Hearts hire David Galbraith as Manager.

Paulo Sérgio takes over at Porto to replace Chelsea-Bound Andre Villas-Boas. Hearts turn to First Team coach and playing legend David Galbraith to take over and give him his first taste as manager of a football club. The board, fans and press alike saw no better candidate than the local boy and former Hearts and Scotland Captain, morale couldn't be higher, but with no silverware in 5 years the pressure is on to deliver the goods...
Progress Reports:

Pre-season analysis:
First look at the squad shows that no dramatic changes need to be made for this season at least, although a few squad players may need to be added - especially as this seasons participation in the Europa League will no doubt result in a fixture congestion.

Key players for the season:

Marius Zaliukas: The Hearts and Lithuania powerhouse is no doubt going to be a main figure if this season is to be a successful one, definitely has his place cemented at centre-half.

David Templeton: there is no doubt about Templeton's ability and I will definitely be looking to get the best out of his ability to boss both wings and throw in his fair share of assists and maybe even the odd goal or two.

Eggert Jonsson: His youth and versatility will be called upon to to produce some consistency and hopefully be dependable as the lynch-pin of the midfield.

Summer Signings:

IN

10th July '11 - Jason Koumas (Free agent) - £0; Simply to add numbers and experience to the squad.

14th July '11 - Jlloyd Samuel (Free agent) - £0; The left-back position is relatively thin on the ground at the moment so this signing will help to cope with a fixture congestion or an injury.

30th August '11 - Conor Doyle (Derby County) - Loan; Injuries to Gary Glen and Kevin Kyle along with the inconsistency of John Sutton meant that attacking reinforcements are a must-have, also his age of just 19 will help to comply with the SPL rule of at least 3 under-21 players in the match squad.

30th August '11 - Andrea Orlandi (Swansea) - Loan fee £275K; Long-term injury to Rudi Skacel meant that a replacement attacking midfielder was required, also this player possesses a great amount of quality.

31st August '11 - Brice Ntambwe (Birmingham) - Loan; Young defensive midfielder to add energy and depth to the squad.

OUT

Adrian Mrowiec (Peterbrough) - £150K

Ryan McGowan (St. Johnstone) - Loan fee £30K

Gordon Smith (Hamilton) - Loan

Jamie MacDonald (Bristol Rovers) - £0

Ewan Saunderson (Clyde) - Loan

Ian Black (Celtic) - £300K

My initial aims for the season are to gain a respectable place within the Scottish Premier League; anything above and including 4th would be ideal for the first season at least. As far as cup competitions are concerned I would like to reach at least one final of either the League Cup or Scottish Cup. I would like to qualify for the Europa League group stages, however I am not fully concerned with this as I am aware that this could congest my fixture list and just a single heavy loss to a bigger team could ruin momentum and turn my season.

Targets:

Season 1: League - 4th Place or above; League Cup/Scottish Cup - at least one final; Europa League - Not my primary concern.

Season 2: League - 2nd Place or above; League Cup/Scottish Cup - Win at least one;

Season 3: League - Winner; League Cup/Scottish Cup - Win at least one; European Competition - Group Stages.

Coming next: Pre-season Match reports...
