AN INTRODUCTION:

Now that I have your attention, I am not talking about the prolific, ****-star loving Brazilian striker. I am, in fact, talking about a sleepy town in the northern part of Bavaria called Bayreuth.
A town of just over 73.000 people it might be best known around the world as the birthplace of the famous composer Richard Wagner - hence the title.

Once in the past among the foremost sports cities in Germany, with a hockey team briefly playing in the First Division, national champions in Basketball and top teams in various other sports, most local clubs have since fallen into obscurity predominantly due to poor financial handling and insolvencies.

This goes specifically for a little team called SpVgg Bayreuth.
Once on the brink of breaking into the 1. Bundesliga, the team has steadily descended down the league pyramid and at current finds itself in the Oberliga Bayern.
The team has the most basic facilities and a youth academy, the biggest asset will undoubtedly be the Hans-Walter Wild stadium, which has a current capacity of 21.500.

The Oberliga is the fifth tier in German football, comprised of 12 parallel leagues gaining promotion to three regional leagues that gain promotion to the third league, from which point forward there is only one league up to the Bundesliga.
Unlike many other league systems, the lower leagues are very much "the winner takes all", with only one team in each division gaining promotion each season.

So much for the preface, now let the story begin....

Oberliga Bayern Season 2009/2010:

As you might have taken from the newspaper snippet, things are not looking rosy.
The squad is small, with only 7 players from last season's line-up and two of the oldest players of the league among them.
There's a few promising youngsters that I can use (and more than likely have to use), but it will certainly be an uphill struggle.

I have no assistant manager, no coaches, no scouts and I am working on no transfer budget with a wage budget of 1.7k, most of which is already taken up by deadwood players that I have to keep because I cannot afford to release them.

I already started to approach a few additions to my backroom and will hopefully be able to start scouting players in the near future. I asked my board to find a parent club, and I have successfully arranged a few high-profile friendly games to bring in much needed revenue.

My plan is to take the club to the next higher tier, turn professional and take it from there.
To do that I will most likely need to stretch (and overstretch) the wage budget and hope to avoid going into administration long enough to attract enough fans to balance the books.

The toughest challenge of my footballing career is just about to start.....

Authors Note:

I will try to stay in character as much as possible.
Whenever I say something outside of character it will be added in notes such as this one.
I am using a custom database I found on another forum that enables the lower leagues of German football down to tier 5.
It's not an exact representation of the league structure, but apparently as close as the editor allows. However, only the players that SI already added to the teams in the league are present, the rest is filled by random regens at the start of the game.
Currently, I am 10 games into my second season, so there will be quite a few updates on this story once I get home from work. I played ahead to see if I can even handle the pressures of lower leagues, and so far so good.
For now I will ask you, if you intend to follow this story, to just "like" it and not clutter the thread with replies wishing me luck or calling me crazy, at least until I updated the season a bit more. Thanks in advance.

Pre-Season 2009:

Ok, it is the beginning of June 2009.
I hired a young local boy, Marco Atkas, as my assistant manager.
He may not have the greatest footballing experience, but at least he knows the area and can help me to fill the ranks.

According to him, the best player on my squad is 39 year old Ingo Walther, and even he is far from a standard with which I can hope to make anything happen.
The first order of business is therefor to get the bets scout I can hire and find players to fill my squad.

Working day and night with my scout we managed to sign a few players for free that we all hope can keep our promotion hopes alive.

I am extremely happy with Lucas Winck, a German born Brazilian with impressive stats compared to many of my other players. He's very young, but during contract negotiations I was very impressed by his determination, and I believe he will contribute a lot to this team.
The other notable signing is Georg Geers, a 23 year old offspring of the Schalke youth squad.

My key signings:

Luckily I don't have to worry about work permits, the only limit being three non-EU players in my match day squad.

With the new signings, and the help of an old acquaintance Dan providing a good training schedule, the first batch of pre-season friendlies is just around the corner.
I managed to lure a few high profile clubs to play us in our very own Hans-Walter Wild stadium, a much needed cash influx that should ward off insolvency until next season.

As it stands, I am almost two thousand Euros above my wage budget but the combined income from the friendlies is estimated at around 120.000 Euros. It is a gamble, no doubt, as promotion is about the only way to stop the financial freefall.

We started off with local rivals, Bundesliga outfit Nurnberg and did rather well, all things considered.
The following week we hosted our first Bayreuther cup. Three big teams were present, and although we lost rather heavily I am pleased with the amount of supporters we were able to lure in our stadium.
All in all, the friendlies were a great way to gauge the level of my team, with one particular highlight being the heavy beating we delivered to Lubeck, a team hailed favorites to win the next higher division.
I am fairly confident of what lays ahead, although I am worried that my rather fast paced attacking tactic might be too much to handle for my squad.

With no mayor injuries to worry about, there's only a few short days until the new Bayrenliga season kicks off.

Bayernliga Season 2009:

As was already mentioned briefly in the newspaper article you may have read earlier, I was once playing for the German national team, with over forty appearances and handful of goals before a knee injry forced me into early retirement.
I am saying this so you can understand that I missed out on a few friendly games while I was receiving specialist treatment.
My assistant took charge of the matches and did a great job, but I did miss out on a few opportunities to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of my squad.

So it might come as little surprise that I am a little bit nervy going into our first fixture of the new campaign.

My squad so far:

Although this is my assistants best eleven, Philip Obhafuoso was signed a few days too late and is therefor not eligible to play until the next squad registration window in January.
His first choice replacement is Klaus Schaefer, who is together with Fevzi Kahraman the youngest player in my line-up. Both are only fifteen years of age, and look very promising.

The season begins...

AUGUST 2009

I don't think I ever stopped smiling during the entire match.
We dominated every aspect of the game, and I don't think there is any greater reward for manager than your new signing scoring a hat-trick on his debut.
Veteran Ingo Walther scored another magnificent hat-trick, although I had to take him out after only 35 minutes - he was spent.
I wish I could have seen my defenders do anything, but the ball hardly ever crossed the midway line.

Another great performance by my guys. They were really enjoying themselves, and it showed.
Lucas Winck was terrific, and he belied his estimated skill level. I guess a determined guy can really work wonders when given the opportunity.
The only thing that is really starting to worry me is the fitness level of my squad.
My ultra-wide attacking tactic can seriously tear up the opposition, but it comes at a price - namely, fatigue.
I got a few knocks during the game, and their stamina was in the cellar. I guess I need to press my luck and play a few second stringers next week, although at this point I have no idea about which team in the league is considered a strong opponent.

_________________________________________________________________________

A solid performance in this match. I dare say we deserved the win, although at times the match was very much up for the taking by either side, and I was bracing myself for our first defeat of the season. Klaus Schaefer became the youngest goal scorer in the club's history at age fifteen with the winning goal in the second half.
Although early on, Grossbardorf was also undefeated in the league, scoring eight and conceding only one, so to take the three points out of this one was really something.

_________________________________________________________________________

picture.php

Well, we had what I like to call a hat-trick of misery:
One questionable goal conceded, one red card and a nasty injury to one of our key players.
I wish I could say anything about it being close and up for grabs, but Ingolstadt II were absolutely relentless. I am proud of my defenders and especially my goalie for keeping it respectable in the end.
Two players missing for next match we certainly have our wok cut out for us to return to winning ways.

_________________________________________________________________________

picture.php

We're back!!! Going into the game as underdogs I am very satisfied with the result. We should have scored more, but I take a scrappy win any day.
I am at this point still experimenting with my tactic, trying to take the speed out to retain more stamina in my players while keeping the pressure up. However, we might struggle for a while as our very wide and long pitch is leaving many areas uncovered.

_________________________________________________________________________

On the whole, the first month was a huge success:
Twelve points in five matches, scoring sixteen and conceding two, my key players are performing well and the youngsters seem very much up to the task.

Now the pressure is mounting to keep the run going....

Despite picking up an injury and not playing all matches, Lucas Winck was certainly my player of the month, runner-up being the impressive defensive prowess of youngster Fevzi Kahraman

Unfortunately, I can't post the league table as I am working from an archived save.
I will have one table up at mid-season, and I keep regular screens for the current (second) season. Feel free to post me any comments now and tell me how I can improve the story as this is only my second attempt at making one.
Thanks for reading,

Thanks, mate.
As I am now in my second season I can safely say that the quality gap in this league is gigantic. There's teams at the bottom that are at a level that equals picking eleven random guys of the street and giving them a jersey whereas at the top there's teams that just dropped out of the professional side of the game or are the reserves of the top three tier league teams.

SEPTEMBER 2009

A break of almost two weeks was much welcomed by our team. Stamina was recovered, knocks healed off and I had more opportunities to learn about the team and their strengths and weaknesses - and more importantly, their names....

I took the ti
me to hire two more scouts and refine the match day tactics.
Unfortunately, the board informed me they were unable to find a parent club for us.
Well, better luck next time I guess....

picture.php

Lucas Winck is back, and he bagged the winner. This guy is amazing, but fragile like fine China.
On the whole, I'm glad we got the win, but I am starting to worry about our taking off chances. We dominated every aspect of the game, over 60% possession, limited them to only one shot on target, but were unable to cash in on all but one of our clear-cut chances.
At times it seems like my guys consider the best way to score is to hit the opposing keeper straight on until he has had enough and jumps out of the way of the ball.
Anyway, a win is a win.

We had a fairly even match on this gusty September afternoon. Great passing made this game exciting at times, but a huge number of fouls on both sides left those moments few and far in between. After Gradl scored the first goal for the wrong side, Unterhaching II simply put up the barricades. It took us many tries but eventually we scored the equalizer in a match that neither side deserved to win.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Considered a close affair by media and fans alike i turned out anything but that. Lucas Winck once again started the scoring before Schaefer put the game away with his two goals.
Again, a high possesion and pass completion rate had us dominate a game in which we didn't allow a single shot to trouble our goalkeeper.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

September was a relatively short month with only three games played.
So far, so good, although by now it has become apparent what a huge result our 2-1 victory over Grossbardorf was. Despite them being held to a draw in one of their last matches they have overtaken us in the league table on goal difference with some impressive results.
At this point in the season they look like the toughest contenders to our promotion bid.

Fantastic start, really like the layout. The stadium has a fantastic capacity for the level

Thanks mate.
The stadium is actually owned by the city (in real life) for all sorts of sports events. Traditionally it was always used for the most high-profile team in town. I have no idea what the status is these days as I moved away from there close to ten years ago. Anyway, the team in real life won promotion last year by league position but was denied the step up due to insufficient finances, so there is some talent there.
The database I am using has only a handful of real life players and is filled with tons of regens. I guess I got some luck with a few of them, but other teams not so much - Memmelsdorf for instance has a 17 year old as their oldest player.....
I wish I had more time to make an actual database with real players, but for the time being this will have to do.

OCTOBER 2009

The season is starting to take shape, and by now I have a fairly good idea of who can be relied upon to go out there on the pitch and perform.
It will not be an easy task, with Lucas Winck out injured yet again, but I have every bit of confidence that the backups are up to the task.
The media is starting to get on board and even the team reacts well to my proclaiming to the press that I am convinced that we are the team to win the league.

It certainly wasn't one for the purists....
Very few chances, poor passing on both sides and all in all not very enjoyable to watch.
I know I shouldn't be too hard on the guys, with so many second stringers playing, but I had honestly expected a bit more.
We got the three points, which is great, and for the first time ever there were actually a few of our fans that traveled to see us play away from home.
I'm glad we are gaining support, but I am growing more and more worried about the tactics I am employing. We are creating far fewer chances as earlier in the season, and if the first few games are any indication of what is to come, the league finish might very well come down to the goal difference between us and high-flying Grossbardorf.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Glad for the extended rest we came out flying in this one.
More chances, very nice passing and all in all a very enjoyable attacking display.
It gets to show that my guys can really play when they are fit and rested. We should have scored more, and the one goal Rosenheim put past us was a bit of a let-down, but I am glad to take the points out of a game we were predicted to draw at best.
Although by spot-kick, I am happy for Fevzi Kahraman to get his first ever league goal.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Back on a high with this game. Despite it raining in torrents a very respectable crowd came out to see us play today. I'm still confused why Schaefer didn't get the first goal after he hammered the ball of a defenders head into the corner, but he would later add an indisputable goal when he fooled defenders and goalkeeper alike with a floating cross that somehow found its way into the net.
Before that however, local youngster Fevzi Kahraman was once again successful when he connected with a booming header from a corner kick.
Still going strong, although Grossbardorf is piling up wins and increasing the goal difference even more.

This one REALLY hurt.
We didn't play well at all, a few brief glimpses of skill saw us score two goals, one from an admittedly questionable penalty decision, but on the whole, we didn't even deserve the draw.
It hurt because on pure player skill and quality we should have taken this by a big margin, and even more painful is that now for the first time we are second place in the league by goals and points.

October is now in the past, and there's some signs that the seams are tearing in the fabric that is my team. The morale started dropping, and although highly rated, Serge Kouadio is proving to be quite inconsistent and has some serious problems settling in.
The silver lining in all this is my new favorite Fevzi Kahraman who bagged three goals in four games, as a defender no less, and is showing immense improvements in training.

I have spent countless hours with my assistant manager and scouting team to find potential new signings that will help me strengthen the team come next transfer window.
I have a few targets in mind, but I will need to offload a few players to prevent the wage budget from completely spiraling out of control....

This is great so far, really interesting mate. Very good in the league so far, I assume Wurzberg must be very poor for you to be so dissapointed because the month on a whole was fantastic.

Wow, this match could have easily been a source of great income if only I had videotaped it and slapped the UFC logo on it....
I don't know how else to say this, but Aindling certainly came out to hurt us - physically.
It was one of the dirtiest games I have seen in quite a long time, but in the short stretches between free-kicks we managed to actually play some very eye-pleasing football.
Fevzi Kahraman continued his impressive form, and Lucas Winck showed us all just what he can do when he's not injured by bagging two magnificent goals.
On the one hand I wish we had scored more against only nine opponents, especially in light of the growing goal difference to the top spot, but on the other hand I am chuffed that we didn't pick up any more injuries, not for a want of trying on the other teams behalf.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

I am not sure if I should be worried about the rage virus going around or anything...three red cards against the other team in two games is quite a streak - I guess I will know more 28 days later.
As for the match, it was just as one-sided as the score suggests. Beautiful passing, loads of scoring chances, and an impressive display by the opposing keeper and two of my guys scoring their first goal rounded up an enjoyable match.
Lucas Winck is almost playing like he's getting paid for it and Serge Kouadio showed in the past few games that he's settling in better, culminating in his first goal just before the final whistle.

Victims of complacency, it's as simple as that. We went out and scored, then conceded, than pulled ahead again. It all seemed so easy until just before half-time when we got punished by sloppy defending.
We were heavy favorites to win, but I guess my anger at half-time only added to my squads nervousness. We looked quite toothless in attack and chaotic in the back and the hope to hold out for a draw was shattered by Keils magnificent long-range effort.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

November.....two out of three is not bad, but I am not sure how many games we can afford to loose at all to keep our promotion hopes alive..
Thankfully, Grossbardorf dropped one game as well so we remain within one game in the league table.
We are getting a lot of inconsistent performances these last few weeks, and if this run continues I will more likely be forced to buy the team real cleats to play in.
The tactics are still a grave concern of mine, the team seems to respond, but even at reduced tempo my players are tiring way too fast which lead to too many avoidable goals conceded.
I will probably use the mid-season break to arrange a few friendlies to try a new tactic.

Player of the month is certainly Lucas Winck again. I certainly hope he can remain healthy for a while longer now.

A boring match to say the least, against our only real rival team no less.
The first half ended before I even noticed and no one even deserved to score.
I am quite annoyed by the display - uninspired play by all key members and performances only demonstrating why they are on the bench by the second stringers.
Well, the pundits predicted we loose, so I guess we can take something out of it, but after the last game I was hoping to bounce back better than we did.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

This one was very tough, and close. We had picked up a number of knocks in the last match and the following week's training. I was left without some key players, playing an entire second string attack line-up. The opener was immediately canceled out at the other end, but the fresh legs of third choice striker Robert Riedel secured a vital win for us

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Back to back wins are a nice way to end a year.
Being against the team that let us record our highest win to data - 8:0 in the season opener - it was an unnecessary close affair. And surprise, surprise, Lucas Winck is injured again.
After scoring the opener our top-scorer hobbled off the pitch with a shin injury.
The needless penalty put our position in jeopardy until the team collectively seemed to remember they were clear-cut favorites in this match and dominated the last ten minutes of the game resulting in two more goals.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

End of December, end of 2009 and so far an overall positive run.
At this point we are still second place, but after Grossbardorf drew another game we are separated by goal difference alone.
The opening of the transfer window will see us signing a few new players for the squad, with some luck offloading some of our own to manage the wage budget.
Some friendlies should provide a small financial injection, and more importantly, the opportunity to try out a new tactic.

As a Christmas present I received an anonymous package with detailed tactical instructions for a rock-sold 4-4-2 formation, sent by someone calling himself JP Woody. Never heard of the guy, but it looks promising and more than likely more suited for the quality of my players as the ultra fast and wide attacking formation I played up until now.
I would assume that our gigantic pitch size will cause some problems early on, but at this point I am willing to try anything to retain some match fitness.

Highlights of the year were most definitely the performances of Lucas Winck (when available) and the impressive display of youngsters Schaefer and Kahraman.

In terms of records, the 8-0 season opener is up to this point the highest league win and Ingo Walther has become the oldest player on record in the Bayernliga at 40 years of age.
Despite his age he has played very well and has just now announced his retirement at the end of the season.

As promised, I am finally able to show of the league table up to, and including the last match.

as well as my squad up to this point

As you can see, Lucas Winck is wearing his preferred "I am injured" jersey....

I have enjoyed reading this so far. Keep up the good work.

great story mate, by far the best layout and enjoyable read there is, i never follow stories due to the fact they all the same and never have started my own one, not my style, but great stuff mate!

Thanks all for reading.
So far it's the most fun I had in a long time playing any team. Right now I'm still trying to catch up to my current game time which is just around the mid-point of the second season.

JANUARY 2010

At long last I am able to register Philip Obhafuoso for my squad. He is by far the biggest transfer this season.

I signed a few more decent players for low wages, mostly in the hope that I can sell them off in the beginning of the next season to make a few bucks and help me build up a small transfer budget. That is, if we gain promotion. If we fail, this fragile house of cards I built will crumble and fall and bury this club in debt.

January will be slow month with only three league games, but my assistant has scheduled two friendlies so we have a chance to watch our new signings, and more importantly, refine our new tactics.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

This was a good match to start the new year. As with the previous encounter we couldn't repeat the performance of our first meeting earlier in the season, but I am happy with the amount of chances we created.
The passing was a lot more precise, we lost fewer balls, and when we did we regained possession a lot faster and safer as anytime before in the season.
Philip Obhafuoso
was literally bossing the midfield and provided the assist to both the goal by Winck and Schaefer, earning him the well deserved Man of the Match accolade in his first appearance.

Grossbardorf on the other hand won their match 2-1 against Aindling.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

An unimportant friendly game. We played okay against a weak opponent, but I am very grateful for the added opportunity to fine-tune my tactics without the added pressure of the league. Robert Riedel deserved his two goals and the Man of the Match award after coming off the bench at half-time.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Quite possibly the biggest game of the season is about to start.
Grossbardorf, away from home, a match that could very well decide the outcome of the season.
They are piling up the goals like there is no tomorrow, and a defeat might be too much to overcome.....

So, without further ado....

picture.php

Alright, I admit it wasn't the game of the century that I was anticipating.
Don't get me wrong, it was a great game, but mostly from a defensive point of view.
There were few chances, some great battles in midfield and simply stellar defending on both sides, as evidenced with ratings of 7.5 or higher for every single defender on the pitch.
From a neutral stance neither side deserved to loose today, and we were leaving the stadium with a volatile mix of disappointment and relief.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

The second of our mid-season friendly games was one I skipped to watch.
I was still trying to get my heart-rate down to any acceptable level after last weeks fixture, so I was heaving a spa day instead.
My assistant tells me it was a rather good match, with our key players performing admirably and our reserves getting some much needed playing time.
It certainly shows however that we have a long road ahead of us if we get picked to play the youth squad of other teams....well, we showed those **** kids.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Almost two thousand fans showed up on this day to support us in our, sadly futile, attempt to get revenge on Ingolstadt II. Second stringer Klaszka got us on then road to victory, but a well timed counter attack in the second half exposed our narrow play on a wide pitch to hold us to a draw.

On the other side, Grossbardorf recorded a convincing 3-1 victory, going two points ahead of us in the table.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Well, January was a tough month despite only featuring three games. Although I wish we had won all of the games I am also relieved that we didn't succumb to two of the strongest teams in the league. We have to pick ourselves up now and hope for a bit of luck in the shape of another team getting one over Grossbardorf.

great read! you are off to a great start. i look forward to reading more. keep up the good work m8:)

FEBRUARY 2010

Another short, three game month lies ahead, and the pressure starts mounting.
Having only 34 games makes for a relatively short season, and every week the list of teams that could possibly help us out by nicking some points of the league leader grows shorter.
Having only one single promotion spot is sure to make the sprint to the finish line an exciting one...

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Once again a match dominated by a strong midfield. We are playing a lot better away from home since we switched tactics, and got a vital win against a team still going strong in third place. Azmaz capped an excellent move to score the only game of the match, a definite must-win after Grossbardorf had already recorded a solid 4-1 victory the previous day.

We are still two points down in the table, and the goal difference has grown to a massive eleven goals, with only twelve matches to go.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

The pressure really starts to get to my players, as we performed terribly in the first half. Only the defenders seemed to have tied their shoes properly and so we were only one goal down at half time.
I seem to have struck a nerve with them by questioning their pride, as the second half started with an entirely different team. Passes connected, the tackles were precise and we literally locked Unterhaching II in their third of the pitch for most of the second half.
We should have put a lot more goals away then just the two by Ali Abou-Saleh and Markus Goller - Unterhaching II's goalkeeper Mathias Luginger was having a terrible day, dropping balls and passing directly in the path of our attackers, until he was eventually substituted.

Another vital three points at a day when Grossbardorf came out victorious in their encounter with Memmelsdorf.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

For the first time in quite a long stretch of games I could field my entire first choice squad.
It was a vitally important match. We were heavy favorites to come out on top, but what was just as important as getting the points today was to close the gap in goal difference that still separated us from the top spot.
Markus Goller started the rout from the spot after a clear foul, and following goals by Ali Abou-Saleh and Winck, veteran Ingo Walther shot his way into the record books as the oldest Bayernliga goalscorer to date.

An all-round impressive performance sees us climb to the top spot in the table for the first time since November, although Grossbardorf still has their match of the week in hand.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Sadly for us, Grossbardorf walked all over Schalding with a 4-0 victory away from home, reclaiming the pole position.
Well, we didn't drop any more points, but now there are only ten games to go and we still have two points and eleven goals to make up to dethrone a team that just seems impossible to beat at the moment.

MARCH 2010

I am glad that at this point in the season the games are coming slower, with the occasional by-week to regain match fitness and and cure off all those little knocks and bruises.
Undefeated since Novembers defeat against Buchbach, we can't afford any more mishaps, but the new tactics are catching on and our defense looks tighter than ever before.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Coming from our convincing showing the week before, we performed with utmost confidence without being careless. We kept the ball secure on our side for much of the match and I am particularly impressed with our pass completion of over 80% during the match.
Alvaro Jalo scored his first goal for Bayreuth after joining us during the January transfers before freshly recovered Lucas Winck left his mark on the match with his two goals.

We conceded a late goal after a lapse of concentration, but it might very well have been caused by their focus being drawn to the scoreboard announcing that Grossbardorf had been held to a draw in their encounter with Bayern Hof.

Nine games left, nine goals to make up to lift the crown.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Just over one hundred people came out to witness a fairly average game that was decided by a quickfire double in the first half. Ali Abou-Saleh and Lucas Winck both capitalized on some beautiful passing play - team goals in the truest sense - in a match that was slow at times but had us prevent the opposition from even getting a single attempt at goal.

Grossbardorf kept the goal difference intact with their 3-1 over Ismaning.

The game started started akin to a tennis match with chances on both sides back to back, and the half-time score favored us a little, after the woodwork came to the rescue of a beaten Haessler in goal.
I believe everyone understood the urgency this late in the season and I didn't have to say a single word in the dressing room - we came out flying. Although we got the benefit of the doubt from the linesman at the first goal, Lucas Winck's second strike was indisputable.
Markus Goller was caught in the heat of the moment and left us to finish with one man down after a reckless tackle, but it was too late to change the score for Rosenheim.

All is forgiven to Ingolstadt as they managed to hold Grossbardorf to a goalless draw, helping us to regain the top spot once again, this time with a two point differential.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

March is in the past, Lucas Winck was without a doubt the top performer for us with five goals in three matches and we are back in the drivers seat with only seven games to go.
I just hope I can keep the team focused, and more importantly match fit and injury free during the coming fixtures.

APRIL 2010

April is about to start with almost two weeks to spend recovering and training before our next fixture. On one hand I am glad for the extended rest, on the other hand I am aware that we might loose our momentum.

Morale is great among my players, and I was able to use the extended period between matches to scout and sign a few more additions that will be joining us at the start of the coming season.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Let me be the first to say: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!
Sixty percent possession, three out of four passes completed, fifteen shots on target while preventing anything getting near our own goal, and yet we were unable to put anything past an outstanding Matuszek in goal.
I still can't believe we were held to a draw....

At least the new tactics now seem second nature to my guys and everything except the finishing was first class.
However, Grossbardorf overtook us once again in the table after demolishing Erlangen-Bruck 3-1, a devastating result as from all the teams remaining they looked the most likely to nick points off of our close contender.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Once again a game of complete dominance almost thwarted by allowing too many counter opportunities. Our wide pitch is simply leaving too much space for poachers to slip through.
Florian Wurster gave us the lead with his first goal of the season after his screamer from 30 yards cannonballed of the crossbar into the netting. Shoddy footwork after a corner kick allowed Wurzburg to draw level but Lucas Winck could once again be relied upon to tip the game in our favor. After getting punished by a clinical counter attack following a spell of almost complete dominance, Winck stepped up once more to claim the match winner.

From a neutral stance, a fantastic match, from my point of view I was a nervous wreck.
By the numbers, it shouldn't even have been close - 29 shots, nine clear-cut chances, four times denied by the woodwork and 67% possession tell a different story than the final score.
In any case, we got the points and our revenge for loosing two points to Wurzburg earlier in the season.

Grossbardorf increased the goal difference to us even further with their win over Ansbach.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

A very short month, two games played and we lost two vital points in our promotion bid.
Despite playing fantastic and beautiful to watch football, I can't really be happy about the final scores.
Furthermore, it doesn't seem likely at all that we are ever going to get close to first place on goal difference alone - although we need to win every game from now on, it's not entirely in our hand anymore to get to the top.

Although Lucas Winck was providing as usual, my man of the month was Fevzi Kahraman for his impressive defensive prowess.

Are you ready for this????
The unthinkable has happened:
GROSSBARDORF LOST THEIR MATCH AGAINST UNTERHACHING II

With one match in hand we once again have the chance to reclaim the top spot if we avoid defeat.

MAY 2010

If you were counting, there's now only five more matches left in the season, the biggest worry being a rivalry match against Bayern Hof at the end of the month.
My squad is healthy and match fit, and every single one of them seems to share the opinion I voiced to the press that we WILL lift the Bayrenliga trophy in five short weeks.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

OK, I think this is just about the point in any managers career where the bottle seems to be preferable to watching your dreams and ambitions wither away.
Whether it was the pressure or food poisoning or the season finale of 24 that caused us to play without showing any signs of the form that got us where we are today I will never know - we just played awful.
We were on the back-foot for almost the entire match - uninspired, unambitious and to tell the truth very lucky to only concede one goal.
Lucas Winck finally showed his determination and kept the dream alive by equalizing close to the final whistle.

One point ahead in the table, four matches to go.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Let me go out on a limb here and say it is somewhat embarrassing to concede two goals from one shot on goal allowed.
In any case, it was a great match and a deserved victory. We played slightly more defensive than usual to compensate for the wide pitch and had less possession than the opposition, but we certainly made it count more.
Abou-Saleh was once again on the score-sheet before Philip Obhafuoso managed to get one past the wrong goalkeeper to draw level at halftime.
Serge Kouadio recorded a fine hat-trick, the last goal coming from the spot just minutes after Ismaning pulled one back.
Makes me almost sad that I had already agreed on a transfer of Kouadio at the start of the next season - despite todays impressive performance, he is just not settling in well.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

This is football. The highest scoring goal of the season in front of the biggest crowd of the season recorded at 1982 spectators.
Ali Abou-Saleh scored no less than four goals today. Fevzi Kahraman once again demonstrated his impressive heading ability after a set-piece and Riedel just rubbed it in in stoppage time.
I have to respect Koetzing for not giving up after going four goals down, and they were rewarded with two goals that, although impressive, were simply not enough.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Two games left, the next fixture is having us welcoming our rivals from Bayern Hof.
The team is fired up, although the media pundits seems to only give us an outside chance of emerging victorious. And one would think by now we have proven that we deserve where we stand in the table.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Well.....put that in your pipe and smoke it, media pundits!!!
Four shots, one on target allowed while we connected 80% of our passes in a game that saw Lucas Winck become joint-record holder of most goals scored in a match by bagging four.
In front of a new record crowd of 3393 delighted supporters we played what is our most impressive performance to date.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

May was the most exciting month to date. Lucas Winck and Ali Abou-Saleh were both outstanding as my first choice strike team.
However, my man of the month is Serge Kouadio for his unexpectedly fantastic performances this month.
One last match to follow, one that looks so easy on paper, but sees us facing Buchbach, one of only two teams to beat us this season.
We will need all our players to perform, we are still only one single point ahead on the table

I will skip the final match report to show you this:

An exciting season has ended, and what a ride it was.
We had a string of fantastic results, fantastic performances and it was a thrill-ride until the very final whistle.
My dangerous plan seems to have worked out in the end since we still have a pretty respectable balance in the bank despite me stretching the wage budget to its limits and beyond.

In the coming days I will start scouting the field for a new backroom staff as I decided not to renew the contract of most of them. There will be a lot of change in the next few weeks with players being allowed to leave as free agents and many more players joining in our fight against relegation in the upcoming campaign.

END OF THE 2009/2010 SEASON

Authors Note:

Thank you all for reading so far. Summing up the first season took a whole lot longer than I expected, and I still have half of the coming season to add before I can enter "real-time mode" - at times I find myself re-watching the entire match before I write up the summary, something I have never done before. It's been really great writing all this down and I hope I can keep this alive for quite a few seasons to come.

POSTSEASON 2009 / PRESEASON 2010

After the excitement of the season is starting to wear off and our heart-rate is getting back to a survivable level, the team and myself took a well deserved break.

As was expected, we finished the season with a slight profit and were granted the license for the Regionalliga Sued. A new sponsorship deal was announced and preliminary season ticket sales have increased around 20% over last year.
This year we will also be seeded for the DFB Pokal, the only national cup tournament.

Having seen what some South-American flair can do to our play in the shape of our top signing Lucas Winck, I decided to use my vacation to secretly scout for potential additions to our squad in Brazil.
As you might remember, there is no work permit required for us to sign players, we are merely limited to no more than three Non-EU players in our squad. With Philip Obhafuoso already being a vital part of my next squad and Serge Kouadio leaving early July I have two spots remaining that I intend to make count.

I have once again asked the board to find a suitable parent-club that can help us compete.
The coming season will certainly be a challenge - we will have to compete with no less than seven B-Squads of Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga clubs.

Leading up to the news season there were rumors about several high-profile clubs being interested in appointing me at their clubs, with FC Porto and Tottenham amidst the big names, but I respectfully asked them to not make an official offer as I very much intend to continue what I started here in my hometown.

JULY 2010

Before our first match of the season towards the end of the month - a friendly home fixture against Hertha BSC Berlin - there were a lot of things happening off the pitch.

First with two very delightful news items:

First, we are now officially a professional football club. This will certainly help attract better talent to the "Altstadt".

I signed a number of new coaches and scouts, and experienced former Schalke player and Bochum manager Bernard Dietz has agreed to join us as my assistant.

picture.php

The second news item is arguably even better:

More great news for our team. We found a Bundesliga outfit as our parent club. Although having just escaped relegation in the previous season, being linked with Nurnberg is a great move for us - I am not sure if I share the enthusiasm from their side, but for us it is magnificent.

I am a little bit surprised that they have agreed in light of the fact that we will be sharing the league with their very own B-squad, Nurnberg II, but I certainly won't complain.
With the step up to professional football and the adjusted contracts of my players I am already close to my new wage budget (one I am actually intending to stick to), and even with allocating all of the roughly forty thousand Euros I was given for transfers towards the wages, I am left with little room.
So, no surprise, following the announcement I sent Dietz straight over there to compile a loan report for me.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Leading up to the first friendly outings of the new season, the media sees us with little to no chance at all to stay in the league and predicts a dire last place for us.
I am more confident than that, and I believe that I managed to find a few fantastic new additions to the squad, but only time will tell.

PRESEASON 2010 TRANSFER UPDATES

Starting during the last few months and up until now, my scouts and me spend countless hours securing the signatures of quite a few hot new additions to our line up.

We let go a few of our previous squad and even managed to make some money on actual transfers, but I am delighted with the talent that we were able to sign up, for a staggering total of only 55 Euro.

The top signings were no doubt the Brazilian attacking duo of Fabio Lemes and Rodriguinho, Bulgarian veteran Daniel Georgiev and - what could prove one of the best captures to date - sixteen year old Leonardo Bacci, whose market value jumped to two hundred thousand Euros before the ink on his contract had dried.
Two highly rated loan players from Nurnberg are sure to make for a formidable squad.

Here's the early seasons transfers at a glance:

picture.php

There are a few more players that were signed during the closing stages of the previous season that cannot be found in the list. Most were signed as backups to the new signings, except two equally skilled German goalkeepers, Philip Pentke and Jan Schlosser.

And here is an in-depth look at some of the most exciting signings

Daniel has very good all-round skills for this level and I can see him forming a formidable partnership with Philip Obhafuoso in the middle of the pitch.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

A perfect poacher prospect for the coming season. My scouts tell me he has serious problems putting them away, but we all agree his great pace should make him a very dangerous striker.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

A strong striker that I intend to use in rotation with highly injury-prone Lucas Winck.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Honestly, I still cannot believe we were able to sign this guy for free. His physical abilities are unbelievable for someone this young, and I am confident that regular first-team appearances will serve him well to develop the mental skills required to become a rock in the back.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

The pre-season friendlies were a mixed bag, but a great opportunity to evaluate my players. We played admirably against some much stronger opponents like Hertha BSC Berlin, 1860 Munchen and Nurnberg and recorded a solid victory over Aalen, a team in our own league predicted to finish in the top third of the table.
Testing a squad of all new signings and back-ups saw us go down to lower league outfit Hauenstein, but it gave me a chance to determine which players can be counted on to step up to the plate when we needed them.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

DFB POKAL 2010

picture.php

Facing off against Bundesliga powerhouse Bayer Leverkusen I am honestly surprised at the result. Over long stretches it was a very even game against a side fielding no less than six players from this years wold-cup winning Germany national squad.
The first half was a great battle between both teams, with Philip Pentke shining over and over again, despite being credited for an own goal.
More than thirteen thousand spectators saw us emerging from the half-time break revitalized and motivated, testing Rene Adler in goal time and time again, however to no avail. A deadly counter ended all hopes of an upset close to the final whistle, but we have certainly shown that we came here to compete.

I am pleased to see the new signings blending in well with the squad, and the very small pitch size we opted for this year might very well be a great factor in our home performances in the coming season - it is a perfect fit for our tactics.
Along with the defeat, the biggest let-down is an injury to Fevzi Kahraman, our rock in the back.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

July gave us all a chance to get a better look at our squad. We faced some tough opposition, and the performances I was able to witness leave me hopeful for the coming season.
I believe we have a very ambitious group of players this year.
This was evidenced in particular by the last press conference, where I went out on a limb and boldly proclaimed that I consider us favorites to win the league.
While the media seems to see it as a joke, my team appeared motivated by my showing of confidence.

Regionalliga Süd 2010/2011

With the kick-off time to the new season just around the corner I am confident we have what it takes to make an impact. No one outside the club seems to share my optimism, but the dream has to start somewhere, and if I don't show faith I can't in good conscience expect anyone else to believe in us.

August will see us face some tough opposition, most notable hot favorites to win the league Stuttgarter Kickers.

My players are all fit, motivated and ready to be registered for the new season.

AUGUST 2010

picture.php

A tough match to start the season, and a very good showing from my guys. Against the B-Squad of 2. Bundesliga outfit Karlsruhe, we allowed only two shots all game, and only one even reaching the grateful hands of Pentke in goal.
On the other side, we played some beautiful passing game and created lots of chances, but missed the target too often with our attempts.
Being denied three times by the woodwork, I would consider us unlucky to not have won, but proving all the pundits wrong that predicted us loosing heavily was well worth dropping two points.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Boy, did we ever turn the style **** to eleven in this match.
High possession, great pass completion and immense pressure on the opposition saw us running out victorious.
Despite going down one goal in the first half it never seemed likely that we wouldn't emerge victorious. We played on as if nothing had happened and equalized when new signing Max Watzka launched a rocket from the edge of the area.
Immense pressure caused an error by SV Waldorf Mannheims defense that allowed Obhafuoso to score from the spot before last years top goal scorer Lucas Winck finished an excellent move for the final result.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

At even odds we were expecting a close game, but it turned out anything but that.
We were once again able to dominate the game for almost the entire duration, our defense being able to prevent all but one shot to even reach our own goal.
At the other end we were constantly testing the keeper and finishing the game with four goals to our side. New signing Georgiev scored his first goal, along with loan player Stiefler before Lucas Winck once again showed class by scoring two more.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

League favorites Stuttgarter Kickers were expected to heavily dominate this match, but in reality it was almost an exact replica of the season opener with us showing a rock-solid defense but being unable to direct a majority of our own shots at target.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

A tough month has ended, and it was a more than spectacular showing from my team.
Our first few outings as a professional team have seen us remain undefeated where we were expected to wither and we can be found at the top of table.
With four games played there isn't any real showing yet as to what team to beat with draws and defeats even by highly rated teams.
I am more than satisfied with how we presented ourselves so far, and with a little bit of luck we just might keep this run going a little while longer.

You guessed it, Lucas Winck will once again receive the accolade of my player of the month award.
__________________________________________________ _______________________

SEPTEMBER 2010

picture.php

Our second encounter with a 2.Bundesliga B-Squad was certainly not one for the purists.
Too many fouls never allowed for a flowing game, but our increased pressure in the oppositions box led to mistakes that allowed Obhafuoso to score twice from the spot
Fabio Lemes capped a nice move with his first goal in a Bayreuth jersey.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

In all honesty, I did not see this one coming. And I really expected the link between our two teams being capped after this match and their loan players being recalled.
Only 52 seconds after the kick-off Fabio Lemes showed his Brazilian flair by burying the ball in the top corner. Georgiev scored only minutes later from an impossible angle after a weak clearance following a corner kick found his waiting boot to increase our lead.
Stiefler added one more against his own club just before halftime.
In a bizarre fashion, Philip Obhafuoso finished the rout with a shot that hit both goal posts before rolling in after striking the ball with such force that he pulled a hamstring and needed to come off, following his celebration.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Stiefler pulled all the strings in this match, filling the playmaker role left vacant by injured Obhafuoso. After being a vital part in the build-up that let Rodriguinho score his first two goals of the season he earned himself a goal all of his own.
Rodriguinho failed to record his hat-trick after he missed from the spot, but at this point the match was all but over.
Even the consolation goal by Darmstadt did little to diminish a fantastic result.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Two month in the season, with seven out of thirty-four games played I couldn't be any more satisfied with where we are at.
Everybody is playing beyond what I expected to see, the back-up players are solid as can be when called upon, and we dominated many games to an extend that allowed me to give my hottest prospect Leonardo Bacci some valuable first-team playing time.

Although there are many players that are deserving of my man of the month award, after what I have seen happening these last few games, I will do a first and nominate non-player JP Woody without whose tactics these results might very well have looked a whole lot different.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

OCTOBER 2010

picture.php

A fantastic showing against our neighbors from Bamberg saw us once again dominate almost every aspect of the game in front of over three thousand expectant fans.
Despite scoring with their only shot on goal, Bamberg was never a real threatand a goal by Fabio Lemes followed by a magnificent hat-trick courtesy of Manuel Stiefler had us record our forth victory in a row.
The most heart-warming moment was undoubtedly seeing loan player Stiefler kissing the Bayreuth badge on his shirt after his third strike found the net.
With performances like this I will have some serious considerations to make to explore the possibility of making his move permanent.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Coming off a high, not taking this game as well was kind of a let-down.
The performance and the numbers showed us as the slightly better team, but great a great defensive display by Aalen meant this game ended in a draw.
As far as goalless games go, this was one of the better ones.

_________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

The final score belies what really happened on the pitch, and off all the games so far this season, this result flattered us the most. Rodriguinho scored from our only real chance while at the other end Pentke stopped no less than twelve shots in the first half alone.
Shots were raining in from all angles and he was ever present to tip balls wide that he had no right of getting to.
We played more composed and organized in the second half, but in the light of things the late equalizer by Aschaffenburg was no less than a fair reflection of the game.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

After being on the back-foot for much of last weeks game, we were back in our dominating selves, but sadly with the same result. It seems to me that Fevzi Kahraman has developed telekinetic skills by bringing down an opponent in the box without even being close to him, but Rodriguinho evened the score in the second half.
Despite huffing and puffing we were unable to break 1860 Munchens defense down for a match winner, and so were left slightly disappointed.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Eleven matches played since the start of the season, and we remain unbeaten in the league.
It becomes more clear now that there is no clear powerhouse in the Regionalliga, unlike last years Grossbardorf who just wouldn't loose any points, and so we are still running strong at the top end of the table.
I think in the big picture, loosing a few points in last couple of pictures is just what we need to avoid complacency to creep into our unit, and I am starting to believe that we might actually in contention until the end of the season.

OCTOBER 2010

picture.php

After last months impressive play I am pleased that we improved our performance by actually putting away a large portion of the chances we created.
It seems we are getting more support from the media as we were touted clear favorites for this one, and we more than delivered. Six goals by six different players, each more amazing than the last, tell the story of a rewarding team effort.

All this culminated in this impressive selection for team of the week:

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

We saw a return to the times when we couldn't even get half of our shots on target during this encounter with visiting SpVgg Weiden.
All in all a decent match with lots of great play in midfield but not enough accuracy to put the chances we had away.
I suppose the two weeks since the last match were too long to keep the momentum going.
I might need to look into getting some more friendlies arranged for the coming gaps in the schedule.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Yet another match against a 2.Bundesliga B-Squad had us return to winning ways.
Philip Obhafuoso scored from the spot after an arguably questionable call by the referee and added yet another in the second half with a booming shot in the top corner.
Once more, we dominated the midfield with quick and precise passes and clinical tackles.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Another great month, and I am starting to wonder what alien life-form has taken over the bodies of my squad to create performances such as this.
I can't even pick a favorite for man of the month, it was all team all the time.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

NOVEMBER 2010

picture.php

About fifteen hundred people came out to watch a game that is hard to describe as anything but an attempt by Ulm to not concede too many goals. The oppositions attacking never looked threatening, and after Fabio Lemes and Georgiev had gotten their names on the scoresheet, Ulm was simply shutting down defensively.
We probably could have scored more, but I decided to ease off the pressure to avoid getting any unnecessary injuries from overzealous defenders.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

Of all the matches in our schedule, this was the one I was tipping as the most likely to be recorded as a defeat. Hoffenheims B-Squad was fielding a strong line-up, but we came really together and performed like all of us were growing up playing together.
I am particularly pleased that we have shown to be a threat from all angles, as evidenced once again by three different players recording a goal.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

A sizable crowd of just over four thousand fans came out to witness what turned out to be a rather forgettable game. Most of the action was in the midfield and chances on both sides were often wide or blocked by great defending.
Philip Obhafuonso scored from the spot once again with what was our only shot on goal.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

Last weeks match marked the half-way point of the season, and we are still surprising everybody by being top of the table with an undefeated run of seventeen games.

It's anyones guess if we can continue this run, if the point difference we accumulated is enough and if we can avoid any injury crisis to be able to field a strong line-up.

From what I have seen in this first round of games I truly believe we are among the strongest teams in the league.
We had some luck to get points out of some of the close games and dropped a few points in games we should have won, so on the whole, I think we deserve where we stand.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

picture.php

We ended the year with this quick friendly to boost finances and fan support. More than twelve thousand spectators saw us fight valiantly against a much stronger opposition.
By chances alone it could have gone either way, but Schalke showed they know how to capitalize on their opportunities.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

JANUARY 2011

picture.php

We started in the new year with a match that closely resembled our first encounter with Karlsruhe II at the start of the campaign.
This time, however, luck was not on our side and four thousand supporters were forced to watch our unbeaten run end.
All I can say is that we need to improve our finishing, as we once again were unable to get more than three of our eighteen shots on target.

__________________________________________________ _______________________

After eighteen games played, the start of the new year sees us sitting comfortably on top of the table, despite just having been handed our first defeat of the season.

Sixteen games to go, and all fingers crossed that last weeks match doesn't mark the beginning of our fall from grace.
