The whole point is to play the ball from left to right for a midfielder / striker to run through the defence.
Right inverted wing-back play central and help building up the play (support instructions) - left inverted wing-back push the defence and draws defenders/midfielders out of position;
Left winger works as a bond and helps players transitioning from defence to constructive play lowering the pressure on the central area;
More info following
Let's talk a bit about needed attributes:
CBs : overall defensive stats (don't forget mental stats) + decent-to-good passing stats (vision, ball control,passing...) + good pace (12/13 or more, don't underestimate).
Right IWB : defensive stats, decent pace (13+), good movement stats (off the ball + positioning) and overall good stats for what you would play as a midfielder.
Left IWB : same as the right one, but better if more pacey (14+), decent finishing (10+) and composure. Basically, for IWBs you want players you can also play as box-to-box, ideally. CORE ROLE
Deep Lying Playm : has to be good at playing the ball. Passing, vision, creativity, off the ball and so on, PLUS decent/good defensive capabilities (tackling, marking, positioning...)
Box-to-Box midf : basically a well rounded player. Look for both defensive and offensive (positioning, off the ball, tackling, finishing atleast decent (11+), pace (12+), aggression from 12 to 16, workrate, dribbling, passing, technique, decisions...
Attacking midf : one of the more important roles in the tactic. Overall you need good stats for a midfielder (check box-to-box above) + this needs an extra tweak in the offensive attributes. CORE ROLE
Left winger : with support role, it has to link defensive and offensive phases. Most of the players around him will tend to run through the defense so this player is needed when the team has to counterattack (sort of a bond role). Stick with overall attributes for a wing (atleast 14 for pace stats, dribbling and so on), plus ideally: good passing, decisions, vision, teamwork, and all the attributes that might effect the team around him. NOTE: you can enable/disable the 'take more risks' on the left winger depending on the player you have there. If good with their passing, vision, creativity (and teamplay) you can leave it on, otherwise you can also turn it off!
Poacher : attacking attributes (finishing, composure, off the ball ... all above 14), pace, PLUS ideally passing, vision, teamwork, decisions. Basically he not only has to score but also pass the ball properly to those who will run behind him (and behind the defence). Imagine him as a Complete Forward. Why it's set as a Poacher then? Well, because the Poacher does not have the Move into Channels instruction set by default, which is in fact set off. Also, considering the amount of attacking players in this tactic, i needed a player that just served as striker for the central portion of the pitch. Try different players and let me know! I used technical players but you can also try with more physical ones CORE ROLE
Trequartista : not seen much lately in FM uh? What's good about him is the possibility to completely customize his instructions. So, it's set like a right wing (stay wide - run wide) but also take more risks and cross less often (you can't cross less often with a winger!) . The result is a player that starts wide and then plays for his strenghts. Needed stats: technique, passing, off the ball, vision, creativity, first touch, decisions, teamwork (good stats this time, better if above 14-15 for a good team, higher for a ucl team)... but also physical stats, because this Trequartista plays wide. So... pace/agility/balance and decent stamina. This ideally has to be the best player in your team / the one to build up the play around. CORE ROLE
Results with this tactic have been very good for my testing, expecially considering it does not abuse any weird engine flaws, it's asymmetrical on the pitch, and also use less-often seen roles! ^^
