Ok, I am a novice American who doesn't know an inside forward from a wingback, but I've been reading forums, blogs and such and have picked up alot here and there. I have played 4 seasons as Everton (finished 5th last season!) but one thing I have completely ignored are attributes. I have read the past several hours trying to figure out what positions need which attributes and I'm probably more confused than I was when I started. There are sites after sites that include great information but each site is a little different. And another problem is things like there are inside forwards, deep-lying forwards, advanced forwards, target men, poachers. complete forwards and defensive forwards. Argh!

What I have tried to do is figure out what positions need what key attributes, what secondary attributes and then what other attributes would be needed when playing attacking, support, defensive whatever. Because right now I'm just putting players into random roles. I put Tim Cahill as a CM - attacking not because I think he is but because he is natural at ACM.

Anyways, I figured I'd put my work down here and hopefully someone can correct, add, comment, whatever so that I can get my head around this.

One thing I have noticed is that almost every position need the mental attributes. And really almost every position needs almost every attribute.

GOALKEEPER
Key: Aerial Ability, Command of Area, Handling, Reflexes, Positioning, Agility, Jumping
Secondary: Communication, One on Ones, Concentration, Decisions
Nice to Have: Kicking, Rushing Out, Throwing, Anticipation, Composure, Stamina, Strength.

CENTER BACKS (DC)
Key: Heading, Marking, Tackling, Positioning, Jumping, Strength
Secondary: Composure, Concentration, Decisions, Determination
*** Stopper - aggression, bravery
*** cover - anticipation, acceleration
*** ball playing - passing, technique, creativity

FULL BACKS (DL/DR)
Key: Tackling, Positioning, Teamwork, Work Rate, Acceleration, Stamina
Secondary: Marking, Anticipation, Pace
*** support - crossing
*** attack - crossing, dribbling, off the ball

I would have thought marking would be more important and I don't quite get why anticipation would be more important here as opposed to center backs.

I have ignored Wing Backs as I never use them.

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS (DMC)
Key: Marking, Tackling, Positioning, Work Rate, Strength
Secondary: Passing, Decisions, Teamwork
Nice to Have: Anticipation, Composure, Creativity, Stamina

Alot of these looks like the center backs. So the dfference between them... is what? DMC have passing?

CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS (CM)
Key: First Touch, Passing, Decisions, Teamwork
Secondary: Technique
*** defending - heading, marking, tackling, positioning
*** support - marking, positioning, off the ball
*** attack - dribbling, creativity, off the ball

I would have thought the physical attributes would jump out here. Stuff like stamina, acceleration, no? And I would think that dribbling, creativity and off the ball would be very important here as well but they seem to be more used for attacking mids.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS (AMC)
What really is the difference between an AMC and a MC positioned to attack?
Key: Passing, Technique, Creativity, Decisions
Secondary: Finishing, First Touch, Work Rate
Nice to Have: Long Shots, Flair, Off the Ball
*** support - Long Shots, Team Work, Balance
*** attack - dribbling, off the ball, acceleration

WINGERS (MR/ML)
Key: Crossing, Dribbling, Technique, Flair, Acceleration, Pace
Secondary: Passing
*** attack - finishing
*** defensive - marking, tackling

FORWARDS
What exactly is the difference between a forward and a striker?
I kind of gave up here looking at the 5 or 6 different kinds of forwards.

But off the top of my head, finishing, composure, pace, acceleration...

I'd really like to put my guys in the role they should be in. So any help would be appreciated.

It can take hours for someone to explain all the different roles and positions in football so I'm not going to try, but on FM when creating a tactic, when you are selecting which role you want your players to take up their is a breif explanation of what it is. So you can understand the difference between an Anchor Man, Deep Lying Playmaker and Defensive Mid. So yeah check it out, should answer most of your questions!
