Coventry City FC appoint new manager

Coventry City FC have parted ways with Steven Pressley and have appointed an unknown American manager Jeremiah Walsh on a one year contract. Pressley had been in charge since March 2013 but following a disagreement with the board over wages, he was soon axed from the club.

This is Walshs' first venture into management having obtained his coaching badges a couple of years ago and holding a coaching role with the Wilmington Hammerhead in the USL Pro division, he looks set to take the club by storm. Coventry City sit at the bottom of League 1 with no games played, thanks to a 10 point deduction over the Ricoh Arena, and home games will be played at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium until the 1st of July, 2016.

"I'm very happy to be here at Coventry, it is a club with massive potential but these next few years will be tough as we have certain circumstances which are a burden at this time. I have a lot to prove to the board, whom I have to thank for giving me this opportunity, and to the fans themselves. I appreciate they were looking forward to a big-name manager taking charge of this club but I promise them I will do everything I can to bring Coventry back to where they belong."

The American - who has Welsh heritage from his father's side does have professional playing experience in England and in the United States. His career started at Middlesborough football club as a teenager where he played in the U21 side for 2 seasons before making his first team debut in 2003 in the EPL. During that season he was sold to Plymouth Argyle who we're playing in the Championship at that time and came into the starting 11 straight away. It was during his time at Plymouth that he blew his right knee out in the 2004/2005 season. He was sold during that summer after rehabbing the knee to the Columbus Crew but it was clear his knee was never the same. He retired in 2007 from football and got his coaching badges over the next 2 years. He joined the Wilmington Hammerheads staff in 2011 where he served as a coach on the staff until being appointed the new Sky Blues boss earlier today.

The squad as you might have expected isn't quite up to par, with half of the contracts expiring in the summer; my first priority is to renew the contracts of the players I think are worthy enough to play for this club. Here is the squad report:

Goalkeepers:

Joe Murphy (Vice Captain)

Lee Burge

Defenders:

Jordan Clarke

Cyrus Christie

Aaron Phillips

Jordan Willis

Blair Adams

Ryan Haynes

Danny Seaborne

Midfield:

Adam Barton

Conor Thomas

John Fleck

Franck Moussa

Billy Daniels

Dylan McGeouch

Carl Baker (Captain)

Denzel Slater

Forwards:

Callum Wilson

Nathan Delfouneso (on loan from Aston Villa)

Aims for this season ...

Everybody managing a club has some sort of seasonal aims to help them further progress, here are mine:

1) Do as much as I can to erase the clubs debts.

2) Look for a parent club.

3) Finish this season in the top 8.

4) Win the Johnstones Paint Trophy.

5) Keep the core of this team together through the tough times.

Pre-season Fixtures:

Match #1 at Sixfields Stadium against Burnley (0-1) Loss

Match #2 at St. James park against Exeter (0-2) Loss

Match #3 at Sixfields Stadium against Birmingham (3-0) Win

Match #4 against Concord Rangers (3-1) Win

Match #5 away against Nuneaton (3-1) Win (feeder club)

The pre-season won't be too much effort, although we should look to beat most of the teams there apart from Burnley of course. I might just arrange more friendlies to increase squad fitness and to bring some more cash into the club. I haven't made any signings yet, the first two/three matches will help me decide which areas of the squad definitely need improving.

Tactics:

4-3-1-2 Control tactic (possession based & home tactic)

4-1-3-2 Counter tactic (defending based & away tactic)

These are the tactics that I'll be working with this season, they may change depending on the match (mentality, etc) but tactical consistency is a key factor in success.

Coventry City FC announces link with Premier League giant ...

Coventry City manager Jeremiah Walsh had asked the board a fortnight ago to find the club a parent club to take on a couple of players on loan and to help with the finances of the club via an annual fee. Everton will pay Coventry City an annual fee of around 40,000 pounds.

This news will be of great happiness and joy for the supporters of the Sky Blues. The annual fee will certainly help as Coventry is still in a financial crisis at the moment. Jeremiah Walsh was asked what he thought about the partnership between the two clubs and what it means moving forward. He spoke to the BBC this morning at the Sky Blue Lodge training ground.

"Well I'm glad we have had the opportunity to partner up with Everton, they're a giant club and it will certainly help boost our reputation and finances in the short term. As the contract states, we can loan willing players that are under contract to Everton without having to worry about the players wages or a fee for the said service. Although I generally do not think that a team should be built around players who are on loan to the club, I do think that a player or two can most definitely help our depth issue here at the club. With that being said I'd like to thank the board for making this happen and will be most beneficial moving forward."

Another positive event happened earlier this week as Jordan Willis and Billy Daniels agreed to take a cut in wages and extend their contracts with the club. A big help in clearing out a little room to bring a player or two into the club moving forward.
