Arsene Wenger retires as manager of Arsenal

image.axd

Arsene Wenger has quit Arsenal, it has been announced. He felt, at 61, it was time to call it a day to spend more time with his wife.

In his time at the club, he's lead his team to 11 trophies, and developing an invincible team in the 2003-04 season. His management also was a factor in making players like Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robin Van Persie so successful.

Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola is expected to be in the running, but owner Peter Hill-Wood is looking for something different reportedly, with former Arsenal youth, David Henry, 41, who retired very early due to injury, in the running after being a successful scout for many years.

Sky Sources: David Henry to be interviewed for vacant Arsenal job

Arsenal scout David Henry, aged 41, is set to be interviewed for the Arsenal manager's job.

The rookie, who was an Arsenal youth, focused on his coaching career after retiring, but had only been a scout so far, and is looking for something bigger.

He is said to be ''really hot on young talents'' but the Arsenal fans aren't too keen, calling for Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, 40, but the Arsenal board think that their surprise target will be a ''hit with the fans'' and have branded him ''the English Wenger''.

David Henry is the new manager of Arsenal

David Henry is the new manager of Arsenal, the club have confirmed.

The rookie, 41, had been a scout at the club since 2002, and is said to be relishing the opportunity of taking the club forward.

He is set to shake up the squad to give the team ''much needed fresh players''.

The fans are said to be really unhappy, and are upset that the board didn't try harder to get Pep Guardiola from Barcelona.

Introduction to the Manager's Style

So here I am- the new Arsenal manager! I know people have doubted me but my career so far has been good- I was a bright Arsenal youth talent, playing two professional friendlies until my career ended at 18 before people started to get to know me due to a long-term knee problem. I decided to transfer to management, impressing by managing local teams and working on my coaching badge. I knew Peter, David and Arsene well, and they knew my talents, so I got a role as a scout. I applied for some League 1 and League 2 manager jobs, but there was no success. But Peter Hill-Wood recently offered me the job when Arsene retired and I hope to make an impact on the team's development and of course, trophies!

Now, onto the big stuff. We've got a good squad, but I feel that the youngsters need more of a chance as the experienced players aren't always doing the job. Below, I will do an assessment for each of the positions, highlighting strengths and weaknesses.

Goalkeepers:

Now, I love Wojciech Szczęsny. An example of a player who has come up through the ranks at the club, and he broke into the first-team last season. However, I'd like the goalkeepers overall to be better. Lukasz Fabianski is OK but not great: not by my standards anyway, and Manuel Almunia is good, but he's not getting any younger. I think Tim Krul, currently at Newcastle, would be great for us, as him and Szczęsny can fight for a place and it will certainly make it interesting in training!

Defenders:

As for right-backs, we've got Sagna and Coquelin; of course Bacary will be the main one who plays, but I'll give Francis a chance as I think he can be great in that position. Craig Eastmond and Carl Jenkinsons are young talents in that position.

Moving on to centre-backs, we've got Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squallici as our main players in that position, with Alex Song able to play there as well, and Ignasi Miquel is one for the future. I intend to alternate between Thomas and Laurent, with Per having a regular starting role.

On the left of defence, Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs will battle it out of course, but I'd like Kieran to have a regular starting place, so he wins that for me.

Midfielders:

Alex Song will be our defensive midfielder.

On the right of midfield and on the right of the attacking midfield positions, we've got Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Gervinho, Tomas Rosicky, Yossi Benayoun and Theo Walcott, with Jack and Theo the first choice players, and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain is one for the future. Robin Van Persie can also play there, but he's a striker in my eyes.

On the centre of midfield, there's Aaron Ramsey, Abou Diaby plus many of the above right midfielders. I'd like to give Aaron a chance in that position, to continue his development.

On the left, I think Gervinho is my favourite.

Strikers:

RVP will be our main striker. Chamakh isn't really in my plans, and Park is a back-up.

That's all for now, check back for another update soon!

Feedback appreciated, currently in August and I will post an update once including transfers and screenshots once I've finished the month.

Pre-Season Games

Pat Rice, my assistant, took control of the Pre-Season games as I believe that those games are of no importance and that I don't need to attend. They won all of their games.

In:

Lukas Podolski: I will use him as a winger as he's certainly got a lot of speed to beat defenders down the flanks.

Wilfried Zaha: Brilliant talent, didn't score as much as he would have liked last season for Crystal Palace, but there's more to his game than that, he's got loads of speed and confidence and he can be an Arsenal legend.

Willian: Willian wanted to leave Shakthar to move to a bigger club, and I took advantage of this. He's a great attacking midfield player, and he has loads of talent- he scores lots of goals and is an all round great player in my opinion.

Joe Allen: The most controversial signing: I signed him to link up with Aaron Ramsey and they could be a great pairing, they work well together and Joe's passing is a joy to behold, so he will fit in brilliantly here.

Out:

Marouane Chamakh- Not in my plans really- wasn't brilliant last season and is too average as we're not like that, we think big, but unfortunately, he's not.

Bacary Sagna: Man City were after him all Summer and I rejected loads of bids, but I finally gave in. It's a big loss but we're not signing a replacement: Francis Coquelin will take his role. However, if he doesn't perform well, I may think about a new right-back in January.

That's all for now, August update tomorrow!

Game No. 1, Premier League

Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

Thoughts from the Manager:
What a brilliant win for us! We weren't always the best side but the players showed hunger to help overcome our fierce rivals. Brilliant brace from Gervinho, and I'm very pleased for Willian, getting a goal on his debut. Also, it may well be Bacary's last game for the club, so he definitely went out on a high. Bring on the Panathinaikos game!

Thoughts from the Manager:
Great performance from the first leg! Built up a huge advantage, and I'm very impressed at how well my new signings did. When RVP unfortunately came off injured, Wilfried Zaha came on and made brilliant runs to assist some goals. Absolutely brilliant display, and hopefully we'll show this form against Bolton on Saturday!

Panathinaikos 1-1 Arsenal

Thoughts from the Manager:
The game was much, much closer than the first leg. They were the better side for most of the match, but we managed to get an equaliser which was unimportant really, as we were always going to go through. Let's hope we don't get a difficult group stage draw.

Thoughts from the Manager: The group stage draw isn't too difficult- the hardest game is against Leverkusen, but even that isn't that difficult. I personally think that we couldn't have been given an easier draw!

Is anyone following this, because there's no point in doing it if you're not.

Please give some feedback, any is welcomed. I will be happy to post any screenshots (Except the league table, as I'm at the end of August, and it would spoil a result). But as far as players are concerned, absolutely.

i like it :) You might need another right back and defensive midfielder though, i reccomend sime vrjasko (sp)

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Thoughts from the Manager: To be frank, it wasn't a classic derby. Very close and to be honest, boring. Tottenham made the breakthrough through Emmanuel Adebayor, but 4 minutes later, Lukas Podolski made a great run down the wing, and Willian volleyed into the back of the net. We're missing RVP badly.

Thanks, I'll wait until January (in the game) to think about that, as I want to see how Francis Coquelin develops. (It's always nice to see Arsenal youth players develop at the club.)

Review of the Month

An unbeaten start to my career, we're in the Champions League group stages and we're 7th in the Premier League. 7th isn't bad, but we're aiming for a Champions League place! It's early days though. I think when RVP returns, we'll get better.

I've been impressed by our new signings, particularly Lukas Podolski and Willian. They're showing great attacking awareness, and bagging us lots of goals. However, we're disappointed at losing Bacary Sagna, but I'm looking forward to Francis Coquelin's development in that position.

The League Cup draw is at home to Manchester United, very difficult, though we've shown we can actually beat them!

Not important, but Gervinho's goal against Man U on the first day came third in the Goal of The Month competition.
