ABERDEEN FOOTBALL CLUB
THE PAST
Founded in 1903, Aberdeen, nicknamed "The Dons" (or the sheep shaggers) have won 19 major trophies to be the 3rd most successful club in Scotland. They played their first ever game on the 15th of August (my birthday) against Stenhousemuir which ended in a 1-1 draw. They were accepted into the 2nd division of the Scottish Football League and a year later they were bumped up to the top division where they have remained ever since - a record only shared with Celtic (and Rangers before they went bust).
Their ground, Pittodrie, which means "place of manure" has been the clubs only stadium thus far and has been at the forefront of development in British football grounds as it was the first ever to have a dugout and was the first all seated, all covered stadium in Britain. The record attendance was in 1954 when over 54,000 saw a match against Hearts.
Aberdeen won the odd trophy during the 50's, 60's and 70's and should have been the first Scottish club to compete in the European Cup but for astupid decision by the SFA. It wasnt until Alex Ferguson came to the club as manager that their greatest period in their history came along..............
From 1978 to 1986 Aberdeen won 3 league championships, 4 Scottish Cups, 1 League Cup, 1 Dryborough Cup and most famously of all 1 European Cup-Winners Cup and 1 European Super Cup as along with Dundee United the "New Firm" dominated Scottish football and pushed Rangers and Celtic aside.
Their greatest moment of course was the 2-1 victory in Gothenburg over Real Madrid when Eric Black and John Hewitt scored the goals to win the cup. They then beat the European Cup holders, Hamburg, to be the number one club in Europe.
When Fergie left the trophies dried up as they seemed to specialise in finishing 2nd to Rangers although a cup double was won in 1990. They narrowly avoided relegation in the mid 90's and won the league cup in 1995 but in the late 1999 under Ebbe Skovdahl (Michael and Brian Laudrup's uncle) Aberdeen somehow finished bottom, avoiding relegation due to Falkirk's stadium not being acceptable for the top division but reached both cup finals which they lost.
The noughties werent great either with the highlight being a European run where the Dons came up against Dnipro, Lokomotiv Moscow, Atletico Madrid, Panathinaikos, FC Kobenhavn and Bayern Munich as they managed to get to the knockout stage.
Former players include Scottish football greats Alex McLeish, Willie Miller, Jim Leighton, Gordon Strachan and Bobby Clark. Their record scorer is Joe Harper while they also had Zoltan Varga who replaced Johann Cruyff at Ajax.
Their record transfer fee spent was 1m for Paul Bernard from Oldham Athletic in 1995 while their record transfer fee recouped was the 1.75m for Eoin Jess from Coventry City a little bit later.

THE PRESENT
After a wait of 18 years, Aberdeen won their first trophy since 1995 by beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the League Cup final under the stewardship of Derek McInnes. That has brought the feelgood factor back to Pittodrie and there is high hopes for the upcoming season.
The current squad has the experience of Barry Robson, Russell Anderson and Jamie Langfield, the flair of David Goodwillie, Niall McGinn and Peter Pawlett and the youthful exuberance of Cammy Smith, Joe Shaughnessy and Lawrence Shankland.
Pittodrie Stadium currently holds just over 21,000 people and although the club are continually trying to relocate nothing has been given the go ahead so far.

THE FUTURE
The aim is simple - to overcome Celtic (and the re-emergence of Rangers) to become Scotland's number 1 club. I want to bring back the glory days where once again Aberdeen will be competing for European honours. Added to that I want to manage Scotland and make amends for the past debacles in World Cups and the likes.
SIMPLES!!!!!!!!!!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THE CLUB
Yes you all know I support Newcastle United fanatically and that I have a never ending love affair with a regen player from 2 years ago (long live Aitor Herrera!!!!) and you probably know that I am from Aberdeenshire and that they are my local professional team.
I first went to games in 1993 when I was 12y/o and they won 7-0 against Airdrie the 2nd time I went!!! I was already supporting Newcastle by that stage but my mum took me to see the Dons as I was a football fanatic.
I got my first ever season ticket the season they almost got relegated in the mid 90s, and my 2nd (and last) when Skovdahl took over and we finished bottom for the first time so I am a bad luck omen. I missed the league cup winning final in 1995 so thats probably why we won and I have been to several semis where I have never seen them win!! From the mid 90s I pretty much stopped going to home games and just went to the away ones and by the turn of the century I pretty much stopped going altogether!!! (I think I have been maybe 6 times this century - I go to see Newcastle more).
Despite my non appearance at the games I was a regular contributor to a club fanzine (my pal who was a co-editor is now a football journalist for the BBC and runs this website dedicated to Scottish football - The Away End) -
https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=opera&q=the+away+end&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
and I always watch them on TV and look out for their score when I am glued at Soccer Saturday. It seems I have failed to convince my soon to be 7y/o daughter to support Newcastle as every time she see's football on the tv she asks which one is Aberdeen so maybe I will be going back more often in the future...................

(I am using an updated database where I have tried to keep up to date with whats happening in the football world. Zeki Ismail is about to sign on loan for the Dons so I have added him into the side. I may end up streaming this save if i can get my OBS to work and Stonecold and I are also considering starting up an online save which you will probably get told about!!! lol)
