Dear FM09 Guru's

I am currently Bradford City on League 2 (1st season). The minimum requirement for this season is promotion so the pressure is on to get a winning team together.

I have the strongest defence in the league just 11 goals conceaded in 17 games, but my strikers/midfielders are really letting me down!!

We seem to create a whole host of chances in every game but very rarely hit the back of the net. The midfeilders shoot wildly from distance even though i have long shots set to "Rarely"

I brought in Ibrahim Thaim from Drogheda in Ireland because he had scored 26 in 31 in the Irish Premier, but for me he has managed just 2 goals in 17 games. Peter Thorne can't score and neither can Michael Boulding.

I'm not sure what i can do. We seem to keep losing games 1-0 when we have dominated for 90 mins.

Curent team is:

GK F.Forster
LB L.O'Brien
RB R.De Laet
CB M.Andrews
CB Z.Rehman
LW O Daley
RW R.O'Brien
CDM S.Soley
CAM L.Bullock / D.Furman
STK M.Boulding
STK I.Thiam

Any advice would be appreciated!!

new striker?

i havent played an english save for a while so the only players i can reccomend you are suitable for the lower spanish leagues.

whats your tactic btw? do you play it down the wing? thru the middle etc? are you trying to play silky football when bombing it to a big lump is surely the order of the day in league 2? are your strikers quite small and weak, maybe with poor heading stats?

in spanish second div b1 (comparable to league 2) with cultural leonesa, i played a very simple tactic.

standard four accross the back, full backs going forward in a normal manner, (ie not roberto carlos style)

standar 4 accross the middle with the 2 centre mids being quite defensively minded. the 2 wingers were balanced between defending and attacking.

i then had an AMC to the right of centre with runs into the right centre forward postion and a left centre forward. these 2 boys were my flair players, full attack, lots of creative freedom, long shots etc whereas most of my other players concentrated on defence. i simply bombed the ball up to them and they would do the business, with some support from the wingers. this saw me get promoted in a season where i was heavy favourite for relegation.

give me some more info on your tactics and i can hopefully help you out.

JDM, thanks for the response,

I play a flat back 4 which is fantastically solid, no problems in the defensive third.

Then i play one central defensive midfielder who protects the back for and is my main ball winner. Then i have two players in the right and left midfield positions who provide really good width. As both are good at dribbling and one particularly good at crossing most of our chances come from crosses. I then have a central attaking midfielder although he does lack creativity as one of his attributes.

Upfront i have a small pacey striker (Boulding) along side a tall, strong, good in the air Senegalese striker who was a goal machine for his last club. He is 13 at finishing, 16 at heading, 17 jumping, 19 strength, etc.

I play neat sweet and into feet football which really opens up teams but the goalscoring floodgates don't seem to open. I don't like to play hoof-ball in League 2 because the central defenders on the other teams are just as good as my tall striker and win the ball more often.

Any advice based on this?

Cheers

focus on getting ur corners right ur defence seem to be doing the job get ur cbs marking the keeper u can get 20 goals a season just from corners

What are your individual instructions for your strikers please? put a screenshot up bud.

without more tactical ifo i would say that your attacking mid would be the problem

maybe drop him back into central midfield with your dm and just use ur wingers and strikers for attacking. play the ball wide and down a certain wing if u have an exceptional player on one side.

use you 2 central midfielders as statioanry passers (in the style of gattuso and pirlo), turn through balls on and lots of short passing, not many forward runs. so they will recieve the ball and offload to one of your attacking four players and then simply hold position to cover you back four. i find this often occupies the opponents central midfielders sufficiently to give your atatcking four lots of space

and yeah, sort your corners out. get them into the 6yard box and have your biggest strongest best headers(usually centre backs) challenging the gk.

whats your big stiker like at passing/flair/creativity? you could set him as target man and to hold up the ball and offload to the speedy one. if u dont want to hoof then set passes into targetman as 'to feet'

Im from Hartlepool and when im them James Brown gets a few goals so if you can get him go for it and also Adam Boyd scores a canny few.

JP Woody,

As i am @ work i cannot post a screen shot. If you could post a screen shot of what to set a target man at then i would very much appreciate it. I will print it off and take it home to try out if you could.

JDM,
Off the top of my head i couldn't tell you Thiam's creativity, flair etc. i would have to check that later. I wasn't aware marking the keeper would pay such dividends. i used to do this on an old game and kept giving away fouls!!

Both my wingers are good, Ronnie O'Brien is not as quick as Daley but 16 at crossing means he wips the ball in with real pace. Daley is annoying because he does all the hard work of cutting inside and then instead of playing the strikers in he blast it over or wide desptie having long shots "rarely" and through balls "often".

AARRGGHH!!

It drives me mad!! lol

turn daleys creative freedom down. the more the creative freedom bar is set to the right, the more a player is allowed to ignore your instructions. so having long shotts rarely will make no difference if he has a high amount of creative freedom.

even if his creativity and falir arent that great, give it a go as a taregetman with passes in to feet. get him to hold the ball up. his strength is good and as long as his passing is ok it should still work, he will try to give it to your speedster or wingers, if it goes to the winger he should then burst into the box and get onto the end of some crosses.

yeah if you have a decent corner taker and a couple of big strong headers then you can reap 20-30 goals a season. its a bit more realistic on this patch but on the 9.1.0 update i had michael turner at hull score 27 goals in a season!?!?

Reduce long shots and increase time wasting so your players take more time and are more composed in-front of goal.
