I've installed through steam using activation key.

Now when i click on play game or click on the desktop shortcut nothing happens.

Okay, load up Steam and it should automatically bring up the Store page. Click on your 'Library' and find Football Manager 2012 and try to load from there.

Let me know how that goes.

When i click through there it just bring us the spinning disc next to the cursor then stops. 1st time i click it after the loading icons stops spinning it brings up the steam update news as if i've just exited the game.

It MAY be a bit slow too. Took a few minutes to load it up first time for me, now it's perfectly fine load-time wise.

What other processes (applications/programs) are you running at the same time?

EDIT: Oh, and what is your RAM?

Maybe the icon on your desktop is corrupt, try going through All Programs > Sports Interactive > FM2012.

Theres nothing else running on computer other than the Safari browser im using to be ont his forum and my laptop is pretty much brand new 4GB of ram, windows 7, 600gb harddrive

Did you install through Steam or did you go through an 'Offline' installation?

installed it through steam. Just the all automatic stuff that comes up with the disk bringing up the steam page, request for activation key etc...
