Hi guys
this time I emulated David Gray's Hibernian
David Gray's Hibernian in Football Manager 2024
Based on an analysis of David Gray's playing style with Hibernian – characterized by flexibility, possession control, adaptive pressing, and the ability to make real-time adjustments – here's how to translate these principles into an effective tactic in Football Manager 2024.
Base Formation: 3-5-2
Player Roles and Instructions
Goalkeeper: Jordan Smith
Goalkeeper (Defend): No specific instructions.
Central Defenders: Nectar Triantis, Rocky Bushiri, Jack Iredale
Right and Left Central Defenders: Ball Playing Defender (Defend): Stay Wider, Tackle Harder.
These two defenders initiate play with progressive passes and push up defensively to press and stop opponents before they get near the penalty area.
Central Defender: Central Defender (Cover): More Pressing, Take Fewer Risks, Tackle Harder.
This central defender stays deeper than his two teammates but still tries to stop opponents before they reach the box. When he has the ball, he avoids risky passes.
Wing-Backs: Chris Cadden and Nicky Cadden (or Jordan Obita)
Wing-Back (Support): Stay Wider, Tackle Harder, Cross From Deep.
They provide width and overlap, attempting crosses from deep.
Right Central Midfielder: Nectar Triantis or Joe Newell
Segundo volante (Support): Tackle Harder, Move Into Channels, Get Further Forward.
This is the more offensive of the two central midfielders but still contributes defensively, helping with cover.
Left Central Midfielder: Dylan Levitt
Defensive Midfielder (Defend): Take Fewer Risks, Tackle Harder.
He has purely defensive duties, helping the defenders cover spaces, including those left open by the overlapping wing-backs.
Attacking Midfielder: Junior Hoilett
Attacking Midfielder (Attack): Tackle Harder, Move Into Channels, Roam From Position.
Hoilett exploits the returning runs of the strikers and bursts into space. He tries to link up with other midfielders and drops deep to receive the ball, always seeking the best position from which to create play.
Right Striker: Elie Youan
Advanced Forward (Attack): Tackle Harder.
Youan is more of a finisher than his partner Kukharevych, but also has pressing duties, trying to stop opponents' build-up play from the back.
Left Striker: Mykola Kukharevych
Target Man (Support): Tackle Harder.
He drops deep to link play and his returning movements create space for teammates' runs.
Team Instructions
In Possession
Attacking Width: Narrow – allows players to stay close to each other, passing the ball among themselves, making it difficult for opponents to regain possession.
Passing Directness: Shorter Passes – to avoid risks and control possession, also allowing faster progression of the ball forward.
Tempo: Higher Tempo – to get the ball into the opponent's half more quickly.
Focus Play: Left Flank and Right Flank – with Overlap Left and Overlap Right to exploit the ability of the two wing-backs.
Pass Into Space – to find better-placed teammates, especially to exploit the spaces between the opponent's central defender and full-back.
Crossing Type: Low Crosses
Dribbling: Run at defense – to utilize one-on-one ability.
In Transition
When Possession Is Lost: Counter-Press – to regain possession as quickly as possible in the opponent's half.
When Possession Is Won: Counter – to quickly launch counter-attacks, creating confusion in the opponent's defense.
Goalkeeper Distribution: Distribute to Centre-Backs and Take Short Kicks – to start play from the back.
Out of Possession
Defensive Line: Much Higher Defensive Line and Higher Line of Engagement – to keep the team compact and reduce space between the lines.
In addition, the following instructions should be added:
Tackling: Get Stuck In
Pressing Intensity: Much More Intense Pressing
Prevent Short GK Distribution
Defensive Width: Stay Much Higher
Trap Outside
Results
Tested with Hibernian, starting the season in June 2024 with the player market locked until April 2025 to ensure the same squad available to David Gray in real life.
