Gabriel Batistuta, former player of Newell´s, River, Boca, Fiorentina and Roma and top scorer for the Argentine national team, has been appointed by Sergio Batista to be his assistant coach.

Any thoughts?

Could be a very good appointment. I'm sure when he retired he said that he would never come back to football and was going into acting?

Anyway, Batistuta helping Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez sounds a very scary prospect. He's an icon in Argentina so could be a big publicity appointment to get more fan backing.

You mean like Maradona? Oh wait..

Not at all like Maradona. Maradona is a legend for Argentina, but has a reputation of being crazy and wild.

Batistuta is a legend and is known for being humble and successful. He never had any drug issues and was known and rated purely on his ability to score goals. I think it could prove to be an excellent appointment because of his status with the rest of the players (like Maradona), but then he will be able to provide tips for the strikers, whereas Maradona wouldn't have been able to do.

Also, Maradona was very popular among the players and fans, but one result cost him his job. I think he was fairly successful in his reign. Qualified for the World Cup (wasn't the best, but they got their) were rampant in the group stages, and then got out classed by a German side who also battered England and only just lost out to eventual winners Spain. His wild antics cost him the job in my opinion, not the sides performances on the pitch.

batigoal :DDDD.... loved him.... one of my fav. strikers ever...

After his Middle East adventure in Qatar, Batistuta moved to Australia where he launched a clothing line. Just recently he claimed to be back to the world of football.

That goal against Man United in the opening minutes to silence Old Trafford.................ROCKET

Not only one result mate. They never forgave him for losing against Brazil 1-3 in Rosario, also the demolition job by Bolivia. Argentina before the World Cup was playing very poorly. At the WC, he got lucky. It was an easy group. Nigeria wasnt the one of previous WC´s. Greece? Well we all know what their potential is. And South Korea, its always the same, good discipline, fast players, but they lack everything else. First strong opponent was Mexico, and Argentina was very lucky to win. Their midfield was awful, totally dominated by the Mexicans. If it wasnt for the offside goal, the terrible mistake in the second another outcome was certain.

Maradona the Manager was excellent at removing pressure from his players by taking the likes of Messi, Tevez etc out of the limelight.

But <3 Batistuta.
