Hi All,

Just thought id update you on my first season in charge of Alfreton in the BSP. I took charge with the clubs financial situation under threat with the ongoing saga with the sale of the club. My preseason was very good I won all my games against similar standard clubs.

The target was to avoid relegation after promotion the season before. The club had brough in a number of players that had experienc in the BSP however as the usual case, I wanted to put my own stamp on it. I brought in no fewer than 8 players. Some I have to say didnt materialise into anything near what I had expected. My frontline completely changed and I went from having a weak looking attack to a very powerful forward line. I brought in Pablo Counago on a free his wages are high £850 against the average £250 but worth every single penny. As well as Enzo Scorza, who isnt a fanatasitc playmaker. He doesnt score enough as his finishing is low having said that if you play him alongside a finisher goos things will happen.

The back had a reshaping to moving alot of the exisitng platers into the reserve team as they were looking for new clubs and bringing in some young fresh faces including. Diaz and O.Nicholas. These 2 together are formidable, young and quick.

The place I saw needing the most changes was the midfield we lacked guile and determination so I brought in a number of foreign players at first on trial after realising how good they were I brought them in on the a part-time contract. Most of the signings had realitvely little competition. Mauriello, Tissone, Cronesberry, Y.Ekra, Pieroni, Cerivini these are really good players for the bsp and some look hot prospects for the future.

Lastly was the goalkeeper I brought in 2 new keepers Scottish Gilpin and a French keeper Ginan both very good young keepers.

The season started brilliantly adopting my 3-5-2 formation we went at a York City side vying for Promotion and came out on top. The start of the seaon brought great reward with Counago starting off on fire he scored 5 against Ebsfleet in an 8-2 romping. The first manager of the month award came for me in the 3rd month with 5wins and just the one loss although it was a poor one at home to Lincoln.

Halfway through the season and as all managers encounter in the lead up to christmas the blip happened at this point were 3rd behind Stocport and York, and I had Scorza with 11 goals and 17 assists out for 3months. :( panic..... at first yes, with a number of 0-0 to follow and Reilly (another stircker not finsing the net I was starting to fear the worst) but then as the transfer window duly arrived I dived in and took Zkhouna (ill check this one) What a signing he would prove to be.

I managed to level the books somewhat getting rid of a few players at the same time as fighting people off Counago, Scorza and Diaz. During this period with a bashed up team York came to Alfreton all guns blazing after scoring freely but we shut up shop well and got a vital point in a 1-1 draw.

January - March and Alfreton were to this point going well far beyond the expectations of the board who had finally just sold up and the new man had kept me on. Now I needed to prove my worth and at least secure a playoff berth. The fans were ecstatic with what they had seen so far but nothing prepared them for what happened next.

After stuttering to a 0-3 home loss with too much tactical tinkering we had dropped to 6th. Enter Zakhouna, in his first 6 games he had 8 goals. We went on a run that closed the gap from 10 points from York and Stockport down to 4. With 5 games left the gap was futher reduced as a draw for York and a win for Alfreton brought the gap to 3 points. The game in hand was frustratingly a draw at home once more so 4 to play 2 points difference Scorza had returned but Counago was out for a wihle. Reilly had produced some good performances but it was the goals from the midfield that were really helping. Cervini and Mauriello were superb!

So going into the last 4 games now the gap 2 point now a run of wins consisting of 3 4 goal hauls the team were in excellent form and this wasnt going unnoticed by the surrounding leagues who were chasing my star men.

York then inexplicably drew and Alfreton won we were now level on point 2 games to go but we had a superior goals difference by over 10 and everyone who nows football GD is worth a point come the end of the season! "dont quote me on this one".

2 Games then and all we needed to do was match Yorks results the playoffs teams were finalised and I really didnt want to go into the lottery. Having watch Nottingham Forest for a number of years faulter at this hurdle after good campaigns I didnt want to follow suite. Counago/ Scorza and Zhakouna were all playing well but the midfielders needed some rest after so many games.

Game 45: Was a home win against Lincoln pretty easy goals all over the park in this one.

One game left level on points it feels like do or die time. The team have been given 2 days training rest in order to make sure they are ready. The next decision who to play up front and what formation to take going into an away game at a Forest Green side that were lingering around the playoffs but effectively playing for nothing.

STAY TUNED to see if Alfreton can pull off a memorable season.
