Best set-up for CL glory?

i am currently with man utd, in my 3rd season and really struggling to break my CL duck. Last two seasons have been really strong in the league and domestic cups, challenging for the majority and winning a couple. European clashes have been boring affairs and we never look like coming out on top.

Perhaps i'm using the wrong setup when it comes to going into european ties. Here is my generic line up;

I'm currently playing a 442 system. Team below;

Neuer

Evra- Full back (Support)
Howedes- Defend
Ferdinand-Defend
Srna- Full back (support)

Bale- (Attacking) winger
De Rossi- (Defensive) ball winning
Pastore- (Advanced) playmaker
Nani/Valencia- (Attacking) winger

Rooney- Deep lying forward (support)
Chicharito- Poacher (attack)

Balanced philosophy
Short passing style
Disciplined
Press the opposition frequently

My primary playmaker is Pastore (for obvious reasons)
Target man is rooney, playing it to his feet


It would be great to gather some feedback from you all and see whether or not you can see any glaring errors in my setup/lineup.

in europe play wide men! it always works well for me 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1

Play a counter attacking more direct approach. European teams often can't handle the pace.

I've just finished my 4th season and I've got to 3 Champions League finals on the trot and lost all of them!! I'm in the same position as you, can't quite get there. I play with AMR/Ls and it works really well

its a freaking nightmare! i'd like to read your tactics and line ups though seeing as i havent even prgressed passed the quarters yet! lol

You have an awesome squad and I don't know why do you lose those matches... I played in my old Hajduk save(a Croatian club, players are way worser, also just an example, it plays in Europa League) in a 4-3(MC's)-2-1 formation:

Goalkeeper - defend

Full-backs- support
Left DC - defend
Right DC - cover

Left, Right MC - ball winning midfielder - support
Center MC - Box-to-box midfielder

AML/R - Inside forward support

STC - Poacher/Advanced forward

I can't show you the results but they were amazing... I got to the EL Finals and lost to Arsenal after DOMINATING them for the whole game, after extra time it was 1:0... for them...

Also you should get a CB(Ferdinand), RB(Srna), DMC(De Rossi) and AMR/L(Valencia/Nani) cause most of these players are getting old and you need some players on these positions...

I don't really know what should you do, it's maybe your tactic that ain't working or something, only sign some players so that you can replace those mentioned above...

I think maybe your right, youth players are almost ready to step up to the task but i would ideally like to give them another season or two being blended into the squad. i have chris smalling plus a brazilian prospect to step in for ferdinand. Purchased Serge Aurier to take over from Srna and Lorenzo Crisetig to replace De Rossi in the heart of midfield. I could really do with young AMR player as i am lacking in that area and Bebe just isnt good enough. Any Suggestions on that position?

For AMR maybe Gervinho, Hazard, Hulk, if you get Hulk/Hazard set them AMR Inside Forward Attack, if you get Gervinho Winger attack...

Feyenoord beating you? Just to refer to my Hajduk save, I have beaten in the first 3 seasons teams which are way better than Feyenoord like CSKA Moscow, PSG... There must be something wrong with your tactic at least for the CL...

Gervinho has just gone to sunderland, Hazard has just moved to Arsenal and Hulk is at AT Madrid!

I know mate, tbh it was a draw the whole game then gave away a silly penalty but still, should be comfortably beating them. But then i go back to England and am on a 10 game winning streak and havent lost in 19 lol. Its so strange.

Hulk is amazing for me, play him as AML winger support, played 45 games this season in total and got 11 goals with 23 assists. Got an average rating of 7.61. I sometimes play Hernandez up front on his own as poacher depending on who the opponent is in CL played in 41 this season with 37 goals and 16 assists.

It could be that your strikeforce isn't strong enough. In FM, Rooney and Hernandez are good but not great. Of course, there is a whole swarm of potential replacement strikers for a team like Manchester United. A good poacher would do well in a partnership with Rooney or Hernandez as an advanced forward. I recommend Aguero.

FINALLY won it! I stuck with my 4-4-2 and had a good run. In the first KO stage i came up against Shakhtar. then was put up against Chelsea in the quarters, then Arsenal in the Semis and finally AT Madrid in the final . I think its because i played against english teams and not foreign ones. Couldn't have been happier that i got Athletico in the final. Smashed them 3-0. Now onto the next year....
