The roles I chose in my last post were just suggestions and could likely be improved upon. You'd best look at what positions/roles your players are best suited for in their profile screen and go from there.
All your formations have defenders on defend, midfielders on support and strikers on attack. I suggest you assign different duties and roles to all lines. Taking your flat 4-3-3 as an example, change that to:
CF/att - DLF/sup - AF/att
CM/sup - BWM/def - AP/att
WB/att - CD/def - CD/def - WB/att...
Save for your centre backs, I find manually setting the closing down at the same point for the whole squad works really well. You might have to play around a bit until you find your notch, but I've been rock solid at the back since I've been using this.

Thanks for all your replies. If improvement of consistency is solely dependant on RNG, I'll just not worry about it and stop signing tutors for that reason.
As long as it can go up a bit, I'd be happy. I want to use my youth to strengthen my squad, but I don't want to risk half my team having off days somewhere down the line.
