Championship Football in 5 Years” was the bold statement new Chesterfield Director Dave Allen made as he took his seat ain front of the gathered local press.

Dave Allen, former Sheffield Wednesday Chairman and Casino Magnet joined the board investing an initial £4 million, of which £2 million he insisted would be non-repayable to add the finishing touches to the new ground development on Whittington Moor due for completion July 2010.

The hot topic on the gathered reporter’s lips was of course Lee Richardson’s successor. Rico (as he was known to the fans) was dismissed of his duties at the end of last season following 2 failed attempts to lift the Spireites out of League 2 following there relegation in 2007.

Both Allen and Chesterfield Chairman Barrie Hubbard quashed rumours Former Oldham Manager John Sheridan had been approached following last nights slashing of odds with many Bookmakers after Sheridan’s former Oldham sidekick Mark Crossley was appointment as Goalkeeping Coach.

Allen insisted that no decision had been made but a shortlist had been drawn up from many interested parties and that they hope to have a new Manager installed as soon as possible to begin the task of achieving what Dave Allen states is a clear possibility – “Championship Football in 5 Years

SPIREITES MAKES SHOCK SMITH APPOINTMENT

Chesterfield FC today announced that Rookie Manager Steve Smith had been appointed as successor to Lee Richardson at Saltergate.

Smith (30), has a wealth of management experience in the lower echelons of Non-League Football, most recently overseeing proceedings at neighbouring Worksop Town before securing a position with Chesterfield as the Spireites Youth Team Manager alongside Dave Bentley.

Barrie Hubbard presented Smith to the media in a press conference held at Saltergate this morning and stated: “Steve has all the credentials we were looking for in a manager to lead us out of this era and into a new one come next July, and his passion, drive and knowledge of the Club will put us in strong standing to immediately make a Promotion Challenge this season.”

Many would see this statement as pressure from the off, but Smith responded in a confident stance when a reporter questioned his ability. “I understand people will have there reservations over my appointment when many more experienced coaches were available, but I was born in the Town, I’ve been a supporter of the Club for many years and I have no doubt in my own ability. Promotion this season is not an un reasonable request with the players and the facilities we have to hand and I relish the opportunity.

John Murtough, former Director of Football at Coventry City was later announced as Smith’s assistant and only time will tell if the newly appointed Management team at Chesterfield can produce a Promotion Campaign in there last year at Saltergate.
