Continental release clause

I was interesting in purchasing a player for Hibernian. I was in my 6th season, had won the league 5 times in a row and was qualified for the Champions League group stages. The player in question had a 11.25 million release clause to teams involved in a continental competition. However, when bidding for the player, when offering the full amount upfront, the release clause wasn't triggered. Does anyone know why this is? He played for Celtic and there was nothing in the clause mentioning he could only be sold to foreign teams when that clause was activated.
