I keep reading in these pages people moaning about apparent cheating re players availability to clubs / players stats - listen up, guys - Sports Interactive are'nt providing an absolute template that HAS to be acted upon as written in stone ( Why do they provide a DB Editor otherwise ? ).

Look, they're only human and can't possibly judge what or what is'nt a given player is capable of or how good he is week to week. In game terms, that's our job surely. I'll give you some examples:

My home town team is Liverpool; I've supported them all my life ( well, since I was 9 ), but I challenge ANY honest football fan to argue with the fact that, according to Spts Intrctve ( consistently ):

J. Carragher Potential: Sub 165 ( hardly realistic, surely ? )
Xabi Alonso: 160 -172 ( has anyone at SI seen this Basque play ? He & Xavi are Spain's - engine room & he cost Los Galacticos £30,000,000 ! )

I'm sure all of you has had their own particular annoyances re your own club's player's capabilities, as judged by SI, but in the final reckoning I believe it boils down to this: Football Manager is not about seeing who can pee the highest but how much ENJOYMENT you get from actually playing the game, nay ?

i will challenge both of them straight away. carragher isnt that good any more, hes coming to the end of his career. look at the players better than im FM: pepe, lucio, terry ,ferdinand, puyol, gallas, agger, chiellini, ramos, pique, mexes. youseriously saying any of these players are better

xabi is very good, but not amazing, hence hes at 172 , when you consider than pirlo and cambiasso are 174, de rossi and mascherano are 178, and essien is 182, thats spot on mate

si are far more objective than any of us would be

SI don't do the CA and PA on form in the last season, I think they do it over a level of performance through a few seasons, hence why Zamora wasn't upgraded as much as we thought he would be.

Although I wish the January CA and PA updates were done on form, would be better imo :(

Whilst I do admit Carra is coming to the end of a great career - according to SI, Jamie has never been any good since he made it into the first team ( trust me ). I think Xabi's value can be illustrated by Liverpool's poor showing this season - he was the only high profile player to leave in the summer & what a miss he's been !

Has anyone noticed the rather measley 'Stamina' stats on on a lot of players ? I've been playing teams and seen very often that they've been forced to put on 2 subs at half time because, no doubt, they're shagged out - hardly realistic. My point is that SI's take on player stats is only a guide line & not to be taken as gospel !

I agree with that.
There's a kind of controversy:
Check benat(betis)
Stephen brogan
Zieler(once tipped the new jens mustermans)
These players have very low PA like 120-125 but stats wise seem good players

And see
Obertan(huge PA 170 but does not really develop)
Macheda(for me his positioning is fantastic - always finds himself at the right place at the right time but in fm positioning 5)
Foster ( Makes costly mistakes... still high PA, good stats but inconsistant)

I think the SI researchers probably are a little subjective but I would say that the game is more about players being overrated. Also the game is based so heavily on attributes and so little on the things that effect football so much such as settling in, langauge barrier, blending in with the squad, moving abroad, going up divisions. I think SI need to rethink the way they judge players because otherwise there will be more players like Welliton and Veloso who are rated as the worlds best on FM.

Not sure whether that's on topic or not, just trying to say that SI do not have a lack of objectivity but they only have a short time to base players abilities on.

Carragher isn't really a good player, and I am a Liverpool fan so I have nothing against him. Alonso isn't better than Iniesta, he is very good, but not quite world class.

Tbh, our views are hugely biased so I don't think we should edit people. Fair playing level for everyone!

Yeah I usually observe players in game IRL and go back to FM and think hey this guy's stats should be better/worse than this. So yup, there is a slight lack of objectivity on their part although they do a great job.

Having played FIFA for a long time, I can tell you that SI had done a terrific job in rating the players.

I just think your being extremely biased tbh, Carragher is a very good player, but not World Class. Therefore his rating is pretty spot on, and Xabi Alonso is exactly the same.

We could all criticise the make up of players from our own teams and say they should be better, its what football is all about. Opinion!

Realistically Chucho Benitez should have a shooting of like 3 XD but they are kind to him :P

Credit is always given where credits due with Football Manager, the latest patch improved my team Birmingham City from our exploits this season which is fair. The ability of the players that we have combined was under rated therefore they changed it.

Carragher has been playing at the same level for years constantly. Not excelling or depleting. If anything he is getting on a bit now, doesn't have the same presence in my opinion.

It proves that the game is accurate, when real life football managers use it as a basic scouting tool to spot potential in players!!
