Okay, so after having a play around on the 2010 demo, and getting frustrated at a few transfers (or lack there of), i decided to have a knock at our national side. After countless games where the England manager has been booted for not being successful in a major championship over the past few years got me intrigued. Are England capable of winning the World Cup?

Yes, definately
Once it doesnt go to penalties, or if its very late in ET and Thierry Henry is in the box for a free kick

July 2009

F.A. Indicate expectations; Qualify for the forthcoming World Cup.
Already being in a very strong group position, i decided to treat these games almost like friendlies (I know these have been faults to both Sven and McLaren, but trust me, i'm going somewhere :P)

First decision i was faced with; Almunia for England?
He is obviously a very good keeper, but do i really need him? I would consider David James my first choice goalkeeper but he has his injury worries. Would i have sufficient back-up? I Attended a couple of Man Utd fixtures and witnessed Ben Foster keep a clean sheet in both the Community shield, in which he saved 2 penalties, and looked dominant of his area. Also, a cleen-sheet against rivals Man City, facing the likes of Robinho, Tevez, Adebayor. I was very impressed.

Witnessed Blackburn's Paul Robinson concede three goals against Bolton (Yes, Bolton Scoring 3 away!) and didn't look a shade of the once Tottenham player.

I then opted to watch a league cup game between Leeds United and Charlton Athletic, to have a look at a local boy, Shane Higgs (previously at Cheltenham Town). He impressed with his ability to come off of his line and helped Leeds to a comfortable 3-1 win.

If David James was kept fit, i had no reason to replace him as the England number 1. If not fit, i had great confidence in Ben Foster to step up, so they took two goalkeeping places respectively. As i needed to register three goalkeepers, it was basically down to a choice of Almunia and Higgs. Maybe my soft spot for my old Cheltenham boy got the better of me, but i couldn't see myself playing a Spanish person, in an English team. Shane Higgs got the call up.

****** Henry
we were robbed
that performance alone justified a place in the WC
Im Irish btw

its alright lol. in my old games, when i was a manager of a country, i would specially look out for players who are not from the particular country but have its nationality (eg. mauricio tarrico (used to play for spurs and had english nationality), emerson thome (bolton) in cm 03/04) and call them up to play them cos i found it quite fun lol. anyway, good luck on your world cup journey :P

Novo on his debut for Scotland for me scored against Portugal in a 2-2 Draw.

06/07/2009 - Friendly vs. Holland

After watching a handful of games, it was time to submit a team worthy of beating a strong Dutch team.

David James not recovered so Ben Foster deputizes with Joe Hart making the bench.
Didn't have many games to go by, so the first squad was picked mainly from reputation. Fringe players were removed and i tried to pick a young team capable of rotation, whilst baring my preferred formation in mind (loosely based around Sven's 4-4-2 Diamond).

The Squad to face Holland:

Goalkeepers
Ben Foster, Paul Robinson, Joe Hart

Defenders
Glen Johnson, Micah Richards, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Joleon Lescott, Matthew Upson, Wayne Bridge, Ashley Cole.

Midfielders
Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Scott Parker, Joey Barton, Ashley Young, James Milner.

Forwards
Wayne Rooney, Gabby Agbonlahor, Kevin Davies, Michael Owen.

Back-up
David Beckham, Sol Campbell, Theo Walcott.

Good squad. I picked Arca a few times because he could play for England, :P

Sol Campbell for back-up? Why not Woodgate or Ledley King?
