I am finally going to give this save a proper crack on FM15. After my successful (but somewhat easy) Aberdeen save I have decided to go to my spiritual FM home and do a Bilbao save. I wont bother doing a club history etc as everyone who has read my previous Bilbao stories will be well versed on all things Bilbao.

That being said I should say to anyone new that as Bilbao manager I can only sign players with Basque nationality (or Spaniards aged 16 or under) and that in a previous save I had a half decent regen and the main, less than hidden agenda is to find the heir to his throne lol - AITOR HERRERA IS GOD!!!!

I am using sortitoutsi's updated database so it is fairly up to date.

PRE-SEASON

This pre-season was incredibly dull as I had little money to spend and none of the decent Basque players were interested anyway so I didnt sign anyone. One player was sold though as I got rid of my captain Carlos Gurpegi to Granada for $325,000.

In the Champions League qualifier we will come up against Napoli (who Bilbao beat in real life) so that will be a tricky tie to navigate.

So instead of my usual pre-season update I will do a squad review.............

GOALKEEPERS

Gorka Iraizoz - Iago Herrerin

Iraizoz will be first choice but Herrerin is a decent keeper also and may force the veteran out. Goalkeeper is one of the two toughest positions to get long term when you are manager of Bilbao.

DEFENDERS

Jon Aurtenetxe - Aymeric Laporte - Mikel San Jose - Unai Bustinza - Andoni Iraola - Xabier Etxeita - Mikel Balenziaga

We are a bit short in defence truth be told. The standout player is Aymeric Laporte who is one of Europe's best young defenders. San Jose will partner him at the back while Balenziaga and my captain, Iraola, will be my full backs.

MIDFIELDERS

Benat - Ander Iturraspe - Oscar De Marcos - Ibai Gomez - Markel Susaeta - Mikel Rico - Iker Muniain - Ager Aketxe - Unai Lopez

This is the area where we are strongest without a doubt. Muniain is one of the best young players in Europe and will start this season as my AMC. Benat and Iturraspe are quality CMs while Susaeta and Ibai Gomez are tricky wide players. Oscar De Marcos can just about play anywhere while Unai Lopez is the top prospect at the club while Aketxe is in my B team.

FORWARDS

Gaizka Toquero - Kike Sola - Aritz Aduriz - Borja Viguera - Guillermo

This is the other position that is tough to fill in the long term. Aduriz will be the chosen one this season but I have high hopes for Guillermo also.

IN THE CANTERA SYSTEM

Xiker - Asier Villalibre

The cantera system or policy is where you rear your homegrown players to get into the first team. I have picked out the central defender Xiker and the striker Villalibre as hot prospects for the future and I will try and give them some game time.

The expectations of the board are for us to not only get to the group stage but to qualify for the first knockout stage and this win gets us off to a decent start although I would still put down Napoli as favourites to go through as they got the crucial away goal.

What a fantastic result this is. Once again I was missing several players but we battled away and the game changing moment came when they had Inler sent-off on 70min and we took advantage to score twice. I was delighted that 16y/o Villalibre marked his debut with a goal.

SUMMARY

Our first month of the season went pretty well. We kicked off the league campaign with a high scoring draw away to Malaga before thumping Levante at home. However it was our exploits in the Champions League that mattered and we managed to defeat Napoli home and away.

In the Champions League group stage we have been drawn alongside Juventus, Schalke 04 and Dinamo.

Regarding the transfer window - nobody came in but a couple oyf youngsters left on loan.

SUMMARY

This month was pretty decent as we got a few good victories in the league and defeated Schalke 04 in the Champions League. On the other side of the coin we lost out to Barcelona and Juventus.

I havent been able to put out a settled side yet though due to injuries mainly and also a lack of form from my strikers. If that continues we may be in for a tough first season.

SUMMARY

Another strong month was had here as we won all of our games apart from one in which we lost heavily to Real Madrid - which is understandable.

One thing that is readily apparent is that while we have no trouble scoring goals (2nd highest in the league) we are conceding far too many (3rd worst defence). We are currently sitting in 4th place in the table which is a decent position but we must stop conceding so many goals or we may slip a little.

It is good to see this back. I usually do a file with Bilbao myself and I had some real success with Susaeta on the right wing. He finished top goalscorer in the league for the first 2 years before Real Madrid met his buyout clause and left for around 35mil. I didn't desperately need the money so I was slightly gutted to lose him but I was able to bring in Griezmann to replace him which was a great signing.

This match got off to a crazy start with 3 goals in the first 7min and we got a point thanks to Kike Sola's goal.

I played a few of my backups here and they did brilliantly. Guillermo fired in a hat-trick to put him into contention to start in the league while Unai Lopez was pulling the strings in midfield.

I have no complaints with this result as we were awful and although the late winner hurt it was no more than we deserved. Iturraspe got injured before the game and will be out for 6-7 weeks.

This was one of those games where everything went our way. We were 6 up at half time after some wonderful play. Even when they pulled a goal back late on it got disallowed!

This win secures our qualification into the next round and if we avoid defeat against Juventus we will win the group. Schalke had an early effort disallowed and we took advantage of that.

SUMMARY

This month started off poorly as we dropped points to Sevilla before losing out to Valencia but we then kicked off and thanks to Benat and Sola we destroyed Espanyol 7-0, defeated Schalke to qualify in the Champions League and get a decent win over Getafe too.

We are currently 3rd in the table with Real Madrid breathing down our necks and while it would be great to overtake them I am more concerned about catching Real Sociedad who have made a great start to the season.

Wonderful to see youre Bilbao save again! I was inspired by youre previous stories, and have been playing with Bilbao myself. The young goalkeeper in youre squad will develop nice if you play him a bit. Unai Lopez could become one of the best spanish midfielders. After my first season he is my startman over sauseata on the right wing.
