McAllister played primarily as a midfielder, in a successful career spanning over nineteen years. He started his career at local side Motherwell before moving south of the border to Leicester City at the age of 20. He then went on to play for Leeds United, and he later had spells at Coventry City intersected by a brief, yet successful, stint at Liverpool.

McAllister also represented his national side for nine years, winning 57 caps and scoring five goals. His leadership qualities were noticed, and he spent four successful years as Scotland captain in addition to two seasons as Leeds United captain. He was awarded an MBE in the 2001 New Year Honours in recognition of his contribution to football.

As his playing career drew to a close he decided to enter the managerial side of the game. He did this first during his second stay at Coventry when he was appointed manager in April 2002. He resigned a month later and did not enter management again until he returned to Elland Road in January 2008 to replace Dennis Wise. In April 2011, McAllister became the caretaker manager at Premier League club Aston Villa, due to the ill health of manager Gérard Houllier.

McAllister was appointed first team coach at Liverpool in July 2015. He left the position on 8 October 2015 after the sacking of Brendan Rodgers, but was appointed to an ambassadorial position at the club which he has subsequently now left to take over the SPL minnows.

"We look at teams like Hearts , Aberdeen , Dundee United and we think that there is nothing but ourselves that stops us from being that size and ran the way they are ran and that is why we brought in Gary he ticked all the boxes for us.

  • Forward thinking coach
  • Knows the club
  • A name known worldwide
  • Tactical and Leadership qualities

It's these skills that have given us faith that Gary Can push on here and We can both move forward"

"I firmly believe in my own ability to develop this club into something more than it already is , I will be using some of my contacts into improving player development and recruitment"

"The players know they have to train right , eat right , play right that's what I done and I played for 23 years and won a Uefa cup , FA cup , won 57 caps for my country and there is nothing to stop the boys here doing the same"

"My aim is top 6 this year with some good cup runs and to improve player development to help improve the club's playing ability and hopefully off the back of that the financial footprint of the club"

-Gary McAllister

Having spent time with Gerard Houllier and Brendan Rodgers I knew that I wanted football to be played the right way with patience , fitness , passing the ball at the key of my own tactics.

I know I have a lot to learn in the game still at the age of 50 with this being the first real managers job of my own , where I can show what I have learned and that I can step up from being a no.2.

Speaking of number 2's - I need to look to bring in my own coaching team and players

I have managed to speak to my old friend at Liverpool Iain Ayre and talked him into arranging Liverpool's first team to come to Fir Park for my first game in charge of the club for a friendly.

I asked Iain if he could ask Mr Klopp to bring as strong a team as he possibly could which he kindly agreed to "Ask" the question.

the next few days were solely resolved into getting the players to understand my "Philosophy"

View attachment 204218

The first few sessions were all around physicality and fitness , I had the boys running and running and running.

"You need to feel as good in the last minute as you do the first"

We also brought in some drills that are a little bit more unconventional again through speaking with some of my contacts we managed to get some of the material from the NFL and we had the guys through the famous "Oklahoma drill"

I wanted us to be strong and fit going into every game and that's what this method is designed for.

Two playes in a square and using only your hands and feet you have to push the other person out the square.

Needless to say it got competitive but that's what we wanted.

Some exciting times off the field just now at fir park...

We have spread our name a little bit more across Europe first off all linking up with cliftonville from Norther Ireland on a youth recruitment policy we will have first choice of any young players the produce which can only be a good thing for ourselves.

Then the big deal with Montpellier who will look to send Young prospects over to ourselves on a basis that they have paid us to be part of which is a win win for this club on and off the field.

Montpellier have produced players like Oliver Giroud , Remy Cabella , Mapou Yanga Mbiwa in recent years so this deal really excites me if we can pick up the right youth product.

Well things are starting to look positive for us , making the right traction in the right places.

Gary McAllister's first move as manager of Motherwell was certainly one that the fans will love as club legend James Mcfadden returns for his 3rd spell at the club.

Mcfadden who has played 113 games for Motherwell scoring 42 goals has said.

"When I got the call to work with Gary who I know from the Scotland set up and when he explained to me what he wanted to do at the club that will always be in my heart I knew I had to come back"

-James Mcfadden

"You just have to look at what faddy can do with the ball , he brings a sense of comfort for players as you know that he has the ability to step up on any occasion he done it in the hardest league in the world with Everton and for Scotland on the international stage and he knows this club better than many so it makes perfect sense"

- Gary McAllister

"It was always going to be a tough start especially when you look at the line up that Liverpool brought , some of these players could go straight into 99% of the teams in the world."

"The boys gave a good account of themselves some of these young kids will need to use this experience as there will be nothing harder than this"
