Hello everyone,

I've been running into a strange issue since 14.3. When defending corners, the opposing team will have 4 players forming a wall at the edge of the 6 yard box. Like, they don't move, and my players can't get through, so the only player that's in the 6 yard box is the one marking the keeper.
View attachment 409526 Here's a screenshot that shows what I mean. The 4 'wallers' don't move until the ball is kicked, and sometimes not even then.

I've tried to set this up for my own defensive corners but the players just run around in a big blob until the ball is kicked, then they run towards the ball in a big blob and let in a goal.

Has anyone else noticed this difference in the AI defense of corners since 14.3?

Edit: Link to SI Forums thread on the subject.

Thanks to wkdsoul for the link to the work around.

I see a lot of views on the thread, but no comments. Has anyone noticed this? Is this just something everyone here knows how to do? Is it a weird bug with my game in particular?

Is there some thread I haven't been able to find which explains this?

There is a whole thread about this on the SI forums. This will be fixed in FM2015 as it's not something you can replicate. Only the ME can do it which caused quite a stir since now the ME can do something that players can't.

Thank you very much, Shyftyy. I tried looking, but I'm not as knowledgeable of where to look as I should be :)

Playing a game for 8 months with a known and troubling problem?

Ahh.

Fun.

It's actually a user interface problem. But yeah, it's the only thing the opposition can do which you can't.

I don't see why it's caused a stir though. Players have been exploting the match engine for years, and now the opposition can do 1 thing that the players can't, it's caused a stir. Rather hypocritical.

I've got 3 players on mark six yard bo. looks similar to that on corners.

Anyone got an issue with playeers constantly taking short ones, even though instructed otherwise?

Well, technically, any AI manager could be programmed to prefer set piece tactics which exploit the match engine. Of course, SI isn't going to spend the time implementing exploits of their match engine when they could just be fixing those exploits.

For players who don't use exploity tactics though, it's jarring to see the AI doing something that you actually cannot possibly do. While it's not a big problem, as there are ways to score against the type of zonal marking we're discussing, it is still something that the AI can do that we can't.

Currently, the UI only allows 1 player to mark the 6 yard box. Do you mean you have players doing "go back", because that tends to create a ball of jostling players and not a solid wall.

Considering it's the first time ever in the SI Football Manager series that the AI can do something in the ME which you can't, it may be a bit concerning. However, as I said, it's just a UI problem, so it's not like the coded it in so the AI could do something different.

I had the same problem. Check your set pieces settings. If you have a player offering to come short, that will overwrite your settings you place on your kicker / thrower. Remove the player setting to come short, then it should Work.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a thread about this on si games forum. The statement was that defence was given an option to zonal mark, and only AI can use it. It will be introduced to players in fm15.

How a member Sweety made it?

this was in response to someone asking a similar question about how i had two players set to offer short option.

"go to tactics and set pieces tab
at the top left above the players there is a drop down menu
set this to attacking corners
next to the player names it will appear a tick box with an instruction next to it
untick every box if any are ticked.

now tick the first player and give him the instruction offer short option
untick him

now tick the second player and give him the instruction offer short option

tick the first player again and both should have the offer short option enabled."

same concept mate, not entirely sure how good this can be, I set it up in current tests and conceded 5 goals from corners during my first 4 friendlies....

Does anyone use this to defend corners? I'm not unhappy defending corners with a more standard setup, but I have a tall team. If this is a good setup, I'll try it out.
