Hi

I have a weird situation and FM is really trying to disappoint me. I am leading Newcastle and I'm doing fine (5th place), real Newcastle would have envied me. But I teased the Board about the budget and they gave me an ultimatum - score 9 points in next 5 games. It was a ridiculous ultimatum - fixtures with ManU, Chelsea and Man City upcoming.

Now I need to to score 3 points with ManU or else I get sacked. It's ridiculous - I'm 5th in the league! But this game proves to be unwinnable - I have replayed it 15-20 times. I ALWAYS lose, I don't even draw.

My question is - are there unwinnable games? Will I ever win? I don't want to lose my Newcastle. They sack me each time I lose. Is the game set to me losing?

Surely, by the process of you having a squad good enough to be in 5th and thanks to random odds, you should win eventually? I'm not all for quitting -> restarting your game, but I'm sure if you replay it enough, it should work?

You could alter your tactics - look for Man United's weaknesses and try to exploit them.

Out of interest, what odds does the match preview give you for winning before you start?

If the game is being played on Old Trafford, you will need a lot of loads. I never won there in FM2014.

Having beaten teams on first try when the odds are against me 24:1 and 50:1, I can safely say it all comes down to tactics and paying attention to any changes the AI makes (substitution, formation changes). When the odds are against you, either use an "all-in" style tactic overload/attacking, high d-line, and use offside trap to try and outscore your opponent. Alternatively, if you know your team has good passing and pace, use a counter strategy with a large midfield presence (like a 4-5-1)

It all depends on tactics, team selection, morale and even your pre-match press conference and team talk then whatever else goes on in the game selection. If you keep making little tweaks you should get a win eventually.

Here's a tip, go on holiday with a return date the one right after the game. Leave team selection and tactics in the hands of your assistant. You'll have a better chance of grinding out a result.

Provided your assistant has decent stats for 'tactical'

Letting your assistant manage that game wouldn't be a good idea. I have Mauro Tassoti, highest tactical attribute for any Ast. Manager in the game (19) and he failed to win for every game I've tried him.

Whenever I start a bad run, I start playing defensive football, grinding out results even if they're draws. Harsh team meetings can help morale.

No, I've won against terrible match odds before (1:24, 1:17, etc). It all comes down to formation, tactics, team morale, opposition instructions, and a little bit of luck

And like Chelsea vs Arsenal match taught us yesterday, you never play high line in away games against strong teams.

Just caused another upset ;) One of the things I like to do is be extremely flexible with my formations and tactics and try to counter my opponent's formation. You will rarely have perfectly trained tactics if you do this, but if you start the season with 3 different formations & train them, then any adjustments will only drop from "fluid" down to "competent" or "accomplished" in a couple of categories which is still good enough.

Here's an example: I see that Toulouse FC (favorites) are using a 5-3-2, so I create a 2-3-2-3 to counter it. It worked quite well in this case.

My thoughts: In a defensive situation, my CB's can tightly mark their strikers, and my 3 DMs can deal with their midfield and one of their wingers at any given time. However, whenever I'm on offensive, my 3 DMs can move up to give more passing options (and create a hexagon), wherein I should be dominating possession, which is what happened.

Any team can beat anyone (to a point). I play on a online save and I've just taken Wolves, they have next to no good players at all but in my first game I managed to beat Man U away 1-0 due to tactics and pure luck. It proves if the tactics are there (and lots of luck) there is always a chance. Best just playing around a bit with it all different players/tactics etc.
