Uruguay Announce New Gaffer

Today the Uruguayan FA have announced that rookie manager Antonio Di Lorenzo will take over the reigns in an attempt to help Uruguay qualify for the 2010 World cup in South Africa. Lorenzo, 30, is an Italian with an Argentinean Mother so speaks the Urugayan natioanl language of Spanish. With no previous experiance though, Lorenzo is seen by many fans as a huge risk with such high stakes now going on for Uruguay to qualify.

Lorenzo though hasnt taken long to make change. He has replaced current captain Diego Lugano of Fernabache with Uruguay's best player, At.Madrid's Diego Forlan. Forlan is one of the hottest scoring strikers in World football and Lorenzo is hoping he can take it onto the International stage. Along with Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Uruguay boast an impressive attacking trio, but are they enough to guide Uruguay to South Africa?

Forlan announced that it was a true honour to be appointed captain of his country. And Diego Lugano publicly announced that he is more than happy to be announced Vice-captain and be part of the Uruguayan set up.

Diego Forlan - Luis Suarez - Edinson Cavani

Algeria vs Uruguay
Lorenzo's first game as a manager and National coach. 2 time World Champions Uruguay looking to win the friendly in order to try and build positive mentality for his upcoming World Cup Qualification Matches.

Here was his announced Squad list for the game ;
Palermo striker Edinson Cavani is in line to make his International Debut under Lorenzo, though it wouldn't have been long before he did with Lorenzo at the helm or not.

The Formation on the day ;

As you can see, Lorenzo has lined up with a 4-1-2-3 formation. With Suarez, Cavani and Forlan up top, Lorenzo really has some impressive firepower. Can they work together as a 3 though? Time will tell.

Great performance from the team. Lorenzo makes a very bright start in his first game in charge. A terrific brace from defender Diego Lugano earns Uruguay a 4-1 victory. Napoli's Walter Gargano also on the scoresheet as well as an OG from Algeria. Hamer Bouazza had made things interesting with an equaliser on the 18th minute and it remained level until the last 10 minutes when the Uruguayans simply just over-powered the tired Algerians.

Lorenzo now has a month to look over the progress of players for the upcoming games against Peru (away) and Colombia (home). Both games vitally important in order for Uruguy to qualify.

Looking forward to this, good luck! ^_^

Good luck and a good start. I managed Uruguay at the 2014 world cup on an old save, but went out at the last sixteen. They have some good players and normally get some good youth players coming through as well.

Lorenzo now had 4 games to try and get Uruguay on a plane to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. With games against Peru, Colombia, Eduador and Argentina there is a lot to do for the team who are sitting 6th, one place of the place-off position.

Peru vs Uruguay

A bore draw and not what Lorenzo needed for his team. His team slump to an away defeat in a game they so badly needed to win. Still sitting in 6th, Qualification can still be achieved, but is it really possible?

To be fair, we played some nice football. Yeh at the end of the day we didn't win, but we managed to pick up a point. Mr. Lorenzo also added this and we were glad that he noticed this. We now move on and look forward to the Colombia game and try to achieve the 3 points in-front of our home fans. The lads have only 3 games left to show that we have the quality to play in South Africa. Thanks Guys.

Uruguay vs Colombia

Lorenzo's side pick up a vital 3 points in the Qualification race. Luis Suarez nets the goal that wins the game. Fans and players are delighted with this result.

We needed this today. Its a great win for us. I'm delighted with the way in which we won the game as at times we played some great football and look rather dangerous when it to set pieces. As for Luis, he was top class. His goal was one that we will all remember if this win inspires qualification. No keeper would have saved that kind of shot, absoloute rocket. Once again, Thanks.

Ecuador vs Uruguay

A great win for Uruguay. Confidence is flowing from the side and they now look fully on course to pick up the Qualification place. Sitting 5th now with one game left to play and Colombia playing away to Paraguay, things look to be secure for Uruguay, but they cant take anything for granted at this late stage.

Uruguay vs Argentina

A defeat for Uruguay, but, not to worry, Uruguay make it into the Play-off Stage! They draw Honduras for a place in South Africa and the oppourtunity to play at the Fifa World Cup for 2010.

Honduras vs Uruguay

Lorenzo has helped his team slump to an embarresing defeat. Uruguay just didnt turn up today as they are beaten by Honduras.They now have alot to do in order to make it up in the home leg. If they fail to qualify now, it would be devastating to the Uruguayan people.

Uruguay vs Honduras

A massive game. All that needs to be said.

Suarez and Chevanton put Uruguay 2-0 up.

Godin gets a straight red.

Hendry Thomas scores on then 56th minute.

Chevanton scores a penalty on the 75th minute.

If it stayed like this then it would be going to extra time..

Step up Diego Forlan..

82nd minute and Captain Diego Forlan rattles in a freekick from 30 yards.

And thats how it ends.

Uruguay qualify for the 2010 World Cup!

Uruguayan fans are delighted with this achievement as you can see in the pictures above. Can they now go on and impress in the World Cup?

I am delighted! One of the greatest goals I've scored in my career and what a time to score it! If you dont mind, I'd like to go celebrate with the lads, Thanks!

well done! I think your updates are really well setup to. You could win that group which would give you a chance to go far. (:

And thanks mate :)

Good luck in your group :) look forward to next update

With the World Cup fast approuching for Lorenzo and Uruguay they arranged 2 games for preperaion. The first against Luxemburg and the second coming against the USA. Both games Lorenzo is said to be experimenting with a 4-4-2 instead of the usual 4-1-2-3 in which he used during Qualification. Time will tell which shall be more effective.

Luxemburg vs Uruguay

Fans viewed this as an easy game, a game in which Lorenzo could freely experiment. His announced squad was as followed ;

With the squad now announced the Uruguayans had to gather and prepare for their first Pre-World Cup game. Uruguay keen to impress in Europe to show that they arn't just there to make up the numbers are their seeding of 4th would emply.

The Formation ;

The notable change in formation was what the fans noticed. An unknown 4-4-2, with the side becoming so used to playing the 4-1-2-3 that Lorenzo had first started with. Forlan and Suarez undoubtly the most talented players in the squad.

The Final Reult

Walter Gargano impresses and nets twice in a comfertable victory for the Uruguayans. A good display in the 4-4-2 formation, but is it for Uruguay or will they switch back to the 4-1-2-3?

Uruguay vs USA

A tricky game no doubt. Lorenzo again wanted to try out a 4-4-2 and based his team selection on the oppourtunity to do so.

Here it is as followed ;

no Diego Lugano, who is now in a rush to be fit for the World Cup. Not Perriara of Porto at left back and Fucile of Porto at right back who are both, also injured. The biggest injury is though Carlos Diogo of Zaragoza who plays at right back. He ruptured his cruciate ligaments and will be out for 8-10 months. A shame on the lad who Lorenzo said WOULD have made the World Cup squad.

The Formation ;

Again, the 4-4-2. Forlan and Suarez both looking to lead the line and try and tricker some chances against the USA defence. The USA are no pushovers though and include some quality players. They have the likes of Landon Donovan, who is destined to make his 124 cap, a great achievement for the man. Also they have Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Watford's Jay DeMerit.

The Final Result

A last gasp winner from Edinson Cavani in the 89th minute, set up Luis Suarez. Uruguay tonight show some real class in their passing and their movement and certainly showed the USA that they are a team to be reckoned with.

Cavani and Suarez celebrate their late Goal together.

After the game Cavani had this to say ;

I'm delighted, I really am! I came on as the substitute for Diego, and I felt I had a positive impact on the game. Luis' ball was great and I had to keep my composure. I tried to anticipate the keeper and which way he would dive. In the end he thought I was going across goal and I simply knocked it past him at the near post. I now have to keep working hard and hopefully push for a place in the first team. Just look forward to South Africa and the World Cup Occasion! Thanks Guys.

Uruguay have now announced their 23 man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

It looks as follows ;

- - - - - -

As you can see, no Diego Lugano or Walter Gargano. Lorenzo commented that both players were never going to be ready for the World Cup as much as it pains him to say. Uruguay bring Diego Forlan, Jorge Fucile, Luis Suarez, Nicolas Loderio, Edinson Cavani, Juan Albin to name a few.

- - - - - -

Diego Forlan has this to say on Pre-World Cup events ;

Obviously we know that we are considered heavy outsiders for this tournament. But the team are very confident that we can put a good account for ourselves at this years World Cup. We have a great bunch of lads who are very determined to play for each and for their country. We want to prove all the doubters wrong.

Forlan netted 25 goals in a prolific season in the league as his At.Madrid team finished 2nd in La Liga, can he bring that to the World Cup?
