Fellow managers:

When would you say is, generally speaking, the best time to sell and/or buy your players?
I don't mean in specific cases, like "when he's unhappy" or "when a good player is transfer listed".

I mean, when do the teams performances trigger your reputation and the player's value?

I'll put it clearer:

Sometimes you start with a smaller club, let's say, from Championship. After a successful season, you get promotion against the odds! obviously, more players will be interested in joining your team, now that you'll be playing in the premier league. So I want to know, when does the game trigger that reputation boost? Is it as soon as you play the last game of the league? Is it when the season summary is out? Is it July 1st?

The same thing goes for your players. Let's say you have a left winger that was good for your team. But now you qualified for the champions league and your scouts spotted a much better one that you can afford. So you want to sell him now, because not only he wouldn't enjoy being benched, but also because he did a good season. That means that his price should go up, and also that next season, as he would be benched, his value would decrease. So the time to sell him is now.
But, once again, when does the game trigger his inflation? is it as soon as the season ends? is it when the next season's features are out? is it when he gets selected in the league's team of the year? or is it anywhen else?

If any of you spotted these patterns, please enlighten me :D

I'm not certain about this but I think team reputation is dynamic, meaning it's constantly adjusting according to your team's accomplishments, league position, and player quality. It's easier to tell when the best time to sell individual players is since you can just go by their value. It's usually the highest after they play well in a high profile match, such as a cup final or after they finish an international tournament like the Euros or WC. But I think the best time to sell is simply whenever they catch the interest of other teams. The players will fetch much higher values than if you are forcibly pawning them off.

Selling players is easiest when there are bids coming in but watch out some clubs deliberately give low offers to unsettle your players, don't feel you have to sell someone (even your reserves) if they want to leave often once the transfer window ends and if the bidding team hasn't come back with a better offer the player will want to stay. As for buying don't just jump on to the band wagon of buying for the sake of it. Regular scouting of the player is important, you can usually pick up good players very cheaply that way. Also don't be afraid to bid outside the transfer window (especially in world cup seasons), you will have to wait for the player but you won't have to pay inflated fees if the player does well internationally, outside of the transfer window teams are often happier to sell for a lower price.
