Hi FM enthusiasts! :D

Im pretty new to the site and the game itself. I've decided I want to take Barnsley all the way to European dominance :) but so far ive failed and been sacked after relegation from CS... twice! 2nd time I guess you can say I cheated by looking at the best free transfers I could get, infact I did worse then my 1st attempt.

I've read alot on the forum about tactics and I still can't get it right for Barnsley. Ive spotted reoccurring mistakes in each game and im not sure how to stop them from happening. I know Barnsley are basically a L1 team in the CS, so i've gone with a defensive approach in most matches.

Could someone give me some input on where im going wrong?

Free Transfers:
Mark Viduka - scores at least 1 goal every game, when not injured.
Dino Toppmóller
Samuel Kuffour
Pablo Cavallero

Loan Players:
Richie De Laet
Ryan Shotton - just returned to stoke after 3 months
Gael Kakuta - n00bishly got. Didnt noticed he had a global ban grr!

Some screenshots to better describe the situation.

You might have more success looking at changing the starting strategy to counter, it tends to not lose much defensively, but will provide more going forward.

I think you need a more effective link between the defense and the midfield. Especially with the rigid setting on, players will stick to their roles more, and thus with no support players in the middle you are effectively playing 5 attackers with 5 defenders, have you noticed the opposition exploiting a lot of space in the middle?

Also defensive counter attacking tactics tend to work a bit better with more players in the middle, it forces the opposition to either whip in crosses to an area you will have 4+ defenders ready to head away, or it forces them to try and pick through a two tiered defensive line of 8+ players.

Finally with your use of wide midfielders, but a bit of a gap and a strong targetman in Viduka, it might pay to focus passing down the flanks a little bit more.

Remember tactic creation is a whole lot about trial and error, I went through about 7 or 8 different tactics before I found the 4-3-3 advanced playmaker tactic that I am using right now. (Available for download)

Keep trying to create some more tactics if this does not work...

If you do make another one, I recommend 3 strikers, for some reason on FM10 tactics with 3 strikers up front seem to work quite well, especially when you have a targetman or complete striker paired with two poachers.

Good Luck

Yea i agree I normally would play a counter tactic with Barnsley.Drop deeper, direct passiing

Good luck

Thanks khodder. I have taken your advice and am currently trying out the 4-3-3 tactic.
