can someone link me good threads/articles regarding making a tactic from scratch.

Also anything regarding player roles etc

On the official SI forums, go on the Tactics & Training Discussion and there's some fantastic articles and guides on tactics. Look at the stickies, especially Pairs & Combinations, Lines & Diamonds and then 'Building a Tactic From The Beginning And Maintaining It Long Term', definitely fits your bill. There's also some good links to blogs that can provide you with further information. Long but worthy reads.
 
Every guide written in the last three or four years is flawed....every site, every forum, every blogger has only partially correct info...if you follow any of those to the letter, you will win some, and lose some games...everybody is writing about all possibilities you have, but nobody will tell you what perfect instructions and roles are...which may lead you on the wrong track. IMHO, you have two options. First, buy football books and try to learn from them, might be more accurate, I'm not really sure, and second, try everything you read from those flawed guides ingame, which is very time consuming, and dependant on accuracy of games match engine, but you will eventually filter out the bullshit and learn what proper settings are. Took me almost 4 years for that. Have fun!

Which is why the SI forum guides are recommended, not every guide. They're not flawed. They are full of good, solid tactical concepts, both IRL and FM. The key is still knowing why these guides recommend what they are recommending.

Most importantly - it's not plug and play - you still need to use your brain.

Just read Lines and Diamonds and you will succeed with any club. However, remember it's like almost 200 pages of reading :P
 
I'd read a mix of all of them on SI and also the Guide To Football Manager website, they are all extremely useful in giving you a bit more in depth information to the roles and duties but the next step is watching games and learning it a bit more for yourself. I promise you it will come, I used to struggle a lot but now I feel a lot more content when making a tactic. Also it depends how you approach them, go with an idea of your own for every club or go for a tactic based on what you feel suits the squad you have, I am of the latter personally, then add players who fit that tactic and potentially a new future one.
