The history of Irish Football

The Republic of Ireland national football team represents the nation of Ireland in association football. It is run by the Football Association of Ireland and currently plays home fixtures at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, which opened in May 2010.
The team made its debut at the 1924 Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals. Between 1924 and 1936, the team competed as the Irish Free State and from then until 1950, it was referred to by the FAI as Éire or Ireland. In 1953, FIFA decreed that for competitive matches in tournaments that both Irish teams may enter, the FAI team would be officially called the Republic of Ireland while the IFA team was to be named Northern Ireland (The IFA continued to use the name "Ireland" until 1970 for non-FIFA competitions)
Under the guidance of Jack Charlton and his successor Mick McCarthy, the team enjoyed its most successful era, qualifying for Euro 1988, reaching the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup in their first ever appearance at the finals, and making the last 16 at both the 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
The side was the first team from outside the United Kingdom to defeatEngland on home soil, at a fixture played at Goodison Park, Liverpool, in 1949. The team also reached the quarter-finals of the 1964 European Nations' Cup.

Trapattoni calls it a day

Giovanni Trapattoni (born 17 March 1939), known as "Il Trap",[4] is an Italianfootball coach and former player, considered the most successful club coach in the history of Serie A.[5]
Trapattoni is currently the manager of the Republic of Ireland national team, also having coached the Italian national team and throughout Europe. He is also the only manager to have won all UEFA club competitions and the Intercontinental Cup. He achieved this with Juventus over his two spells with the club.
One of the most celebrated managers in football history, Trapattoni is one of only two coaches, alongside the Austrian Ernst Happel, to have won the league title (10) in four different countries (Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Austria). Alongside the German Udo Lattek, he is the only coach to have won all three major European club titles. Also, he is the only one to have won all UEFA club competitions and the World Club title, also having the record of UEFA Cup wins (three).

But today Giovanni told Sky sports news that he has had enough of management and would like to spend the rest of his life with his family, but he also said he would be more than happy to help Ireland out if they needed him

Today the Irish FA have shocked the world of football by bringing back former Newcastle and Luton manager Joe Kinnear. Kinnear left his post as manager of Newcastle because of health reasons, but it is today revealed that he will replace Trapattoni as the new Ireland manager.

Kinnear played as a defender, spending the majority of his career — ten seasons — with Tottenham Hotspur. With Tottenham he won the FA Cup, the Football League Cup twice, the FA Community Shield and the UEFA Cup.
Kinnear was born in Dublin, moving to Watford, England at the age of seven. He was capped 26 times for the Republic of Ireland national football team.

Kinnear first made an impression as a player with St Albans City. His talent as a defender was quickly recognised and in 1963 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur where he spent ten years, playing in the 1967 FA Cup final against Chelsea, a game Tottenham won 2-1. Kinnear made almost 200 league appearances for Tottenham, chipping in with two league goals. He won four major honours during his time at the club: the FA Cup in 1967; the UEFA Cup in 1972 and the Football League Cup on two occasions (in 1971 and 1973). In 1975, he moved to Brighton, where he made 16 appearances before retiring at the relatively young age of 30.

I am disappointed with the boys today, we should have won this match easily. It was abit of a pointless game i suppose but it was good to see young stokesy bang his first international goal, Well done to the lad.
