Buying an out-of-contract player

If a player's contract has ended, but they are still playing on a week-by-week basis for a club, how do you sign them without making an offer to the club? I just started a new game and I want to sign Andriy Rusol and his contract ended on Jan. 1st (it's mid-January at this point) but the team want 13m for him. I'm new to FM...why should I have to pay his club for the transfer when he's not even under contract anymore? Other teams have swooped in for some of my guys in the last 6 mths of their contract without consulting me first.

Isnt there an 'Approach to sign' button on the menu where you can make an offer etc.

i had the same problem tryin to get rusol on a free i think he went over his contract by a month an i couldent approch to sign only make offer

There is no 'approach to sign' button. Looking around more, I believe it may be some kind of flaw. I've unsettled him by talking in the press and he's trying to "impress" me etc. but he still plays on this month-by-month contract. Sucks because he looks like a good player but they want a lot for him.

Thats strange there should be an aproach to sign option never encountered that before.
