Play Rooney as an advanced forward, he is excellent as an advanced forward,. Berbatov is a good Deep Lying Forward, but I dont know what would happen is he the lone striker (I have never tried it out)
I set my top 2 headers challenging the keeper and the I have the next 2 good headers attacking the near post and the far post (although I rarely score from the far post :P) and all my corners are into delivered into the 6 yard box.
I agree with Blueshooter. And dont sell Drogba. He might have lost pace, but he is still quite good. He has been playing well for me. So keep him as a sub :)
And also, Ballack doesnt perform for me, so I retrained Mikel to MC and he scored some scremaers for me. :)

You are right, a lot of players struggle in their second season. What I did was, I analyzed my team's performance and sold all the useless or declining players. And I brought some new ones to the team. Every year, it is recommended that you strengthen your squad.
