Can anyone recommend a good ball playing defender for my Arsenal team. I have Thomas Vermalen but I think I would rather play him as my limited defender so that I can take advantage of is defensive attributes. At the moment I am thinking of playing Thomas Vermalen as ball playing defender and Laurent Koscielny as Limited Defender but I am not sure sure about Koscielny in this position because from what I have read a Limited Defender needs to be tall and strong which Koscielny is not.

I was thinking of playing Laurent Koscielny as my ball playing defender and make a training schedule to improve is passing and decision making attributes. My other option would be to by Toby Alderweireld and play him as my ball playing defender because he has great passiing attributes (I think someone said he has the best passing for any central defender on the game).

However Toby Alderweireld stats as a central defender looks average. What do you guys think about a Alderweireld and Vermalean partnership at the back

I will be playing both defenders with the defend duty because I want to keep my defensive line balanced

So if the Fm experts can give me any advice in this area that would be very helpful or if you can point me in the direction of good ball playing defenders

Rafael Toloi - Goias
Jan Vertonghen - Ajax
Simon Kjaer - Wolfsburg

No problem playing Kocielny, Vermaelen or Alderweireld as ball playing defender, you just have to make sure that your central midfielders don't venture too far away from your center backs and keep your full backs/wingbacks' mentality at the same level as your central defenders'.

Thanks Mike I have my ball playing defender on 13 mentality do you think I should put my other center back and the full backs on the same mentality. Also my ball winning midfielder will have a lower mentality that my other midfielder who will be on advance playmaker support with mentality of about 12 -13. Would like to to know your feedback

you are also welcome....

My bad thanks for your help also Raikan. I have gone through the post on this site and it seems that you are a tactical expert so maybe a novice like me can ask for your help in this area.

Could you help me with the center backs because I am unsure if should use a Central Defender/Defend + Ball Playing Defender/Cover set up are if I should use a Limited Defender + Ball Playing Defender and have them both on defensive duty. Also if you can offer me some clarity on the mentality settings for the central defenders and full backs that would be great. I would like to know what numbers you would have them set up on the slider

I am a novice at this game only really started playing the game about 2 months ago and that was the demo now I want to play a full game and need all the help I can get.

So you being an expert at creating tactics and understanding mentality settings, match engine and how the AI works would be a great help to novice player like me

hey mate, what I can suggest is I use Defend and Cover duties as I play with a High defensive line and offside trap... if I use a stopper it will break the line and create gaps, I even use (most of the time Defend and Defend) as this keeps the line perfect all the time...

do you play with a Dm or Deep lying playmaker Cm? If so instead of asking a defender to play passes, get the Dm to drop deep and pick up the ball himself.. you dont want your CB having the pressure of looking to play passes etc, you just want them to defend..

I have them on little freedom, defensive through pass sometimes and the rest never... closing down just under the halfway mark and hard tackling zonal marking...

you can download the 4-3-3 tactic and see what the defenders roles/duties/PI's are as it is one of the best defensive tactics I have created... :)

I am playing a 4231 system with Arsenal which includes a advance playmaker/support Fabregas and Ball Winning Midfielder Defend Song
I know this off the topic but I have decided to try and play Jack Wilshere as an Inside Forward with Attack Duty because a lot of people on the forum says that with the right training he performs very good in that position. Also I will be playing Van Persie or Andre Arshavin as Inside Forward Support in the AMC position.

Thanks for your feedback Raikon and looking forward to learning more about tactics from an expert like yourself

Toby Alderweireld.

Perfect Ball Playing Defender :)

Yea that is good. Ball playing defender is a big advantage when you are playing short passing games

dont mess with Wilshere, play him in his preferred role mate :) buy someone else instead :) Arshavin inside forward and VP Advanced Forward attack :)

Hello mate
Not had a chance to download your tactic as yet but will do. I was reading through the recommend player for each position and it does seem that I have the right mix of players at Arsenal to play this formation. My only problem is I do not know where I would play Jack Wilshere. He does not seem to suit the Central Midfielder right position because you suggested a tall athletic player which he is not, and from your advice I should not play him as an inside forward. The only other role for him would be CML position but that role will be taken by Fabregas.

Do you think I should just stick to the 4231 formation with two deep lying playmakers CM position and Jack Wilshere in the AMC position.

I never said Inside Forward, he needs to be played as an Attacking Midfield - Attack! in the AMC position.. what you can do is retrain him to the AMR position and have him cutting inside onto his left foot and wreak havoc with his creativity and passing....

look at Jucilei - Corinthians and Javi Martinez - Athletic and Lars Bender - Leverkusen for good athletic Cm's...

Thanks mate but Jack Wilshere is already accomplished in the AMR right position. I dont understand why I would need to retrain him to play that position.

What roles would you suggest for for Jack Wilshere and Samir Nasri playing in the AMR/AML positions. I used a player calculator tool that suggested that their best roles are advance playmakers which they can play from the AMR/AML. Would it be better to play them as Inside Forwards so that get more goals and assist because for some reason I think playing them as advance playmakers would mean that they would not get enough goals.

What do you think

Wilshere is not an Inside forward for the last time (yes he can play in that role) but he is an Attacking mid (and Adv Playmaker) have them both set as that, cutting inside, playing through balls often, crossing sometimes, direct passing, roaming from position, high creative freedom, run with ball often, no long shots for Wilshere, sometimes for Nasri, run with ball often, run from deep often, make them work quite hard on defense too (tight marking, closing down 3/4's) medium tackling, cross from mixed, cross aim centre :)
