Tried to keep your old tactic alive the best I could.
Would this version also work wonders with a smaller team? Would counter still be okay to play with?
To be honest, never used it with the default data base. But it shouldn't matter, as the match engine is update, no matter what players play where. I just use the winter transfer update because I like the players at Norwich / Strassbourg after.
Main thing you should look out for is a decent goalkeeper and probably no slow defenders. Buy defenders like Jeffrey Bruma and/or Ryan Shawcross. Decent goalkeepers; Jack Butland, John Ruddy or Jeroen Zoet. I believe having good reflexes is a must, as your opponent probably scores alot from set...
My version does still great for me. Below some results with Strassbourg (first season), lowest ligue in France.

I smashed the Championship with Norwich City. Almost perfect run. Only lost two matches first season, won League Cup. Lost the final of the FA Cup. Second season I won the Europa League.
Still not to happy with the striker. Right now I am using a Poacher, which seems to work much better for me.
My defense is actually pretty solid. My defenders do mark tightly. Maybe that is a thing? Also, my fullbacks are Tyrone Mings, Callum Chambers and Sam Byram. Maybe they can't be to offensive?
Changing the left MC to Roaming playmaker, and the right CM to CM with def does make a huge difference! Many more goals and not many goals against. Try it out and let me know how it works for others.
Use this for both home AND away games. I've modified it slightly (again), to make sure I receive less goals. Also, remember, NEVER USE slow defenders. They will destroy this tactic. No OIs needed.

Correct. I use it home AND away. The main thing to watch out for is havin NO SLOW defenders... Or you will be crushed by players like Juan Cuadrado and the like.

It is because your mentality isn't offensive. Both CMs are laying back, waiting to strike back. Your defense will be the ones that clear the line of fire. I have many cleansheets, even with Norwich City. Just buy a quality goalkeeper like John Ruddy or Jack Butland.
