Contracts renew

When is best to offer a contract renew? Players with one year left in contract will hardly accept a new one in 6 months...Im having a big trouble offering a new contract to one of my key players.
So, its best to try and offer new contract about 1 year and half before it expires?

If it's a squad player I usually wait until there's 6 months or less left, that way I can get them to agree to a lower deal.

If it's one of my key players I would offer it 2 years before their contract is set to expire, so if they're being lame and want too much money I have a year to sell them on before they lose all their value.
