Babak Rafati suicide attempt - assistants praised | Mail Online

The president of the German Football Association, Dr Theo Zwanziger, has given the two assistant referees and the fourth official of Saturday's Bundesliga fixture between Cologne and Mainz credit for saving the life of referee Babak Rafati.

Rafati was discovered in his hotel room covered in blood after attempting to commit suicide several hours before the game was due to kick-off.

The game was postponed as Rafati was rushed to hospital, where he is in a stable condition in intensive
care.

Holger Henschel, Frank Willenborg and Patrick Ittrich's quick-thinking was crucial in saving the Hanover-based official's life, according to Dr Zwanziger.

'They have explained everything to me and to the police,' Zwanziger told Sky television in Germany. 'All I can say is compliments to them.

'They took immediate measures and kept their cool.

'It definitely took a lot to stabilise him and to contribute to him being able to remain alive.

'I have got to say that these three have saved his life. When they discovered him, they ensured that he could survive with quick emergency measures.'

It took less than 15 minutes for Rafati's assistants to realise that something was amiss when the normally punctual referee failed to show for a meeting in their hotel two hours before kick-off.

Attempts to call the 41-year-old proved futile while the referee did not respond when they knocked on his hotel door either.

With the aid of a hotel worker, they gained access to Rafati's room, where they were confronted with a horrific discovery in the bath tub.

'Naturally, all three of them are distraught,' added Dr Zwanziger. 'They were sat with him the night before and did not notice anything amiss.

'Only at 13:30, when he did not appear, did they start to worry and they reacted quickly.

'It is certainly a burden for them when a close friend, with whom they have worked together for a long time and officiated over important games, takes such a step.

'I think it still hasn't sunk in. I was pleased that they looked so composed, but I think that will change over the coming days.'

The three officials were provided with psychological care and Dr Zwanziger has promised that the German FA (DFB) will 'provide them with all of the help that the DFB can offer' to come to terms with
the experience.

But he expects them to be strong, given the nature of their job.

'You have got to be very tough to be able to cope with everything in this sport,' he said.

'Of course refereeing has become a very difficult job and there are a lot of demands placed on referees
nowadays.

'It is not so easy to describe when you hear how people who play such an important role in top-level sport suddenly arrive in a situation where they feel there is no way out, which means they see no alternative in life.

'That is quite terrible.'

Although there were boos when the announcement was made at the Mungersdorfer Stadion that the game was called off, the president of the German Football League Dr Reinhard Rauball insists there was no other choice.

'I am deeply shocked and I believe thateverybody connected with the Bundesliga feels the same way,' he said.

'Something like this has never happened before and it has deeply shocked people.

'If there was anything to be learnt from the death of Robert Enke, then it was that football is not everything in life, as Theo Zwanziger said at the time.

'Calling off this game was the right decision, there is no doubt about that.'

Although Rafati was voted the worst referee three times in the last four years in a poll of Bundesliga players conducted by Kicker magazine, he nevertheless earned his place on the FIFA refereeing register in 2008.

And given the reaction of two Bundesliga coaches, he is a well-liked personality.

'It is shocking,' said Hannover coach Mirko Slomka. 'Babak Rafati is a good friend in our club and in our team so we are particularly interested in knowing how he is.'

Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath added: 'Babak Rafati is one of the referees I like the most and I hope that we see him again soon in the Bundesliga.'

He's basically been bullied, there shouldn't be votes, pointing out the worst of anything! It's so demoralising to think that people actually vote you the worst at what you do. Kudos to his colleagues, friends, who practically saved his life. I've not normally got sympathy for people who try to commit suicide and take the easy way out, but there is no doubt that he would have received nasty letters/e-mails, whatever and they will have contributed to his depression.

It's quite disgusting, some people are sure filth in this world. Football is a game - a competitive one, sure - and should always be a game. These sort of things should not happen, it's just stupid. He nearly took his one life, due to a few stupid and ignorant 'fans' of football. Hope he recovers and that this sort of 'bullying', as W4FC B3N put it correctly, will never happen again.

hope he recovers and can maybe referee again. such a shame if its his job that pushed him to try and kill himself :(

i was in small shock to what happen to Enke, but Enke reason to jump of the bridge to teh train wasn't about being bullied, but was of personal family matters (mainly about his daughters sudden death (or son, not sure )

Or a combination. Imagine that on top of the abuse he was getting. ******* disgusting tbh. Some people on this planet just defy belief.

Sorry but that is a little short sighted. Suicide is a complex thing, far from always being an easy way out. Every attempt is unique, and to actively try to kill yourself goes against every consicious and subconcisous thought of human survival. Very unfair to judge someone on that when you have no idea of their state of mind and what they have been through

Wow. Was mentioning how much pressure refs were under on a different thread, but when you get a poll for the worst refs, as voted for by players....absolutely shocking. Yeah we may shout and swear at a ref at times, but majority of the time it is an honest decision. But what baffles me, is letting players vote on this pole. Especially when simulation is running rife-a player dives to get a free kick/pen, doesn't get it then kicks off at the ref. What if one of those players on this pole did that (stressing what if btw), pretty much playing a part of intensifying the pressure and driving him over the edge? Absolutely unneccessary and imo disgusting to have such a thing.

If I was him, I'd just take a break, get sorted out, and never ref again. It's simply not worth it. Life is far more important than football, regardless of whatever anybody says.

this. just wonder about what u said. if the ref is in such tense, and teh player keep bullshiting him, why dont he ref say '**** U' :)

and i remember posting somthing similar to this situation, but it ws young players kicking the ref to death and mercy.

The abuse referees get is always interesting, when they make a decision that I'm not happy with, I just get on with it because I know I won't achieve anything by arguing or giving him abuse. Plenty of people on my team react very badly to referee decision though, I just finding all a bit melodramatic and often amusing but maybe I just don't take my football seriously enough.

Very sad what this abuse had led too though, sometimes people just need to take a look at themselves, the stuff you hear at football matches from fans directed at the ref is terrible.

Mention earlier about refs being 'bullied' here are some ...

La Liga - Match abandoned as linesman hit by brolly - Yahoo! Eurosport

Happened last Sunday, November 20.

The Liga match between Granada and Mallorca was abandoned after a linesman was struck by an object thrown from the crowd.

Granada were leading 2-1 with just under half an hour left in the clash at Nuevo Los Cármenes when referees assistant Clos Gomez was struck by what appeared to be an umbrella.
With blood pouring from Gomez's face, the referee and both his assistants immediately headed for the tunnel.
Both sets of players soon followed them off the pitch soon after as the game was abandoned, and a fan was apparently apprehended by authorities in the stands.
