Deportivo Alavés, S.A.D., usually abbreviated to Alavés, is a Spanish football club based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the Basque Country. Founded in 1921, it currently plays it's home matches at the 19,500-seater Estadio Mendizorrotza.

Today the former UEFA Cup finalists have appointed former little known Semi-Pro footballer Jose Luis as manager for the 2009/10 season.

The Spanish club have been through hard times in recent years reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2001 before losing to an extra time goal to Liverpool. 2 years later, Alaves were relegated to the 2nd Division and spending 2 years there before being promoted again in 2005 before being immediately relegated again. From there things only got worse for Alaves and in 2009 they foud themselves relegated to the 3rd tier of Spanish football. Things had to change and the board have decided now to bring in Luis with the hope that he can get the club heading back in the right direction. A direction that the club were once moving in before their recent plummet.

Luis is not without his hardships as the club have given him no money to spend at all. In such financial difficulties Luis will have to work hard if he is to improve the squad and put Alaves back on the Spanish and indeed European footballing map.

A foray into the free transfer market saw new Alaves manager Jose Luis unearth a couple of hidden gems.

Former Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna striker Santiago Ezquerro was brought in followed by former Real Madrid defender Ivan Campo. The ink on their contracts was barely dry when former Sociedad striker Mikel Arruabarrena was also brought in for free. Finally young French-Algerian Djaid Kasri and Brazilian Leandro Zanoni were also added to bolster Alaves' push back up the divisions.

good luck with this man...managed to get some good players :)

With pre-season now over and a Spanish Cup tie looming, the rookie Alaves boss reflected on what was a decent pre-season for his 3rd Division challengers.

Alaves 1 v 0 Cottbus
A good win for Alaves against the German 2nd Division side. A first half goal coming from left winger Oscar Rico

Alaves 3 v 1 Almeria
The highlight of Jose Luis' pre-season was undoubtedly this win over top flite side Almeria. a quite brilliant performance irrespective of the fact it was a friendly. Ezquerro grabbing his first two goals for Los Babazorros

Alaves 0 v 1 Sampdoria
The Serie A side proved too strong in this encounter resulting in a first defeat for Luis. Bellucci's 84th minute winner disguising what was otherwise a good performance from Alaves.

Luis's next match will be against Amateur side Lagun Onak in the Spanish Cup 1st round. Despite the advantage that Alaves will hold over their opponents, the manager will be trying to make sure that complancency does not creep into their games and that they carry on their form from the recent friendly matches.

Apologies for a lack of updates, it is the holidays after all :D

Should have some more stuff to post up soon

Jose Luis and his Alaves side headed into the start of the season with confidence high after a good run of friendly results. The team would first face Amateur side Lagun Onak in the first round of the Spanish Cup before beginning league duties.

Alaves 5 - 0 Lagu Onak
Alaves taught Amateur side Lagun a thorough lesson today. a hattrick from young striker Igor doing most of the damage as Jose Luis' men ran riot from start to finish.

Another dominating performance from Alaves and it looks like Luis has got them on the right track straight away. 2 goals from Igor and a third from experienced frontman Santiago Ezquerro.

Alaves 3 - 0 Gramanet
The Spanish Cup 2nd round brought the visit of fellow 3rd division side Gramanet. Again though Alaves eased through as Diego Segura, Oscar Rico and Romerito put the away side out of their misery.
