General Ben is right. Use a large database. I use also use, add top players from division - (continent) europe. You could try either adding all players from a nation (slows the game dramatically) or just top players from the league. I would disagree too. As a novice it would be a lot easier...

It's possibly your graphics. Maybe try reinstalling your graphics card or revert the drivers to an older version. Also update Directx. Run the game in admin mode, disable 'Desktop Compisition' + 'Desktop Visual Themes'? Maybe this will help.
