Could anyone recommend a team to study who play or have played 4-1-4-1 successfully as a regular formation (as opposed to away day bus parking)?

Trying to recollect one, but am struggling. Not really sure how best to set up the central midfield with a true 4-1-4-1 formation (as opposed to switching to a 4-1-2-2-1 formation in attack) in a standard/control variant. Do the midfielders get staged with dmc - mc - mca? Or do the two central midfielders try to bomb forward together, leaving the DMC at home to cover them?

It's a horrid, vile, formation which brings back horrific memories (long past and recent) of seeing Everton play. ;) But I think it would be a useful addition to the armoury for a weaker team trying to stay up or even a 'lesser' topflight team in Europe.

i would like to help but i truly dont understand :| lol.

Sorry Gatid - it's been a long night :D

I'm looking for a real-life team which plays or played a true 4-1-4-1 formation all the time, the bigger the better really as it makes grabbing footage of them playing easier for me to find :)

Or if someone knows the answer to my questions above, that's equally cool - I want to create a 4-1-4-1 pack to go with the 4-4-2.

this is a total and utter **** of a tactic. i guess you would have your mcs bomb forward to support the lone striker and help the wingers out, but ive tried this tactic with "the nike defense" theory and you dominate games but don't score as much as you would with a 4-4-2 formation. it's a total mind **** if ya ask me

Rangers got to the uefa cup final playing that way, but it was worst football ever to watch, wouldn't wanna study that you might die of boredom lol.

I don't know if you could count Scotland in that category when we play Hartley in the holding role. That normally ends up as a 4-1-3-1-1 though.

Cheer's lads. Rangers was the closest I could find, especially on away days in Europe. It's rare to see the 'pure' form of it. West Ham played it a bit a couple of seasons ago, but then they altered it and avoided relegation :D

Manchester City??? In reality, their wingers are push up to make a kinda 4-3-3, but in reality, it is a 4-1-4-1 when Robinho is up front....
