I figured out what I was doing wrong :) You have to manually register players to the B team. You do that by going onto the B team squad then onto the registration tab and selecting the playing you want to be registered (just like with the first team).
I assumed the B team manager would do this...
Atletico Madrid. A narrow 4-2-2-2 is my favourite formation and they just happen to play that and have a great squad with loads of prospects like Jose Gimenez, Javi Manquillo, Saul Niguez, Oliver Torres and Leo Baptistao :) I love Simeone's appraoch so I'll be trying to replicate it...
The obvious answer is they need good attributes for the position I want to play them. But they also need to have a good work rate and teamwork for my style of play. Most importantly I only use players with a strong mentality.
