my players all seem to have this comment under their 'Reports' - 'Match Performance' tab, does anyone know why this is?

Did You start with à low reputation ?,, then this is why.

Yes, i have played about 6 more games and the comment now says they struggle to be motivated playing for a manager with such a low reputation in the game. I set my reputation to automatic, and apparently I have a 'National' reputation, i am managing Ajax - maybe they expect better?

Yes, thats it. National gives you a slightly too low rep for playing with a club( or players from a club) like Ajax.
