Introduction

Hello! I've been reading stories on this site for a few years now and I've finally decided to write out a story of my own.

My favourite team to play as on FM is Athletic Bilbao purely for the challenge of developing youngsters, however I've decided to play as my favourite foreign team, and that is Napoli.

View attachment 457967

To give myself a challenge I am going to create Napoli's very own version of the Athletic's Basque only policy, this shall be called the Campania policy- Campania is the region in Italy where Naples is situated.

I have given myself a few exceptions though:

  • I can sign players who have previously played for the club if I want to- eg Lavezzi or Cavani.
  • I can sign Argentinian regens born in the same city as club
legend Diego Maradona (say this is the equivalent of the extended Basque region in France lol)

  • I can sign any Italian 16 year old if I want to, I'm going to try avoid this though
  • And finally, I can sign Marco Verratti if I wish (this breaks the first rule but he is one of my favourite Italians and this is the only exception haha!)

Obvious aims are to bring back the glory to Napoli, knock Juventus off their perch, European domination etc etc. However I would eventually like to win the World Cup with a Campania only Italian side!

Anyway, that's the general idea of the save. I hope you'll all enjoy it. I'm new to this so hopefully I will get better at presenting as I go along.

Ciro Ferrara returns to Napoli

View attachment 457970

Who better to bring success back to Napoli than iconic former player Ciro Ferrara?!
Here's some information of Ferrara:
Born in Naples on 11/2/1967
Napoli playing career: 1984-1994
247 League Appearances, 12 Goals
2 Serie A Titles- 1986-87 & 1989-90
1 Coppa Italia- 1986-87
1 UEFA Cup- 1988-89
1 Supercoppa Italiana 1990

Despite the Ma-Gi-Ca trio taking all the plaudits for Napoli's success, Ciro Ferrara was a rock at the heart of Napoli's defence

(He also spent 10 years playing for Juventus for some reason but we won't mention that haha!)

After arriving at the club the first thing I notice is how healthy the finances are looking, Cavani's huge summer sale is obviously a reason behind this, but the main reason is because of how well Aurelio De Laurentiis is running the club.

I promise the board Champions League Qualification and create a philosophy promising to develop my youth players. The board hand me a huge transfer budget and I immediately go and bid for Marco Verratti. PSG were very reluctant to sell but I eventually got my man for an overall ?41.5M with monthly installments. I can safely say that will be my most expensive acquisition on this save!
After purchasing Verratti PSG came in with a ?15M bid for Blerim Dzemaili which I accepted.
These were my only summer transfers except for sending a few youngsters out on loan.

My next job was to revamp the coaching staff. After sacking everyone I considered unworthy I brought in several staff members including Rene Meulensteen and David Platt.

My best staff acquisition was my new assistant manager though. He originally wanted to be my U19s manager for some strange reason but I sweet talked him into being my assistant!
Napoli fans may have heard of him...

View attachment 457969

That's right!! Diego Maradona is officially Napoli's assistant manager!
Couldn't believe it when he was interested in joining the club, should make the fans happy anyway!

Tactics

I have created a few tactics which I'm looking forward to using, but for the time being because of the players at my disposal I'm going to be using this tactic:

View attachment 457968

I'll change the player roles to suit the player I pick for each position and I'll be tweaking the instructions until I find the right balance.

Key Players

I am really happy with the current Napoli squad, the money made from the Cavani sale has been wisely reinvested.

I'm looking forward to playing Mertens, Callejon and Higuain, and I feel Raul Albiol adds some quality to the defence.

With Reina and Rafael I'm unsure who to make my number 1, Reina is currently better but only on loan, Rafael has the potential to improve and would benefit from being first choice right away.

I'm a big fan of the Swiss duo Valon Behrami and Gokhan Inler, really enjoy using them on FM.

The two players I'm most excited about though are the crazy haired Slovakian Marek Hamsik and Naples' very own golden boy Lorenzo Insigne! I feel these two have the ability and potential to lead this club to glory and become true world class players!

The only youngster I'm really excited about is Lorenzo's younger brother Roberto Insigne, he has 4 1/2 star potential and is currently out on loan to Padova, I'll be keeping track on his progress there.

So there we have it, apologies for the ridiculously long post, the ones in future will be much more to the point and hopefully more interesting!
Constructive criticism is more than welcome!

Next update will be up to the end of September, it's been an interesting start to the season!

Overview
Awful start to my career losing 3 and drawing 1 in my first 4 games
Salvage the month by winning my next 3
Reject a ?30M bid from Man City for Hamsik
Nightmare Champions League Draw- Barcelona, PSG and Zenit!

I got off to a horrible start, throwing away a 2 goal lead to lose 3-2 away to Genoa, my fault for tinkering with the tactics when I thought I was cruising. Then I lost 1-0 at home to Juventus much to the disgust of my fans. I then came back from behind twice to draw with AC Milan at the San Siro and get my first point as a manager!

As Napoli were 4th seeds for the Champions League draw I was expecting the worst, and drawing Barcelona, PSG and Zenit was very close to the worst draw possible! Luckily I avoided Borussia Dortmund from the 3rd seed pot as well! So Cavani and Lavezzi (and Dzemaili) were returning to the San Paolo and I'm desperate to beat them!

In my first CL game I was off to the Nou Camp, and was soundly beaten 3-1, suppose I was quite lucky to only lose by 2 in the end.

So after 4 games I was already fearing losing my job! I had had a pretty tough start to the season, and the next 3 games all looked winnable, and I went and beat Fiorentina, Bologna and Udinese comfortably!

Serie A
Genoa 3-2 Napoli
Higuain (18), Insigne (56)

Serie A
Napoli 0-1 Juventus
-

Serie A
AC Milan 2-2 Napoli
Higuain (56), Hamsik (71)

UEFA Champions League Group B
Barcelona 3-1 Napoli
Higuain (75)

Serie A
Napoli 2-1 Fiorentina
Inler (35), Hamsik (pen 65)

Serie A
Bologna 1-3 Napoli
Cannavaro (49, 90+3), Callejon (84)

Serie A
Napoli 5-3 Udinese
Fernandez (11), Albiol (18), Hamsik (46, 63), Inler (84)
Hamsik also missed a penalty for his hat-trick!

Overall a pretty average start to life at the San Paolo, I'm quite a few months ahead at the moment and never took any screenies of the league table etc, but once I've caught up those things will be added!

Player of the Month goes to Hamsik, keep switching his role between Advanced Playmaker, Shadow Striker and Trequartista, can't decide which he's most effective as yet!

Ambitious plans :) Good luck, mate! Always liked Napoli, hopefully you will reproduce the MaGiCa success - the current team certainly has enough potential for big things!

Thanks a lot! Really enjoying the save and quite enjoying writing it up too! I'm a big fan of your Blasphemy story from FM13 and your new one is looking good too!

Thank you, hopefully it picks up pace over the next few days :)

Overview

Cavani & Lavezzi return to the San Paolo

Unbeaten in all competitions
Big win over Zenit in Russia to keep qualification hopes alive
Higuain in disappointing form

Overall a very good month, unbeaten so can't complain too much! We drew 1-1 at home to PSG, Britos got a straight red card after I brought him on so we desperately holding onto a draw (immediately fined him 2 weeks wages haha!). We kept Cavani and Lavezzi quiet though which was pleasing!

We also beat Zenit 3-0 in Russia which was a very pleasing game! It was a very even game but we just took our chances.

We won 2 and drew 2 in the league which isn't title winning form but it is an improvement on last month! The team are starting to get used to my tactics now hence the rise in form.

Form wise Higuain has been disappointing so far, but he hasn't learnt Italian yet so I'll cut him some slack! Zapata isn't good enough to really challenge him for a first team place yet so I'm on the hunt for a Naples born striker to provide some competition!
Reina has only managed 2 clean sheets in 12 games though and from watching the goals we've conceded he's had some absolute howlers! Rafael will be getting his chance next month.

UEFA Champions League Group B
Napoli 1-1 PSG
Mertens (pen 54)

Serie A
Atalanta 2-2 Napoli
Mertens (pen 30), Insigne (77)

Serie A
Napoli 3-1 Catania
Leto OG (31), Pandev (58), Radosevic (89)

UEFA Champions League Group B
Zenit 0-3 Napoli
Insigne (12), Callejon (29), Behrami (81)

Serie A
Lazio 0-0 Napoli
-

Serie A
Napoli 2-1 Chievo
Mertens (33, pen 56)

Player of the Month

Dries Mertens (or Dries Lightning as I like to call him)
The penalty taking king! 4 goals this month (3 pens) and also 1 assist show that Mertens had a very productive month on the left wing!

(Still no League table, I'm currently at the start of March so there won't be one for a while, I know I was around the top 6 though. But there's only one table that matters, and that's the one after 38 games!)

November

4 points from 3 games in the league- meh!
Beat Zenit at home in the Champions League!
Walked over Barcelona at home to qualify with 1 game spare!!!!
Find a Naples born striker to provide competiton for the still disappointing Higuain.

Domestically this month was very average, but continentally this month was incredible!

In the league I drew with Sampdoria, beat Torino and lost to Inter in Walter Mazzarri's first match against Napoli since leaving in the summer. In terms of league positioning I'm still knocking around in the European slots, there's no runaway leader which surprises me as I expected Juventus to not drop many points.

In Europe a 92nd minute Insigne winner ensured I beat Zenit at home to put myself 3 points clear of PSG, and then I knew if I bettered their result in the next match I would qualify with a game to spare! I beat Barcelona 2-0 and they were humbled 3-1 in Russia!
When the group stages were drawn I was expecting Europa League football after Christmas at best so to qualify with a game to go is hugely pleasing.

I gave Rafael a chance this month and he wasn't much better than Reina lol! I felt more confident with him in between the sticks though and played him in 4 out of 5 matches.

I found Higuain isn't adapting to Italian football very well and is only performing in European matches. Because of this I've occasionally been playing Insigne up front with Mertens and Callejon in the inside forward roles.

I finally found the solution to my problems when I was searching for Naples born strikers. Turns out a certain 36 year old Udinese icon was born in Napoli and is a huge Napoli fan! Yes, the one and only Antonio Di Natale! I immediately bid 4.5M for him and I was surprised when they accepted.

It may seem like a lot of money for a 36 year old but he's scored over 20 league goals a season for the past 4 years and is an ideal short term solution to help provide Higuain with some stern competition.
It's also tough being so limited in what players you can bring in! It's very similar to Llorente when he was at Athletic Bilbao, even if he was playing poorly there was no better striking option available unless an incredible Basque regen had appeared.
I can now loan Zapata out to get some much needed regular first team action, and with Eduardo Vargas returning from his loan spell in Brazil in January I suddenly have a lot more quality and depth to choose from!

I'm in March now but here's a screenshot of Di Natale.

Player of the Month

Club captain Paolo Cannavaro wins the prestigious award this month. He may not be of the same quality as his older brother was but he performed well in every match for me in November, popped up with 2 goals and had an average rating of 7.55.

(I think Aurelio De Laurentiis got the wrong month for Movember, great tash though!)

From walking over Barcelona to struggling to a home draw against Livorno! Typical!!
10 points from 4 games in the league, very pleasing!
Meltdown in Paris, was 5-0 down at half-time! Lavezzi scored a hat-trick as well...
Drawn Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League
Drawn Inter at home in the Coppa Italia 1st Round- the hardest team possible!!

Overall this was a very good month! Had a slight blip in the league against Livorno but after the joys of the match against Barcelona 4 days before I can let my players have one off day!
We beat Parma, Cagliari and Sassuolo by 1 goal each, need Di Natale ASAP, Higuain just cannot score domestically.

The PSG result was my fault, I showed them too much respect and changed my tactics, decide to try hit them on the counter attack and played with a high-line- before I knew it we were 5-0 down and Lavezzi was taking the match ball home before half time!
I decided against bollocking my players (it was my tactical naivety after all!), switched back to our standard formation and promptly won the 2nd half 2-0!
I wasn't too bothered by the result because we had already qualified and PSG didn't haha! It was a much-needed lesson for when I play the away leg in the last 16 though!

Serie A
Napoli 1-1 Livorno
Albiol (68)

Serie A
Parma 0-1 Napoli
Insigne (36)

UEFA Champions League Group B
PSG 5-2 Napoli
Callejon (49), Hamsik (55)

Serie A
Napoli 1-0 Cagliari
Hamsik (20)

Serie A
Napoli 2-1 Sassuolo
Insigne (77), Hamsik (pen 87)

Final UEFA Champions League Group B Table:

View attachment 454107
I drew Manchester United in the Champions League Last 16 draw, I feel this is a more winnable proposition than other teams such as Bayern, Barcelona or Real Madrid. (Sorry, no screenshot)

Going into the new year I'm very happy with how the team is playing so far! Marek Hamsik is currently an absolute class above anyone else in my team and his performances have been brilliant.

Higuain has been a major disappointment and Di Natale will be given a starting role as soon as he arrives.

Edu Vargas is returning as well and I'm looking forward to having even more quality to choose from on the wings.

(STILL no league table screenshot but I know I was in and around the Champions League spots at this point)

Player of the Month

I feel like this is going to become a recurring theme but I have to give it to Hamsik. He's outstanding. Winning goals against Cagliari and Sassuolo ensured we finished 2013 on a positive note and kept up the pace-setters at the top!

(Back in Ferrara and Maradona's playing days!)

Knocked out of the Coppa Italia at the first hurdle
Lose to Juventus- AGAIN!
Beat AC Milan at the San Paolo
Di Natale arrives and settles in very quickly
Messi wins the Balon d'Or again (he's got nothing on my assistant though!)

January was a pretty average month- I beat Verona, Genoa and AC Milan, drew away to Roma and lost 1-0 to Juventus for the second time in a row.

Losing at home to Inter in the Coppa Italia annoyed me though. I was comfortably winning 1-0 thanks to a Mertens penalty, but I forgot to alter my game plan in the last 10 minutes to see out the game. Instead I carried on attacking them and in the 92nd minute they equalised.

In extra time Inler gets an injury in the 100th minute meaning I'm down to 10 men. Inter then scored a quick 2 goals thanks to their extra man and Mertens' consolation was too little, too late.
Another tactical error by me has cost me our place in the Coppa Italia and the extra 30 minutes we had to play did not help my players with the 3 games in 7 days that came after this match.

Coppa Italia Round 1st Round
Napoli 2-3 Inter Milan (aet)
Mertens (pen 78, 120+2)

Player of the Month

View attachment 453938

Marek Hamsik (again!)

3 goals, 1 assist and 2 MOTM made this an easy choice for me again. Honourable mention to Di Natale and Vargas, both have settled in quickly, scored and won a MOTM each.

Finally catching up with myself now, still no league table, I know I was in the top 2 at this point though.

Next Month, first leg against Manchester United at the San Paolo and 4 'easier' league fixtures.

Also, I've just noticed Italy didn't qualify for the World Cup on my save but Prandelli still has his job! Are there less international management sackings this year? I've seen a few underachieving nations keep their manager now!

February

We beat Manchester United at home, and we didn't concede an away goal either which is a big bonus!
Beat Fiorentina and Bologna
Drew with Udinese and Atalanta
Cannavaro out injured for 2 months

This was a good month- disappointed with the 2 draws but an unbeaten month with a win over Man Utd is still very successful in my eyes!

Serie A
Fiorentina 1-2 Napoli
Maggio (25), Hamsik (pen 35)

Serie A
Napoli 3-0 Bologna
Di Natale (19), Hamsik (55), Armero (71)

Serie A
Udinese 1-1 Napoli
Callejon (83)

Serie A
Napoli 1-1 Atalanta
Fernandez (76)
Cannavaro got injured here, not happy!

UEFA Champions League Last 16, 1st Leg
Napoli 1-0 Manchester Utd
Higuain (36)

View attachment 453935 View attachment 453934 View attachment 453933

Higuain comes good in Europe again!!
Fellaini getting sent off with 20 minutes to go was a blessing because it completely nullified their attacking threat and ensured I could comfortably see the game out. Keeping a clean sheet at home has given me a big advantage going to the second leg at Old Trafford!

Player of the Month

Christian Maggio

A very good month from my wing back, consistently high standard performances including an assist and a MOTM performance against Manchester United!

(The 2011/12 Coppa Italia winning squad!)

A draw at Old Trafford sees us through to the Quarter Finals
Youth Intake Day, a future star arrives!
Another tough draw in the Champions League Quarter Final
Another unbeaten month in the league

I'll start with the league matches in this update:

Catania 0-0 Napoli
-
I had 24 shots in this game but created 0 clear cut chances! Disappointed, I had a very strong team out as well.

Napoli 3-0 Lazio
Di Natale (4), Insigne (52), Hamsik (55)
That's more like it! A very comprehensive victory where we took the chances that came to us

Chievo 3-4 Napoli
Hamsik (39, pen 68), Zuniga (43), Rafael (!!!!!) (46)
A game of absolute madness. Inler got sent off in the 2nd minute and Chievo went 2-0 up. We'd pulled it back to 2-2 by half time, and then in the first minute of the 2nd half my keeper Rafael scored an absolute Begovic of a goal to put us 3-2 up! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Chievo then equalised before Hamsik scored the winner from the penalty spot after a very dubious (and lucky- for me) decision by the referee!

View attachment 453702

Napoli 0-0 Sampdoria
-
This game was straight after the Old Trafford match so I was playing a 2nd string side. Disappointed to drop 2 points though!

Torino 0-4 Napoli
Hamsik (3, 80), Vargas (70), Verratti (76)

View attachment 453701

A great way to end the month with a majestic performance away to Torino! Hamsik has kept up his fine form and Rafael got his 4th domestic clean sheet of the month!
Also if you take a look at the match overview screenshot you might notice a new centre back with an 8.3 rating...!

THE EVER ELUSIVE LEAGUE TABLE

That's right, it's finally here! This is the current league table. As you can see below only 6 points separate the top 6 sides; Sampdoria are massively overachieving and Roma are somewhat underachieving. I'm feeling very confident of getting into the Champions League and my current form is making me believe I can bring Napoli their first Serie A title in 24 years!

View attachment 453696

Right, moving on.. March has been a busy month!!

UEFA Champions League

Now to the biggest match of my jam-packed March.

UEFA Champions League Last 16, 2nd Leg
Manchester United 1-1 Napoli
Insigne (20)

View attachment 453692 View attachment 453691 View attachment 453690

Insigne's 20th minute strike meant Man Utd needed 3 goals without reply to qualify! This filled me with confidence and even though they had 35 shots on goal, 23 were long shots and they only created one clear cut chance. I was very pleased with this result and felt we fully deserved to go through!

I was nervous before this 2nd leg but I realised that in the group stages I beat Barcelona on away goals (lost 3-1 away, won 2-0 home) and this helped me realise that this Napoli squad is capable of beating anybody!

UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Draw

Juventus, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal and Benfica are all left in the competition. The dream draw would be Benfica. They're the only team I'd feel we'd be the bookies favourites against.

View attachment 453689

That's right, I've drawn the current Champions League holders Bayern Munich! We play at the Allianz Arena first so hopefully I can keep within touching distance and get an away goal.
I suppose if you want to win the Champions League you have to be able to beat the best!

Youth Intake Day

Only one player stood out from my youth intake, and due to Paolo Cannavaro being out for the next month or so I've decided to put him straight into the first team squad!

View attachment 453688 View attachment 453687

It's always exciting to see someone labelled as the next Franco Baresi!!!
I'm so excited by this player, over 2 metres tall, great ratings in Determination, Heading, Tackling, Leadership, Teamwork and Jumping. His 10 rating in Strength isn't anything to worry about, he's only 15 so that will naturally improve.
I can already see Fumarola being a future captain of Napoli!
I immediately gave him his debut against Sampdoria and after a solid display along with a clean sheet I started him again against Torino and he got an 8.3 rating!

Unfortunately nobody else from my youth intake looks like they will make the first team squad in the future.
I did however agree deals for 2 players:

Ferdinando Maiorano- ?825K- Torino

View attachment 453686

Looks like a decent prospect who at the very minimum will make me some sort of profit.
He's also from Torino meaning he has something in common with me and all of Napoli- he hates Juventus!

Juan Manuel Buscaglia- ?1.1M- Racing Club

View attachment 453685

I found this guy in April but I thought I'd post him the Youth Intake post.
Looks like a very good prospect, who again if nothing else make me some form of profit.
He can't join until he turns 18 in 2016 though, but my thinking is by then Behrami will be on the decline, and because of my recruiting limitations I thought I had better get some other options in in advance

I love March, it's always a busy and exciting month!

Player of the Month

This was a tough choice this month- Hamsik has been going goal crazy and Insigne was outstanding in the Champions League tie. I was tempted to give it to new boy Fumarola for how quickly he settled into the first team- 2 clean sheets and an 8.3 rating, but in the end I felt only one man could win this award for March..

View attachment 453684

4 clean sheets and 1 goal shows exactly why my keeper Rafael won Napoli's player of the month for March!

All in all a very successful, exhausting and exhilarating month!

This is one epic story! Makes me want to start a Napoli story now lol you have some strong squad madness!
