.
After finishing as runner-up to Chelsea in the 2009–10 season, United achieved a record 19th league title in 2010–11, securing the championship with a 1–1 away draw against Blackburn Rovers on 14 May 2011. This was extended to 20 league titles in 2012–13, securing the championship with a 3–0 home win against Aston Villa on 22 April 2013.

RECENT HISTORY - POST 2013

On 8 May 2013, Ferguson announced that he was to retire as manager at the end of the football season, but would remain at the club as a director and club ambassador. The club announced the next day that Everton manager David Moyes would replace him from 1 July, having signed a six-year contract.Ryan Giggs took over as interim player-manager 10 months later, on 22 April 2014, when Moyes was sacked after a poor season in which the club failed to defend their Premier League title and failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1995–96. They also failed to qualify for the Europa League, meaning that it was the first time Manchester United hadn't qualified for a European competition since 1990. On 19 May 2014, it was confirmed that Louis van Gaal would replace Moyes as Manchester United manager on a three-year deal, with Giggs as his assistant.Malcolm Glazer, the patriarch of the Glazer family that owns the club, died on 28 May 2014.

Although Van Gaal's first season saw United once again qualify for the Champions League through a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, his second season saw United go out of the same tournament in the group stage. United also fell behind in the title race for the third consecutive season, finishing in 5th place, in spite of several expensive signings during Van Gaal's tenure. However, that same season, Manchester United won the FA Cup for a 12th time, putting them on par with Arsenal in total FA Cup wins.[69]Despite this victory, Van Gaal was sacked as manager just two days later, with Tobey Mason appointed in his place on 27 May, signing a three-year contract.

THE NEW MAN IN CHARGE

Salford born Tobey Mason takes charge of Manchester United and is the latest manager to help steer the club back to the lofty heights of which it is used too. Mason enjoyed a successful playing career which started off at The Red Devils where he played for the Under 18's before becoming a full time squad player. Sir Alex Ferguson did however sell Mason to Everton where he played for a few more season before moving on to Watford where Mason ended his career at 27 due to a horrific knee cruciate ligament injury. Mason won one Premier League title at his time with Manchester United but unfortunately won nothing else in his career.

Mason played for the England national side twice but wasn't really deemed good enough to play internationally. When Mason retired he turned to punditry for a year where he was a recurring guest on ITV's The Premiership TV Show. Mason was keen to get his coaching badges and fully concentrated on this.

Mason was then bought back into the Manchester United fold where he learnt his trade coaching the clubs Under 18's side, going full circle in his career and starting back where it all began.

Tobey Mason has been touted as a young, hungry manager who has fantastic tactical knowledge and is a specialist in attacking training. After Louis Van Gaal was sacked at United it's believed that Ed Woodward and the Glaziers were keen to give the managers position to a staff member in house. Many pundits and fans thought Ryan Giggs was the shoe in but after his time as LVG's assistant the club became unsure over his ability to manage. Therefore the job was given to the up and comer.

Opinion is split on the appointment of Mason with many fans displeased with such a rookie being appointed to such an illustrious position at the club. Manchester United will be looking to see just how Mason does and will be hoping that he is the man to re-instate past glories to the club.

THE MANCHESTER UNITED FIRST TEAM

GOALKEEPERS

View attachment 123280

Manchester United have one of the best Goalkeepers in the world in the shape of David De Gea. The Spaniard endured a torrid start to his Manchester United career but Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal all kept faith in him and he has now become the goalkeeper he is today. Mason will no doubt use De Gea as his No:1 keeper but has good cover with Sergio Romero who has deputised on a number of occasions and is more than capable of putting in a fine display for The Red Devils.

DEFENDERS

View attachment 123277

If United were to have an achilles heel over the past few years then it would have to be the teams defence. Not since the days of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have the club looked so strong at the back. Both those players have now departed The Red Devils and it seems that a gap and a void in class left with them. Chris Smalling and either Daley Blind or Marcos Rojo were Louis Van Gaal's pick last year to play in the centre backs position but the club did leak goals. Phil Jones has recently had his fair share of injury problems and can't seem to get a run of games going before hobbling off with his next injury.

At left back United have Luke Shaw who will hopefully become a fantastic player but he too suffers from the odd injury throughout a season. Luckily United have Daley Blind or Marcos Rojo who can step in for Shaw if he is out of the side. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia are the two players who can compete against one another for the right backs position in United's defence, both equally adept at playing there.

MIDFIELDERS

View attachment 123274

Tobey Mason has some talent in the centre of midfield with the likes of Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney who has decided to re-invent himself in this position. Rooney has lost some sharpness when it comes to playing up front and is looking to shine in this new position. Paul Pogba joined from Juventus and was signed by the club before Mason took the reigns but the young manager will be delighted to have such an amazing talent in his ranks.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick are also available to play in the centre of the park and their experience will be invaluable to Manchester United and to Tobey Mason. Carrick who is in the twilight of his career will be looking for one more really successful season before probably retiring.

WINGERS

View attachment 123271

An abundance of talent for the wing positions at Manchester United with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan who joined from Dortmund before Mason arrived and Anthony Martial who had a fantastic debut season for the club last year. Juan Mata is also a sessational player and a real fan favourite at Old Trafford.

Memphis Depay who struggled at the tail end of last season to get in the squad will know he has a lot of work to do to impress Mason and the United coaches if he is to stake a first team place back at United. FA Cup final goalscorer Jesse Lingard will undoubtedly get his chances this season with his talent clearly seen last season.

STRIKERS

View attachment 122976

Two very contrasting players from where they are in terms of their career. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is at the latter stage of his career and posses years of experience and talent whilst while Marcus Rashford who does have the talent he lacks in experience. Rashford was welcome surprise last year under Louis Van Gaal scoring on his debut in the Premier League, Europa League and Manchester derby. The youngster has the world at his feet and has already come into the international fold for England.

Zlatan comes to the Premier League at the age of 34 and whilst this will be the toughest test of his career Zlatan still defies normal human boundaries and will be looking to make his Premier League career as successful as his times in other leagues across Europe. Tobey Mason has stated that he will look into the Transfer Window for another striker as with only Rashford, Ibrahimovic and at a stretch Rooney available it is a position the club could find themselves stretched in.

MANCHESTER UNITED PRE-SEASON 2016

View attachment 122981

Manchester United will head to China for their pre-season tour this year. The tour itinerary will include seven friendly matches against a mixture of China's football teams. The most well known being Guangzhou who have really made a statement of intent recently with the signings of Jackson Martinez (formally of Atletico Madrid) and Paulinho (formerly of Tottenham Hotspur).

Guangzhou will most likely provide Manchester United with their toughest test on this tour and it will be up to Tobey Mason to have his tactics right on the day. Still the Red Devil's fans will expect the club to get seven wins from these games.

The Manchester United Players Looked In Good Spirits As They Travel To China

The players seem ready for the tour and will all be looking to stake a place in Mason's first team. Some of the club youngsters will be involved and it is a fantastic moment for them to impress their manager. The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba will make their non-competitive club debuts.

It's believed that a potential new signing may well be joining the club in China as Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward was seen boarding a plane with an unidentified player. It seems that this player may well still be discussing contract negotiations as Manchester United have not released any immediate transfer news.

MASON MAKES FIRST TRANSFER SIGNING

View attachment 122974

Manchester United have signed Southampton's Dutch central defender Virgil Van Dijk for a fee of £44,500,000.
Subject to conditions, however, the transfer may rise to £51,000,000. Van Dijk who koined Southampton from Celtic for £12,000,000 in 2015, is said to be eager to travel to China to meet his new team mates and impress his new manager Tobey Mason.

The mystery of who was seen boarding that plane with Manchester United Executive Vice-Chairman has been solved.

Van Dijk joins the Red Devils at quite the cost but Mason seems undeterred to let this affect either the team or Van Dijk. The Dutchman was considered one of the best defenders in the league last season and he will look to continue that form for his new club.

Good luck with this, that's a huge fee to pay, personally think there is better out there for that money

Van Dijk is a great centre half but for don't know if he is worth £44,500,000, potentially £51,000,000. Here's hoping he slots in alongside Baily and shows his worth.

Don't think I'd have paid it but suppose it depends what type of centre half you're looking for.

Good luck

Great start to the story! Van Dijk may seem a huge fee but United payed £109m for Verrati in my save!! I am a huge fan of Van Dijk and I am sure he will be a great addition.

Cheers guys. Yea alot of money I know but hopefully he can help us.

MAN UTD 2016 PRE-SEASON REVIEW

Manchester enjoyed a successful Pre-Season tour of China where they played seven games and won six of them. They remained unbeaten throughout the tour (of which they would of been disappointed not to be) and looked promising throughout. The games were good preparation for what awaits Manchester United in the lying weeks ahead. Mason was pleased with his team but knows they will need to step their game up against tougher opposition when it presents itselft.

United only conceded one goal throughout the whole tour and will be pleased with such a feat. David De Gea worked well in goal and made some fantastic saves to keep the goals conceded stat to only the solitary goal. New signing Virgil Van Dijk looked impressive, especially when partnered at the back with fellow new signing Eric Bailly.

View attachment 122770

The Red Devils scored fifteen goals out in China, Zlatan Imbrahimovic scored two alongside Marcus Rashford who also netted two. standout players for this tour will most definitely have been Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Memphis Depay and Daley Blind. Players who looked lacklustre and not anywhere as near as sharp as they should be were, Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia and Chris Smalling. Mason will be watching like hawk now to see whether his players are ready for the upcoming matches...

First up is Wayne Rooney's testimonial against Everton, then a welcome trip to Wembley to face last season's Premier League champions Leicester in the Community Shield. After this the team will ironically then face Everton again in the Premier League curtain opener at Goodison Park.

INJURY UPDATE

Whilst the team were on their tour in China Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly all got injured. Luckily Bailly recovered from a slight knock but Smalling and Shaw will need to carry on rehabilitation when back in England.
