Newcastle boss looks to end 'tricky' spell

Alan Pardew has warned his Newcastle side to shape up or face a disappointing season.

United won just two of their six games during September and currently sit 14th in the Premier League.

The Magpies were also eliminated from the Capital One Cup by Wolves but on a brighter note they have taken four points from their first two Champions League games.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Pardew said: "We have had a tricky run this season. There have been a lot of tough games and we just haven't been able to reach the levels of last season.

"There has been an improvement from last month and we have been slightly unlucky to have not picked up another win or two in September."

Newcastle started the month well with an emphatic win over Tottenham and a hard-fought victory at Benfica but since then United have failed to win in four games.

Pardew added: "We played well at Old Trafford and the game only got away from us in the last ten minutes.

"At Wolves we underestimated them and our young side were rightly beaten but two draws against QPR and Shakhtar have been well deserved.

"We need to get some consistency or else this could be a very tough season."

Newcastle start to progress after three wins out of four

Alan Pardew believes his Newcastle side are moving in the right direction after just one defeat in October.

United defeated both Wigan and Norwich comfortably before edging out Victoria Plzen in the Champions League.

The month did end on a sour note as Aston Villa snatched a win at St James Park to limit the Tynesiders' league progress to 10th.

Speaking to the BBC Newcastle, Pardew said: "The Villa game aside, it has been a solid month for us.

"Some of our big players have stepped up recently especially the forward players.

"We look a big threat to teams now and we are moving in the right direction."

Papiss Cisse scored three goals in the month while Loic Remy added two more to his tally.

TOON INTO LAST 16

United progress to the knockout stage of the Champions League in another mixed month

Newcastle's Champions League campaign had lift-off as the side qualified for the next round of the competition with a game to spare.

Victory over Victoria Plzen left United on the cusp of qualification and despite a heavy defeat to Benfica at St James Park, Plzen's draw with Shakhtar had the Geordie nation celebrating.

The Tynesiders' league form is still stuttering; wins against Fulham, Bolton and Swansea were mixed with defeats against Everton, Man City and Arsenal.

The indifferent form has moved United up the league and into 8th but they are now seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after 15 games.

Papiss Cisse's goal crusade included two hat-tricks in the month as he moved back into contention to retain his golden boot.

Mate, I have got a lot of time for this thread. As someone stated before, it's great to see that it is realistic and you aren't going out and signing the obvious players.

TOON IN TAKEOVER TALKS

Mike Ashley is in talks to sell Newcastle United to local business man Tim Parrish.

Parrish claims he will wipe out the club's debt if his takeover is successful however until the issue is resolved United have enforced a transfer embargo.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has pledged to carry on as normal despite the embargo. Speaking to BBC Newcastle, Pardew said: "Of course it is difficult, especially with the January window looming large."

There has also been speculation that the new regime may look to bring in their own manager and staff despite Alan Pardew still having six and a half years on his contract.
