Are you doing it through player search? If so, untick the box that says "exclude own players"

Oh, and it worked after I did a clean reinstall and generated faces for the same save from scratch. I'll see if reinstalling the game but making a backup of the profile first fixes the invalid RTF file error.

take a look at the config.xml file in the faces folder, it should contain players whose appearance has been changed. Perhaps it is too small or empty? Either way I'd recommend updating to the newest version, where "preserve" does work, so you can save yourself a bit of work.
