Hi guys
this is my faitfhul emulation of Claudio Ranieri's Roma 2024-25 tactic.

Let's see the tactic analysis

Tactical Analysis: Claudio Ranieri’s Roma

In November 2024, Claudio Ranieri was appointed as Roma’s head coach, replacing Ivan Juric. The team was unexpectedly caught in the relegation zone and seemed demotivated and disjointed. Since Ranieri’s arrival, Roma has experienced a remarkable turnaround: with a tally of 56 points in 26 matches (matched only by Napoli and Inter), the club came within touching distance of Champions League qualification. The transformation was not only psychological but, above all, tactical, thanks to a more solid organization both in managing match phases and in the selection of systems of play.

Formations and Tactical Attitude
Ranieri’s main structure is the 3-5-2, a setup he expertly adapts based on the game’s various stages:
• Starting formation: 3-5-2.
• Attacking phase: The system often morphs into a 3-3-1-3, with the playmaker (usually Paredes) dropping deep to start the play, while the mezzali (box-to-box midfielders) drift wider to enable runs from deep, supported by wing-backs pushing up the flanks.
• Alternative in possession: Sometimes a 3-2-4-1 shape emerges, with the wide players moving up in line with the attacking midfielders (Dybala and often Pellegrini), and the central midfielder dropping to help start the action from the back.
• Defensive phase: Roma reverts to a disciplined 5-3-2, dropping the wing-backs into the defensive line and arranging the midfield to provide layered coverage. Dybala operates closer to the striker, ready to become an outlet when possession is regained and a quick counterattack is needed.
Key Players
• Svilar: Right-footed goalkeeper, comfortable with the ball at his feet, adept at both short and long distribution.
• Mancini: Tenacious center-back, excels in physical duels and tight marking.
• Hummels: Experienced defender, versatile in building from deep and spotting passing lanes.
• Ndicka: Provides cover and speed as the left center-back.
• Saelemaekers: Right wing-back with an attacking mindset, adept at finding space between lines.
• El Shaarawy: Highly technical winger, fast and attack-minded, contributes less to defensive efforts.
• Angelino: Quick, dynamic and aggressive left wing-back, effective in both phases.
• Koné: Tireless and physical central midfielder, capable of progressive runs and quick transitions.
• Pisilli: Young, dynamic central midfielder, skilled at making late runs from midfield.
• Paredes: Deep-lying playmaker, technical and the main reference point in building play.
• Pellegrini: Often deployed as an advanced mezzala, with vision and long-range shooting ability.
• Baldanzi: Agile attacking midfielder, also useful in pressing.

• Dybala: Creative brain between the lines, crucial for crafting chances.
• Dovbyk: Physical and quick striker, adept at playing with his back to goal.
• Shomurodov: Powerful forward, strong in aerial duels.
Development of Play Phases
Possession Phase
• Build-up: Roma prefers to build from the back on the ground, leveraging the playmaking abilities of Paredes and Hummels. If Paredes is tightly marked, the team switches to a direct long ball toward Dovbyk, who acts as a target man. This approach, for example, led to goals scored in the derby against Lazio.
• Development: The midfield staggers with Paredes staying deep, Koné bursting into the attacking third, and Pellegrini pushing forward. The focus is on combinations between the lines and exploiting half-spaces, with quick passing sequences and width provided by the advanced wing-backs.
• Wide Play: The wing-backs, often positioned very high, stretch the field. Occasionally, the mezzali drift wide to support the play, creating numerical superiority on the flanks through interplay with the attacking midfielder.
• Link Play: Dybala roams freely between the lines, knitting play together and combining with both the striker and Pellegrini, who times his runs into dangerous positions.
• Chance Creation: Roma probes for depth both centrally, with quick one-twos and triangles, and by seeking 1v1 situations or long-shot opportunities for Dybala and Pellegrini.
Non-Possession Phase
• First Press: The team opts for a patient approach when the opposition holds the ball deep, remaining compact and covering space. Once the ball crosses midfield, Roma becomes more aggressive, capitalizing on the defenders’ physicality.
• Defensive Line: Man marking is applied, with central defenders ready to step out and intercept. When defending crosses, the backline sets up in a long diagonal, and midfielders drop back to plug gaps.
• Wide Defense: If play develops on the wings, the wing-backs push out aggressively; when full-backs from the opposing side attack, the mezzali join to press and support in those wide channels.
• Midfield Coverage: The midfield staggers, with Paredes providing cover and Koné/Pellegrini alternating presses depending on the side of the ball.
Transitions
• Offensive Transition: Upon regaining possession, Roma immediately seeks to attack in behind, looking for quick progressions to Dovbyk or, if the direct option isn't possible, retains possession and reconstructs from the back.
• Defensive Transition: When the ball is lost, the initial press is not all-out: the nearest player challenges, but the main priority is a quick regroup to block vertical attacks and limit the opposition’s space.
