AI teams relegated, prices on their players increases!

So, I'm managing in Norway and IK Start got relegated after the 1st season. I won the league and wanted to buy K. Ajer.
I figured since his team got relegated his value might decrease and his team feel the need to sell him cheaper as their revenues would be less after relegation.

Before the league tables were updated and his team had 30 matches and last place in the league his price were around 350k,
so I figured I'd wait until the league tables were updated and his team had 0 matches in the division below,
BUT to my surprise they demanded over 500k for him then!

His value was exactly the same (44k).

Isn't that weird? Didn't it use to be the opposite in prev versions of FM?

Sounds about right, they will be less likely to want to sell him, now they need him more.

They are essentially quoting you a '**** off' price to get you to give up.

OK I kinda figured it would be something like that since he is young and talented.

But their high earners older players, would they be cheaper to buy after the relegation is "updated" along with the league tables
or doesnt it matter whether I buy them right after the season is complete and the relegation is a fact?

Depends if the club wanna sell and if they are in a position too. You can try and unsettle him, as you have a better standing in the league and country. he may kick up a fuss and drive the transfer himself.

unsettling players doesnt seem to work for me on FM15, I mean, they get unsettled and has rows with the managers and wants a transfer but prices doesnt change and the manager just becomes unfriendly towards me.

I guess what I'm asking is if you have seen a pattern in regards to player prices before or after the league tables are updated?
When is the best time to try and buy players from relegated teams?

I am also a bit scared foreign teams will pick up Ajer if I drag it out too long so I think I'll just have to buckle down and pay the 500k now as I have the money for it.
Just annoying that I could've saved 150k just buying him a couple days earlier (before league tables were updated)
