Does anybody else find that with a decent squad and careful management (keeping up morale) that just using the basic 4-4-2 formation and barely altering anything else gets the best results over time?

I have used some of Raikan's tactics in the past, made some of my own fancy tactics and yet i always end up coming back to 4-4-2 with a target man

I wouln't say 4-4-2 is the best, but rather the easiest to use. It's a very balanced formation, and unlike many others you don't need any specialised players. For example, a lone forward needs to be a lot better than when he's partnered, and likewise the fullbacks have a much easier time because there's a winger helping them out up front of them. Also, it's easy to set up a 4-4-2 in any side as you can be rather flexible, while a team that wants to do fancy false nine or inverted winger stuff will need a specific skillset in its players. In the end, though, formations are neutral - it's what you do with them. But as many of us are so accustomed to the 4-4-2 it's much easier to make a working tactic out of it.
