A small intro story.

FM18 is my first FM since I played 10,11,13 and 14 editions.

I don't use downloaded or "сheating" tactics, I enjoy creating my own tactics. As I see things has changed a lot. To be fair, gameplay and tactics seems to be more realistic by far. As a positive changes I also see now that using 3 central defenders finally works well (which would cause a complete mess in FM13 and FM14), also wing-backs are doing well now (i tried to build a 5-3-2 formation with wing-backs back in 2011: СDs performed ok, but WB/FB were largely underperformed, mainly because there were an extremely low number of natural WB in the game).

But there is one thing I desperatly miss in new FM. Playmakers. Well I know, they are not popular even in a real football these days. But I like that old-school thing. In all my previous saves, in all tactics I have created I used a pair of players: advanced playmaker RCM or ACM + poacher ST/STR. And enjoyed this duo creating beautiful game. One of the best FM memories is Gauthier Mahoto - a young playmaker, signed as free agent, who marched with me from 5th-tier to the Premier League with Southport fc in fm11.^^)

I am in my first season now with Maidenhead, testing different formations and tactics. As we are underdogs of Vanarama National League, counter attacking 5-3-2 works pretty well now with a loaned fast striker. It's cool... but it looks kind of too primitive... I had a classy CM in team, with good passing technical skills and vision. Wherever I place him, whatever instructions I try with advanced or deep-lying playmaker role, he keeps wondering in the middle of the pitch, useless at defense situations and ineffective at attacks. Single assist in 16 games by now. 90% of our goals are scored after long passes on our poacher from the deep (playing 532) or after crosses from the byline when (playing 4231/41221). Lower tempo and shorter passes just don't work. :(

Is there anyone, who successfully use a playmaker in FM18? I really want to hear you advice on how to adopt my tactics to see more combinations and more goals assisted by CMs.

DLP on D duty is my most important role of my team. Keeps things ticking and make sure some key tackles and interceptions. Vision is crucial and is a key factor as to why it’s not uncommon for him to make some beautiful long balls to the wingers/IF. I have struggled with advanced playmaker but deep lying seems key now

Give your playmaker space and give him passing options. With a DLP, some players who can make something happen. With an AP, give him runners who get get into goal scoring positions.

Thanks for advices. I should give it a shot. My playmaker has a low speed, but pretty good defensive skills. Another reasons to try him as DLP.

I'll try to use him as a DLP in 4-1-2-2-1 formation. Hope, he will supply inside forward and poacher.
