I had this same problem. What I ended up doing was searching for positions and then specifying the attributes I deemed to be important for that role. Or you could use the attributes the game specifies as good for that role. It's a pain but it was the only way I could figure to do it.

Really good read, thank you. One of my goals when I play FM is always to have a youth system which consistently churns out prospects to either push into the first team or sell on but I never quite manage it.

I've been having some moderate success with a simple 442 at Alfreton. It's good defensively and in terms of possession but seems to be lacking in the scoring department. Sort of.
