PRE-SEASON REVIEW:

i am happy with how pre-season went. as the games went by, the more fitness my team got. the last two games i tried my tactic that i am using for season which is 4-1-3-2 formation with 3 attacking centre midfielders and 1 holding midfielder. i am looking forward to the start of the season and am confident to win the league.

PERSONAL POSITIVE: The form towards end of pre season

PERSONAL NEGATIVE: Losing to palmero in pre-season

OTHER NEWS: i have drawn teplice in the Europa League qualifer.

1ST Game of the season and was really hoping for a win. decided to go for a possesion based tactic where we hold onto the ball and play short simple passes.... end result was 3-0 and was very pleased with the score we dominated from start to finish and i grew in confidence for the important game in mid-week

View attachment 34079

Have to be completely honest and say i underestimated Teplice. i tried the same tactic as the last game, where i wanted to dominate and be patient but they were really tough to breakdown, kept counter-attacking and as a result they scored first, waited til the hour mark and made a triple sub, which enabled me to go a 4-3-3 formation and luck had it that A.Di Maria scored because it looked offside, i must have a plan "B" for the return leg.

View attachment 34080

Knowing that i would have to score in the second leg against teplice i tried my plan "B" against V.Guimares, putting it bluntly it was rubbish in theory going for a 4-2-1-3 formation seemed perfect as i had two holding midfielders, one box-to-box midfielder and three attackers, my team flopped and i was now regretting changing my plan.

View attachment 34081

For this match i decided to go back to plan "A" (hope your still following with the plans haha) We started the game well, but as in the first leg Teplice were a solid defensive unit. At Half-Time i told them that "We only need 1 goal"..... my famous last words as after i had gone 1-0 up,they broke from a corner all the way down the field and made it 1-1. it felt like save my season time... already. the game went to extra time and then penalties. To be honest i was waiting for the inevitable miss but it never came and we scraped through... just

Ok, After our dismal performance both in the league and cup i gave them the hairdryer treatment and demanded a win,... they wouldn't dissapoint. An emphatic 6-0-victory, it was an all-round brilliant display and went in to september with some confidence intact.

REVIEW OF THE MONTH

After starting well we stuttered in europe but got back on track with the 6-0 win. much is expected this squad and i know this will be no stroll in the park. September sees me playing F.C. Porto which will be imperative to my success, lets hope the team improves on P5 W2 D2 L1.

OTHER NEWS....

My Europa League is as Follows: Aston Villa, Toulouse and APOEL Nicosia

September Results & Review

View attachment 34233

International Games had hit me hard with six of my strongest eleven out injured, however i didn't want to use this as an excuse and set out to win.As seems to be the "Norm" in the league we started well and bagged an early goal thanks to a quite splendid free-kick from Rivaldo. Second half we started dreadfully and conceded a scrappy goal as we failed to clear our lines, fatigue and lack of ambition from my team resulted in a disappointing draw, but on the flip side that point could be vital come the end of the season.

View attachment 34234

Going into this game i still had injuries but crucially J.Saviola was fit to play and went straight into the starting lineup. He was to make an impact as he opened the scoring halfway through the first half. Three words was to sum up the end of the first half "LACK OF CONCENTRATION" . In the space of 5 minutes Toulouse scored twice. The Second Half i sent my troops out all guns blazing, we through everything at them, even the goalkeeper for the last minute of stoppage time from a corner but it was all to no avail. Players, Fans and myself were down-hearted but at least i know all we are missing is that player who will finish the chances off.

View attachment 34235

Away to Leira and i feel that my team was tired after playing in midweek. Another decent start and another lead, but ultimately losing 2-1 says to me that we can't keep our leads, this must mean that i need some decent holding midfielders or at least a change of tactic.

View attachment 34236

Having Key players back for this game, gave me the opportunity to go for all out attack. i went for an attacking 4-3-3 formation with slick sharp passing. A 3-1 victory hopefully gives my attacking options some confidence, but once agian another sloppy goal, by failing to clear our lines annoyed me, my defence needs to step up to the plate with Aston Villa coming next.

Review Of The Month
In My Opinion this was a fairly bad month for me. Yes we had injuries but this should be no excuse, the teams in the league we should be beating, and i was lucky that the FC Porto game had been rearranged to December because of European Games. i know that we need to defend better, and attack with more conviction. October Sees Me Play Aston Villa at the start of the month and a key game in the league against braga at the end of the month.

OTHER NEWS

Benfica have announced a new relationship with Japanese team Nigata Unicorn (Weird Name) as a way of producing merchandising in the far east

October Results & Review

This game was a case of "What goes around comes around". This was because after taking the lead despite Luisao appeared to have fouled E.Heskey in the build up the referee in my opinion wrongly let play carry on and we took our chance. The Villa plays wasn't pleased to say the least, However with one minute left to play a corner which seemed harmless was headed in the wrong direction by P.Aimar into the back of our own net. A very eventful match but a draw seemed fair.

View attachment 34254

In what turned out to be the second eventful game of the week, this too finished all-square. Minutes before the interval Rivaldo popped up in the right place to cooly slot the ball into the corner of the goal from 12 yards out. The second half started badly after conceding a goal Luisao seemd to hack down an oppoistion player (Kind of take down Jet Li would be proud of!) but unbelievably the referee did not give it and we got away with it. In the interview after the match i was asked on my view on the incident and i said " they class that as manslaughter in some countries!!)

View attachment 34255

This game left me with a dilemma. do i go all out attack and stuff six or seven past them for confidence or do i give my fringe players a go?, Ultimately i went for a mixture of both, and in the end it was a double from both Rivaldo, and On Loan Kerrison who settled the game. to be fair to the opposition there were of equilivent of League 2 in England.

View attachment 34256

Another mid-week game and confidence was riding relatively high in the team, APOEL Nicosia seemed weak on paper, but i cast my mind to Teplice earlier on in the season and was not going to underestimating this team. Luisao powered in early on with a "John Terry" type header from a corner, and it was his goal that would set the standard for the rest game, O.Cardozo neatly put away a chance at the end of the half. at half time i warned my team against complacency and in the second half we added a third, the goal we did concede was a good team goal on their behalf. But i was generally pleased with the professional yet not over spectacular shift put in.

View attachment 34257

This game in my opinion was out best performance at home so far this season, from start to finish we dominated and it could of easily been seven or eight. P.Aimar scored a scorcher from 30 yards out on the half-volley and that was a sign of things to come. The last goal was a wonderful team goal involving nine of the eleven players on the pitch, Sweeping Slick passing finally saw O.Cardozo one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He rounded the keeper and slotted it away to make it 5-0. Very impressed with the performance and was thinking this where we would kick start our season.

View attachment 34258

In arguably the most important game of the season so far, i found time to laugh when i realised that the referee was called RUI COSTA (Benfica Legend) sadly it wasn't the legendary midfielder but oh well it could be a sign. As usual a brilliant start saw O.Cardozo score with a bullet header into the top right hand corner. However due to what i would only call "Lack of Marking" enabled S.Braga forward Z.Meyong to creep in at the back post unmarked and tap the ball in from all of six yards. A good result but a case of what could of been.

Review of the Month

All in all i was very pleased with how October went, i single out to players in Rivaldo and Goalkeeper Quim. Rivaldo seems to be in the "Teddy Sheringham" role, because he doesn't have the pace but seems to be in the right place all of the time and his passing in near perfect. Quim also has been in good form pulling off stunning saves on a regular basis. November sees my team playing Sporting Lisbon another title contender.

Other News

Annoyingly Benfica's feeder team Victoria Guimares are currently top of the league 19 points out of a possible 24.

November Results & Review (Plus Transfer News!

An amazing first twelve minutes got us the three points in this game. J.Saviola scored within thirty seconds to amaze the home crowd. O.Cardozo's brace cemented our lead, Kerrison scored with an acrobatic scissor kick which so far has to be our goal of the season. Record signing D.Buonanotte scored a well placed curling shot from the edge of the area. Fantastic performance but the two crucial games in this group are yet to come.

View attachment 34326

For over a hour in this game neither team really got going, But bringing on Rivaldo (Back From 4 weeks injured) changed our team completely. He was pulling 30-40 yard passes and his cross was handled by the Naval defender, led to O.Cardozo calmly placing the penalty into the corner. A narrow win but a win.

View attachment 34327

The 4th round of the cup threw up Leiria who we lost to in the league earlier on in the season. As is surely now accustomed to our team an early goal was scored. The form player O.Cardozo scored in the second minute with a looping header, his second goal later on in this game would be an almost carbon-copy. Leiria would pull one back but D.Buonanotte scored again with a cheeky chip over the keeper. A good solid win and confidence going into the Lisbon derby against Sporting Lisbon.

View attachment 34328

The Lisbon Derby was more of a game of chess then of football. for eighty minutes it looked like no team was going to concede but a goal from Sporting forward Yannick sealed a loss for us. i was upset with the loss and obviously so were the fans.

Review of the Month

After an emphatic victory at the start of the month, the derby defeat has left me with a sour taste in the mouth. the team has performed well and our attack has a more of a lethal touch. Going into December the two Europa League games as well as the rearranged game against FC Porto will make or break our season.

Other News

Benfica can announce the signing of right back of A.Konko from A.S. Monaco for £1.5 million..... going out is Cm C.Martins leaving to Olympiakos for £3 Million....... Both transfers will go through on 1 JAN 2010

December Results & Review

View attachment 34446

Going into this game i knew that a win would push me within touching distance of qualifying for the next phase of the Europa League. It was a cagey start to the game but the class of Rivaldo put Toulouse's defence to the sword with two goals within seven first half minutes. In the second half Rivaldo would unfortunately get injured in quite a robust challenged which resulted in Rivaldo haved a fractured cheekbone. Despite this the team quite comfortably saw the rest of the game out and another precious three points on the board.

View attachment 34448

This game saw an unlikely hero in M.Meghni. not know for his goalscoring his two goals contributed to a three goal victory. On another bright note J.Saviola who hadn't scored for a while Scored a wonderful freekick to wrap the game up five minutes from the end. i am hoping that this consistency would continue throughout the month

View attachment 34449

This wasn't a game for the history books. The opening and closing fifteen minutes were the highlights but besides that it was a practice match. I was glad then when the chances came we took them... Eventually.

View attachment 34450

We went into this game knowing that a point would see us qualify but complacency and bad luck cost us dearly. my team hit the post three times and the crossbar twice. And as lady luck wasn't shining on us it was inevitable that the only shot they would have on target they would score. Bad luck and an allusive goal ended our Europa League dreams, I will have to make sure that all our efforts go into our league games and make sure we qualify for the champions league.

View attachment 34451

After such a devastating blow to our ambitions for the season, it was vital that we did not drop our heads and make sure we went into this game like our lives depended on it. In what turned out to be a truly epic match, end-to-end all game and in all honestly a draw was fair on both parties. 2009 has ended on a mixed note but 2010 we will need to kick on to win the league

Buonnonote is a good signing m8 :)
